Confused about what to buy

I'm very new to looking into purchasing DVC and feeling confused. Apparently all you can buy as your home resort is the poly or Aulani. Ideally I think I would love to buy into Wilderness Lodge if the rumors are true and they open that back up. But my question is more of math. Say I buy 100 points but my trip is like 127. What do I do for those 27 points without borrowing from my next year?

I see lots of rental stuff on here, would it be just a matter of renting 27 points and those would then be available for me to use to make my reservation? I assume there's some sort of system that tracks how many points I have and id assume I cannot make a reservation without the entire 127 points in my account.

I hope I'm making a little sense and someone can answer my question

Take the time to read through this section, you will find answers to all of your questions which are asked a few time each week. Disney wants to sell only the new resorts where they make the most money but all resorts are available via the resale market and a substantial discount.

You can either borrow from the next year or purchase "one time use points" from Disney. You can buy I think 24 per use year, however it is only at the 7 month mark that you can purchase the extra points. You can borrow from the next year in your 11 month window. Look into the resale market. The WLV group is a great bunch of people or the new WLV will be out likely next year sometime if you want to buy direct or need an end date that is further out. This board is an excellent place to start!

If you're primarily going to use your point for wilderness or one of the other dvc locations, I strongly recommend that you but resale.

The VWL resale contracts have a 2042 end date, with maintenance fees appx $6/pt. However, you can book at VWL at 11mo, securing your home resort-- and you can trade out at 7mo to a different location.

If you buy resale, you save $70pt (almost 40% savings), but your contract will end in 2042 vs 2064.

In addition, resale points cannot be used for cruises, adventures by Disney or the concierge hotel locations. Most ppl think it is not really worth using your points for these options anyway, so the restrictions do not bother them.

We bought resale for our home resorts (BLT and bwv) and rarely stay at a non home resort. We stayed at poly a few months ago and I love it there, but will not buy at the current prices. If we were ever to do a cruise, we would rent out points and pay cash.

I personally know 5 other families (sister, brother, in laws and 2 friends), 4 of whom bought direct from Disney. One bought resale. They only use their points for the dvc properties at Disney. The ones who bought direct bought the new properties at the time (BLT, BCV, GFV) and only the person who bought BCV stay primarily at their home resort. Believe it or not, the BLT and GFV owners stay mostly at BWV (so they easily could have bought resale and saved $$).

Good luck!

I'd suggest you read some of the threads here:

It's also important to note that they aren't going to "open VWL back up." The points that will be sold there will be for new units being built, including some sure to be exorbitant cabins on the shore. These points liking won't be 11-month points for the existing VWL, which is sold out.

While, in theory, they could merge the associations, there are a bevy of reasons they won't, all of which involve significant money.

I pretty much always use my VGF points for stays at VGF. If I get addonitis again (which is highly likely ) I'll most probably buy at a different home resort, and maybe a different use year...

That way all our vacation needs will be covered (I hope...)

Based on what you say, you have 2 options:

1. Buy a contract at the Villas at Wilderness Lodge (and everyone on here will strongly encourage you to do so on the resale market. You will pay about 90$ per point, as opposed to the 160 from Disney). Either way, your contract will expire in 2042.
2. Wait for a year or two and but the new wilderness lodge offering directly from Disney.
a. This is likely to be about 180$ (give or take) per point when it goes on sale.
b. The general consensus is that the rooms will be more 'point expensive' in the new addition (I would look at home many points it is at the current VWL, and look at the same at the Grand Floridian - and figure in the middle....at least.
c. Your contract will be good for 50 years, 2067 or 2068 or so.

If you feel you need 127 points, I would buy 140-150. And I would do so on the resale market. there you have to take what you can get, which means probably 150. Buying direct you can specifically state 140.

DO NOT BUY 100!!!!!
If you make up the additional needed by use of the rental marketplaces, you will pay 16$ per point. In 6 years, that is 96$...more than you would have paid to bought the points outright today.

You can buy 24 one time UY points per year. But this can only be done at the 7 month mark. The reason to buy VWL is to benefit from the 11 month booking window. If you have to buy 1 time UY points, and hold off until the 7 month mark to make the reservation, you negate that advantage. In this case, you would be better off buying Saratoga Springs points, and using those to book at 7 months(at Wilderness, if available) they are cheaper than WL on the resale market, and have lower maintenance fees.

You could also buy 100 resale, and add on 50 in a year or two.

All in all, if you are perpetually needing points, it is best/easiest to borrow. Then realize you need more points like the rest of us, and feed add-on-itis.

As an aside, realize that Disney can change how many points a room costs per night at any time. So if you need 127 for a week, they could change it. They could add a point per night, or subtract one. I doubt VWL will get a reallocation, but it is possible. Also realize that Disney can not change the total number of points constituting the resort - meaning that to raise a studio one point per night, they have to lower a another accommodation to get those points...they cant just go adding at will.

It seems as though you were looking to buy Direct. 100 points direct would be 16K (or is it 16.5???)...either way, you can get 150 points resale for less than that, and you do not have to worry about your 27 point deficit.
