Someone recently asked me a question that I couldn't answer. I told them that I bet somebody on the Dis could though, and they asked me to post it.

How do you do a confidential background check on someone (everything including military records)? :confused3

Thanks!

there are web based companies that will do a search of all public records for a fee.

i know i played around with the free portion of one advertised on the "classmates" website and was amazed at how (for free) someone could get my street name, unlisted phone number and the first names of a couple of my siblings

i don't know how much of military records are available for public record-when i went to work for a government agency we had to sign a specific release for background info. from prior private employers for some items not deemed "within the public record" (like personnel information-which most employers would'nt even give with the signed release), and i know from when i worked IN government that even with a signed release hr would'nt give out anything beyond confirmation of your final wage/job title-classification/and if you were eligble for "rehire". we were also prohibited from writing any type of letter of reccommendation (employees could use their copies of performance evaluations only).

i think if i were trying to find out something in particular about someone i would first look to see if that information is even available through public records-it could save paying money to someone who is not going to be able to get it.

This person has been dating someone who seems very nice, but the last month or so some possible red flags have come up (which may be an absolute coincidence).

Since they don't have any mutual friends and the other person is from somewhere else, it would be fairly easy for them to not be entirely truthful (if you know what I mean).

My friend would like to know a little bit more just to be on the safe side. I've never been in this situation and didn't have much advice to give. I saw some of the internet sites but wondered how accurate they were.

Thanks!

Some things you can see for free. Things like property (who owns it and how much it is worth), divorce decrees, convicted sex offenders, etc. I know that because someone I know was dating a complete SLIME and I was looking for facts to back up my assertion that he was, indeed, a slimy con man. ;)

The more you want to know, the more info you will have to possess. If you have lots of identifying info (date of birth, DL#, SS#, so on) you will be able to find out a lot more than if you just have a name.

I know court records are public. I can go to the court records for the state of MO and check and see what my idiot brother has been up to. Do a search for court records for the state this person is from.

Probably name and DOB (along with states of residence - two that they know of) would be all they would have.
