Confused about Y.E.S. Program - please help if you know the answer :-)

I have seen many posts on the disboards where people have set up their own Y.E.S. groups, coordinating with strangers (IRL strangers, anyway) to get to the required number to qualify as a YES group and do the program.

I have been planning with some fellow parents from my child's school to take a YES trip next year, and I just called to start the process of gathering information (pricing, etc) and discovered that the program has to be "approved" by the school in order for your group to qualify.

I don't think that my child's school will be in any position to approve such a trip. They would absolutely not want to take on any liability, and further, as a public school would feel that it sends the wrong message for them to approve an expensive trip that so many of the kids would not be in a position to afford to go on.

I am confused by the suggestion I got from the CM that without school approval, we can't plan this trip, because I can't imagine that the ad hoc groups organized here on the disboards had the approval of any school.

Can someone help me out, and let me know what I am missing?

If it is relevant, we would be a group with at least 15 children in the same grade all traveling with the specific intent of taking 2 YES classes specifically tied to the curriculum they are studying in school.

How did the other groups do it?

Thanks for your help!

When I checked into it, it had to be an organized group not just a bunch of parents taking their children. As you mention, it is supposed to be sponsored by an organization and like you said, the school probably won't want it as a sponsored trip as they won't want to assume the liability. Most people who participate go during open enrollment, or as part of a legitimate group such as girl scouts.

Hope that helps.

You will need to sign up through individual enrollment not as group.

Individual enrollment classes are only held certain times of the year and fill up quickly.

There were groups that were formed in the past but they have since put an end to that. You will have go through the individual enrollment now.
