We are looking into possibly needing a point transfer from another DVC member to add to our upcoming September vacation. When I asked DVC about the rules to the point transfer, it confused me because she stated that it had to be the current years points and it retained the use year of the original owner. OK, that I understood.

But then she said that since my use year is December, that I was currently in my 2010 points (which has already been used for said vacation), and that I would have needed someone who had September 2010 through December 2010 points to be able to do my vacation. If the points retain the activity of its original owner, why wouldn't I be able to use someone's March or April 2011 points (if those are legit use years, I don't remember all the months that are valid)? I asked her about that and she told me no, that since I was in my 2010 use year, that the points I got would have to be 2010 points.

Thanks for any clarification!

You can receive a transfer from someone else's 2011 use year. I have a June use year and recently had someone transfer me their February 2011 points. That CM was wrong. CMs don't always know what they are talking about.

If I am understanding the OPs post then I think the CM was correct. You could have 2011 points transferred to you but they could not be borrowed for a trip in 2010 use year because transferred points cannot be borrowed (transferred points can be banked just not borrowed).

If the OP has points transferred in that are Feb 2011 - Sep 2011 use year, they will not need to borrow points for a September 2011 trip.

You are right. I should know better than to answer a use year question at 2:00 AM when I can't sleep. Good night.

Many CMs are confused by the rules (which are not well written). As long as the points are valid to be transfered by the person you are getting them from thay are valid to be transfered (if you have not done another transfer during this use year.

As long as they work for you vacation without borrowing you are OK.

Call again and ask for a supervisor (although some of them do not even understand the rules fully)

What may have confused the CM is that you are allowed to get a transfer for your current UY and your next UY. Maybe she was only thinking about the current UY.

So, you are allowed to receive both 2010 and 2011 UY points right now. If you get 2011 UY points, then that will be your 2011 UY transfer.

As stated, call back--any points that are valid for your time of travel can be used.

Thank you thank you guys!!! I really appreciate it! Yes, what you guys are explaining is how I had interpreted it, so when the CM was stating otherwise, it didn't make any sense to me. So another question...if I need a point transfer for the vacation which is this September 2011, does it have to be someone's points who were already distributed? Meaning that if someone's UY was June 2011, they cannot transfer me those points, it would have to be someone whose points are available now?

Just buy a add-on contract. :thumbsup2

LMAO Don't tempt me!!! I have already been tempted to do this a million times, but it is just not the best financial move for us hahaha!! I would own 1 million points if we could! :rotfl2:

You should be able to have points from any 2010 Use Year transferred into your 2010 Use Year and any could be used for a Sept 2011 trip. At this time the only account with "current" 2010 points would be those with June, August, September, October or December Use Years since February, March and April are now in their 2011 Use Year and won't have any current points to transfer into your 2010 Use Year. Thos with Feb/Mar/April use Years could transfer into your 2011 Use Year though.

Doc, your explanation actually is similar then to what the CM said...so even though someone had March 2011 points that normally could be used by the owner to book that September 2011 trip, if I transferred those into my account I could not use them for that trip because my current UY is 2010? That is what I am not understanding...if they retain the activity of their origin, then it doesn't make sense to me why my UY would affect those points. I thought it would be as if I had those points with a March UY...still confused then! LOL sorry for all the questions....

I recently received a transfer of 230 points from another member's 2011 June UY without an issue. In July, I will receive another transfer of the same member's 2012 June UY points. I'll be banking the transferred 2011 points and using all of them to book a vacation for June 2012. I had to call twice to get a CM that understood what I was doing, but once I did, everything went smoothly.

The first CM said that I cannot receive someone else's 2012 points until their UY starts. I explained that we would be travelling in June of 2012 so I couldn't very well wait until June 1, 2012 to make my reservation. That made sense to her, but she couldn't get over thinking that in 2011, the 2012 points would be borrowed. I told her over and over that they are not borrowed until they are used for a reservation in a different UY. She understood what I was saying, but couldn't figure out how to do it so I ended up calling back the next day.

The way it has been explained to me, transfers are Use year specific - 2010 into 2010, 2011 into 2011 - so even though you are still in your 2010 Use Year you cannot receive any 2011 points from another member into that Use Year. However, you should be able to accept a transfer of 2010 points from another member with June, August or September and be able to use those for a trip in September, 2011 afetr banking them into 2011. (October and December could not be used in Sept since you can't borrow transferred points.)

By the same token, you should be able to accept February, March, April, June or August, 2011 points into your 2011 Use Year and use them for a September trip since they would be current for dates in September without borrowing.

Good luck! :)

I've been talking to Member Services about point transfers repeatedly for the last week. Here is how I personally absorbed the information as it relates to you:

1. 2010 goes to 2010. 2011 goes to 2011

2. Use years Sept, Oct and December are still bankable. June and August are not.

3. Use years Feb March April have no more 2010 points - they have either been used, banked, transferred or expired.

4. Use years September Through December can transfer you usable 2010 points if they have any available, which you could use for your September vacation.

5. Points keep the resort and use year of the person who transfers them to you. Spposedly.

6. Banked points cannot be transferred.

7. Transferred points can be banked (if you are in your banking window - 4 month rule).

8. One transfer per use year.

The information is confusing because it is like a math equation - different answer depending on when you want to go.

If the OP has points transferred in that are Feb 2011 - Sep 2011 use year, they will not need to borrow points for a September 2011 trip.

No. This is incorrect as far as I understand.

The 2011 points would go to Alicat's 2011 use year which is starting Dec 1,2011 and could not be borrowed BACK to his 2010 use year, which ends Nov 30, 2011.

JekJones statement was correct even in the wee hours of the night....

That is 2011 to 2011. Not the OP's situation.....

you can transfer in 2009, 2010 or 2011 by using your 2010 1 transfer allocation (depending on when you do it and what the transferer has eligable).

You can use another member 2011 points that you have transfered in during your 2010 use year as long as they are in their currnet use year for the reservation date (not the date you make the reservation.

They behave exactly the same as they would have in the origonal owners account except that they can not be borrowed

I understand what your saying, but it doesn't then make sense in terms of points retaining their own UY.

For example, if the OP gets Feb 2011 UY points into her account, that would count as her 2011 UY transfer. Are you are saying because she doesn't actually start her 2011 UY until Dec, she can't really use those Feb UY points (which would be valid from Feb 1st, 2011 - January 31st, 2012) until Dec 1st, 2011.

That would mean those points would be following her UY, and not their own if they are not of any use during the first 10 months.

My understanding has always been that you could get a transfer for your current UY and the next one. So, I am in my June 2010 UY and can take 2010 UY points and 2011 UY points right now. As soon as I start my 2011 UY, I can get 2011 UY points and 2012 UY points.

Regardless, once I get the points, they have to be used for the time frame of their own UY. So, if I got Feb 2011 UY points now, I thought I could use them to book travel from Feb 1st through Jan 31st, 2012.

Are you saying that I would really only be able to use them from June 1st - January 31st, 2012. Thanks!

That would mean those points would be following her UY, and not their own if they are not of any use during the first 10 months.

This was exactly my question! I didn't understand how, since my UY starts in December, that even if I got someone's Feb 2011 points, I would not be able to use them until December 2011 which is when I would get my points. Then it wouldn't follow along with the fact that they retained the UY of their origin (which is what I had always believed).

Is everyone else still as confused as I am? I really thought I had it down until I spoke with the CM, and now it seems like we all heard a different thing...

See, in this situation, it would mean that since I have a December 2011 UY, if I got someone's Feb 2011 points then I would only be able to use them from December 2011-January 31, 2012....that doesn't sound right to me.

According to the Vacation Planner 2011-2012 regarding transferring points:

*Members can transfer Home Resort Vacation Points to another Member who does not have the same Home Resort Vacation Points. The Vacation Points retain the Use Year and the Home Resort Priority of the contract from which they were transferred.

*If you have remaining transferred Vacation Points at the end of the transferring Member's Use Year, they expire.

*Transferred Vacation Points can be banked according to the banking window of the contract from which they were transferred.

So looking at these guidelines, it looks like they would behave as they originally would, but that was unlike what the CM had explained. I will try calling again to see if someone else gives me a different answer. Last thing I want to do is get a point transfer and then not be able to use them for what I had intended them for!
