Confused on dress code...

Well I guess at the end of the day, it's really up to the individuals although Disney is trying to set a certain atmosphere for it's travelers. My issue is that with 4 kids and 6 of us to pack for, I would really love to leave my boys' dress shoes, ties and jackets at home (they go to schools where they have to dress like this every day. and frankly I'm sick of looking at these garments, we are ready to relax!) However, if it's going to make them uncomfortable being the only kids in chino's and polo shirts, or if it's going to offend the majority of people who are formally dressed then I would make the effort to bring them.

Disney does send mixed messages....

We just got off the Wonder and when we said something about dressing for dinner our server said "oh, we just want you to be comfortable. Wear what you want." Which, to me, is completely believable - Disney wants all their guests to be comfortable. Which means that they would like it if everyone dressed for dinner (because so many people do and it keeps the dining rooms classy looking and makes the people who REALLY dress up comfortable), but they aren't turning you away in shorts (unless you are dining in Palo) or would make you feel the least bit uncomfortable about wearing shorts in the dining room. We did dress every night for dinner - and most people did. Men wore khaki pants. Women wore slacks or capris or dresses or skirts. We saw some people really WELL dressed for dinner a few nights - women in sparkly dresses in particular. Fewer people "underdressed" than "overdressed."

I saw NOBODY at dinner in their swimsuit (though I did see a few people having lunch in Tritons in swimwear and coverup.).

Okay quick question...I know it says no shorts but on Tropical night could my boys 9 and 7 wear nice shorts with their tropical shirts or is that frowned upon? We are looking forward to dressing up and are bringing lots of clothes for the six of us so we can but maybe for tropical night people wear shorts?

We were on the Magic in Jan. of 2003. We had late seating and on formal night I would say that the vast majority of people were very well dressed. So much so that I felt underdressed in a belted dress and for our upcoming cruise, I bought a long formal dress for the formal night and another fancy (but not long) dress for the semi-formal night. My DS's both wear dockers with button down or polo shirts and no ties and I feel very comfortable with them dressed that way.
