I feel like I have asked this question to DVC themselves but I am not sure how this works...I am actually looking into buying a small amount of points through resale...Does it really matter what resort you buy into? If you can buy OKW at say $55 pp and it costs $89 for AKV would the points equal the same when booking a room? how does that work? If I have 30 points at OKW and it cost that for 1 night AKV would my OKW points pay for that? I hope someone can follow what I am trying to say because my mind is going crazy with this.

The real sticking point is that you are able to book at your home resort (the resort where you own points) at 11 months and at all others at 7 months out. So if you are interested in traveling during very popular times or need a specific but limited room type, then you will need that home booking advantage. However, if you aren't choosy about where you stay or you aren't able to plan your trips more than 7 months in advance, it doesn't matter where you own points.

There are a lot of good "sticky" threads with info about buying in on the DVC Operations board - I'd recommend thoroughly reading those and thinking carefully about your vacation habits.

Some OKW points expire before the other points. I think it is in 2042 but the owners were given the opportunity to extend their contract so you should make sure what year the contract expires.

In addition - you can book 11 months out at your home resort and only 7 months out at the other resorts. So if you REALLY HAVE to stay at a particular resort and travel during peak season - you should buy at that resort.

With that said - we own at Wilderness Lodge and hate it there. We live in Ohio and feel too close to home when we are there - we prefer the Boardwalk and Beach Club so we get the Beachy feel. In ten years - we have only stayed at WL once - it was our choice to stay there as it was our first stay there. We will never stay there again. So to us - it doesn't matter where we own but we also know to book at exactly 7 months, never travel during peak season and are willing to go with several differrent resorts.

Be sure to take the dues cost into account. You will pay dues for the life of the contract and they (usually) go up 3% per year. This can make a big difference of 30-50 years of the contract.

IMHO you need to spend a few hours/days reading here on the DIS. You have a lot to learn and making the wrong decision could cost you money and impact your future vacations.
