Confessions of a reluctant runner, a DL 1/2 & PHM PTR. 7/5 race recaps and final thoughts

In 30 days, I will be getting on a plane!

In 32 days, I will run through a castle!

32 days. Talk about seeming real!

Let's see how this last week of training went.

Last week, I was here:

  • JG Finish Upright. Total time: 11.5 hours + long run miles 69 (+ 6 magic miles)
  • JG Time Improvement. Total time: 17.25 hours + long run miles: 72
  • My plan. 14.81 hours + long run miles: 88.45
  • Total actual time to date: 14.11 hours + long run miles: 87.12
One week later I am here
  • JG Finish Upright. Total time: 12.5 hours + long run miles 73 (+ 6 magic miles)
  • JG Time Improvement. Total time: 18.75 hours + long run miles: 86.88
  • My plan. 16.23 hours + long run miles: 94.45
  • Total actual time to date: 14.82 hours + long run miles: 87.12
Yeah....if you do the math it is pretty obvious I did not run much last week!

Monday we went for a 4 mile walk. I actually had to wear my keen flip flops to not irritate my feet after the 12 mile run the day before. And one of my feet “tore” while we were out. Ow.

Tuesday we went for a 3 mile walk. Same thing on the Keen flip flops.

Wednesday we went to the gym as it was POURING. Got my tennis shoes on but the feet were less than thrilled about it.

Thursday we ran. Best training run I've had in a LONG time. 4.7 miles at a 9:06 pace. It was cooler, just under 60 degrees, though quite humid (97%). Felt great the entire run, just easy and strong. I tried something new to try and help protect my feet which were still recovering from the 12 mile run the previous Sunday. I have had these lying around for years, tried them at some point for something as the package was open but have not used them in, I have no idea when!
I’ll show you the less scary foot (actually it doesn't look that bad but it was ridiculously tender, this is the one that tore.

That one survived the run pretty well (Melvin thought so too)

The other one, Melvin liked even better!

Squish!

Even with the squish (which covers up the ugly part) it protected the foot quite well.

But you know, I think they may well be a viable option for me. I have 2 left. Trying to decide if I just wear them on every run, or save for the long one.

Friday, I did nothing. Normally this would be a run day but I don’t like to run 2 days in a row and with the swap due to rain = running on Thursday, I left it alone.

Saturday, I did nothing. Normally this would be a gym day, and was for Jeff. However I was busy wedding dress shopping with my sister during gym time. We had talked about possibly doing an 8K race that night but something far more important was on Jeff’s agenda, an airshow! Including White Knight and a Sherman tank, firing! Lots of very rare planes in the air.

We followed that up by going to see Planes, Fire and Rescue.

Which we LOVED! Jeff and I liked it better than the first one, the boys haven't decided. We plan to watch the first one again soon while it is fresh for a comparison. LOL.

Sunday we went for a hike. This was scheduled to be a run day. The plans called for 4 miles or 15 miles. My plan was for 6. The hike was supposed to be an 8 mile hike and I was not sure if I should go run afterwards to make up the miles, run the next day instead to make up the miles or just call it good between the walks and the hike.

It was a gorgeous day for a little hike!

I seriously wonder if Eric will ever outgrow the horrible picture stage.

Unfortunately the nice man who took the picture of all of us...had his finger in the top of all the shots so not much lake and no mountains in this one!

The hike ended up being only 6.5 miles total. But given that it was 80+ degrees out, when we got back, we elected to head here instead and jump in.

Which felt amazing!

And I elected not to run. Not ideal but I was not exactly on the couch all week either. My feet took a small beating on the hike but not horrible.
In other news I am rethinking my outfit for the race. I wore this on the 12 mile run.

Front

Back

And the pants in action at a previous race

Here is the thing.

I was SO comfortable for all 12 of those miles. Did not think about a thing. Although I did not have fuel with me, I could have easily carried it. Between the top and the bottom there are a ton of pockets. In the yellow skirt I only have one pocket total and it will be full with my phone an room key, not really room for anything else. This is only the 2nd time I have worn that top. The first one, I felt it didn’t breathe well. However it was a bit cooler out for that 12 mile run, low 60’s but with 80% humidity. This time, no issues, at all. It is also incredibly easy to carry my phone in this outfit as there is a side pocket in the knickers. If I want to take pictures at the DL half, getting my phone out to do so will be about a bazillion times easier than in the skirt.

The skirt works. It is super cute. The leg grippers kind of bug me, just a little. The pocket situation concerns me. The yellow tank, it works too. Does not breathe quite as well as some others I have but is not horrible. I wore it Sunday on the hike to test it, it was ok. Ideally I will wear one outfit for the long run this Sunday and one for the long one in 2 weeks so I have a good comparison. However, I want to try carrying some fuel so have to figure out how to do that in the skirt. It is supposed to be warm on Sunday, I am scheduled to run 13 miles so will likely try the green outfit out first. It does mean, a non themed outfit. Of course it also means if I want, the yellow could be used at Princess.

Then again, themed our matching outfits of some sort may well be in order for Princess!

On the subject of fuel though, I picked some up for the long run on Sunday.

I have used the margarita shot blocks before and like them. Kind of like a giant gummy candy. In the warmer weather I do think it’s smart for me to have one or two.

Here are the recommendations

Generally, performance athletes need to consume 200-400 calories per hour from all sources, such as gels, chews, bars and drinks. Half a packet of CLIF SHOT BLOKS can be eaten 15 minutes prior to activity to increase blood sugar levels, followed by 1-2 packets per hour during activity. For flavors with added caffeine, we recommend half a packet 15 minutes before activity, and one packet during activity.

Honestly, I cannot imagine eating that much before, or during a run! The most I have ever had on a run is 2 I think, and usually only 1. 1 block. Not 1 packet (packets have 6).

I have never tried them before running and frankly, a margarita block does not sound like the best thing before a race (though it's amazingly good during, electrolyte and salt/citrus heaven for me). Typically I have coffee first. However, that’s caused issues in 2 races and because of that I bought the energy gels to try (the double espresso and mocha) for before the run as a possible alternative. I had thought there was an espresso flavor in a block but it is just in the gels. I have never tried a gel before so that should be interesting, I plan to have one on Sunday before my run.

I also picked up some waffles. These are YUMMY! I have tried the vanilla one, gingersnap will be new. But uber messy. I have tried them on a run and while delicious (like a breakfast cookie) it was too messy, fingers too sticky and they made me quite thirsty. I do think it might be a good breakfast option for me before a run so got a couple to try. Likely I will only have half a waffle with my energy gel to test out.

I've also done some interesting reading on water. Very interesting article (in Runners World I think) on planned dehydration. It is an article about teaching yourself, a week or so before a race, how to run without taking water in during a race, or less water. I found it interesting as I generally don't take water in. I have been doing it recently as it is kind of beat into your head that you should. But I wonder. It was not an issue when I was not doing it. In the heat, yes it can make sense and in a race, I think it can as well. But I wonder. If I have to stop on a training run for water, I have to really stop, possibly wait in line and drink from a fountain. Not only does that take time but I take in too much water and the whole thing slows me down. Not necessarily in a bad way but it does slow me down. I refuse to carry water (or anything) but I may relook at this on Sunday’s long run and shoot for only one stop, or none, instead of maybe 2. I never get water during anything 9 miles or less anyway so really stopping twice seems overkill.

Last but most certainly not least we did find out our Corral Assignments!
I was way off. Ann was far more correct. Neither of us had it just right in our guessing, at least in how the redistributed it. They SLASHED the sizes of the first 6 corrals by more than half. The last 4 are quite large. It breaks down like this.

Corral/Total/>Time Required
Elite 28
A 898 >1:50
B 899 >1:55
C 898 >2:00
D 898 >2:05
E 998 >2:10
F 998 >2:15
G 2898 >2:30
H 3548 >3:13
I 2898 >3:25
J 3695

We are in C! I am VERY VERY VERY happy about this. I do not expect to finish under 2 hours. However, I do know I am capable of it if all the stars align and conditions are just right. It is the right corral. Even better is the fact that there are only 1800 people in front of us and only about 900 in our corral. For me, this should not feel much different than the 2 large races I have done, except it is better segregated and in theory my whole group is starting out running the same pace versus a huge spread.

I will say though, the whole process is interesting. It appears that RD went with peoples estimated finish times, versus necessarily what their proof of time submission translated to. I read that they only validated for people under 2:30 and I suspect, they didn't validate all, but just ones if the proof of time seemed very off from the estimated finish time. I know for me, I made sure mine matched so it didn't matter either way. But, if I did not have that one race, all my other races would have put me in D. If I was honest about the estimated finish time based on the proof of time submission. All those races would estimate me out at 2:03-2:06. D would have been fine as well and may well be where I "belong" but at least in C I don't feel totally outclassed and out of place. It is on the edge, but a comfortable one I think and hopefully, helps me keep closer to that pace.

That said, I think Corral H is a train wreck. That is something like an 11:30-14:30 mm pace group! Which is a crazy spread, far too big, that one is going to have an ugly first few miles.

Oh my goodness, your race is creeping right up. And hooray for Corral C!! I'm glad you're happy with your placement.

Based on my last 5k, I would be in that train wreck........which does not look fun at all :lmao:

I find all the different kinds of runner fuel fascinating (though I haven't tried any since I've never needed it), I can't wait to hear what you think of the gels.

Awesome that the little squishies helped your feet!

Melvin - AWWWWWW - so cute! His fur looks so soft on the feet.

Poor feet. Ugh - what a mess. Believe it or not my feet are great these days. I do occasionally get a pain on the top of my left foot, but remember the days of my plantar fasciitis? OMG. Those days are so gone!

I went to a sporting goods store today that had the most impressive array of hiking boots and I thought of the fabulous hikes you take. Just lovely.

Yay for your Coral placement. Glad you are pleased. Sounds like your running times are doing well and your mileage is pretty much on track. Now if you could just get those feet to cooperate.

I had a nice 6 mile run this morning which is the most I have run on any given in day in I can't tell you how long. This weekend we are going to the beach so I will just try to do 3 or 4 mile runs because I don't want to be MIA that long. It just seems rude, but I really want to concentrate on this 10K distance for awhile on my long run. Then I can bump it up.

Great update. Sorry about the feet but it looks like you have a good solution. :thumbsup2

I did the shot blocks and the jelly belly sports beans, which I just chucked a whole bunch I never used and were all gooey ( and expired) :rolleyes1

I had to be really careful of the ingredients int he shot blocks but eventually found a couple I could eat.

Hooray for Corral C !!!!
Yup I would be I the train wreck too - I blame short legs :)

Any way you look at it the first little bit is jockeying for position, then the only congestion I ran into ( HA) was around the water stops and places it got narrow.

AT WDW the parking payment booths were interesting- there are speed bumps there.
then the tunnel under the water is narrow - with obstacles ( curbs etc) and it gets narrow and steep.

Then the exit ramp back up to EPCOT and the approach is brutal. Hilly. I though the exit ramp was it and then I see up and down and up and down. I may have cried a little. But once you get back in the park you are almost done so adrenaline kicks in and it gets narrow again.

Well, Melvin is just adorable!!

You sure have some gorgeous scenery!! I can see why you guys like to hike! Around here, not so pretty.

Looks like you are doing a great job........well except for the feet! :scared1: Some great pictures from the hike. What beautiful scenery.

I am. I am glad I had that POT to get me into it but I'd have been ok in D as well. A freaked me out, this is such a better breakdown!

Based on my last 5k, I would be in that train wreck........which does not look fun at all :lmao:

I have no doubt with training those times will improve for you but boy, that corral is a mess, should be at least 2!

I find all the different kinds of runner fuel fascinating (though I haven't tried any since I've never needed it), I can't wait to hear what you think of the gels.

I haven't really needed it either and if the race were in cooler weather, I might not even play around with it. But now is the time to test. Should be interesting! I ran Weds about 1.5 hours after eating a yogurt and that was not great so I do worry about stuff before the race. Hopefully this is minimal enough to be a help, not a hindrance.

Awesome that the little squishies helped your feet!

They did! And...should have worn them again Wednesday night.

Melvin - AWWWWWW - so cute! His fur looks so soft on the feet.

He's a big fat softie that is for sure!

Poor feet. Ugh - what a mess. Believe it or not my feet are great these days. I do occasionally get a pain on the top of my left foot, but remember the days of my plantar fasciitis? OMG. Those days are so gone!

I remember them well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What made the difference? that is amazing and SOOOO cool for you.

I went to a sporting goods store today that had the most impressive array of hiking boots and I thought of the fabulous hikes you take. Just lovely.

I don't even own boots. LOL! USed to, but they were too big and not quite right. Had hiking tennis shoes but they weren't all that good and wore them to death. These days we just wear our Keens! Eric was breaking in some boots/shoes on that little hike though, he is going on a 50 mile hike starting Sunday with his scout troop. YIKES!

Yay for your Coral placement. Glad you are pleased. Sounds like your running times are doing well and your mileage is pretty much on track. Now if you could just get those feet to cooperate.

Yeah, the feet are impacting things for sure. Frustrating but I'll just keep plodding along! I am happy with the placement.

I had a nice 6 mile run this morning which is the most I have run on any given in day in I can't tell you how long. This weekend we are going to the beach so I will just try to do 3 or 4 mile runs because I don't want to be MIA that long. No need for you to be running farther than that, or even that far, quite yet unless you want to and have the time. 3-4 is perfect. Generally speaking 6 miles is always my long run as the default. 4-5 2x a week and then 5-6 on sunday. That's a basic normal, non training week. It's not a ton of miles for sure.

Great update. Sorry about the feet but it looks like you have a good solution. :thumbsup2

I guess, I'd like to find a solution that didn't' involve buying those pads on a continued basis but for now it seems it may work. Didn't use them weds (should have) but will tonight and for the 13 on Sunday so we will see.

I did the shot blocks and the jelly belly sports beans, which I just chucked a whole bunch I never used and were all gooey ( and expired) :rolleyes1

I had to be really careful of the ingredients int he shot blocks but eventually found a couple I could eat.

LOL! One pack of the margarita blocks literally lasted me 6 months. Maybe longer!

They expire? I figured they had a half life of a zillion years. LOL. UGH on the ingredients, how frustrating.

Hooray for Corral C !!!!
Yup I would be I the train wreck too - I blame short legs :)

I hope they fix that somehow, that is way way too big of a time spread there.

Any way you look at it the first little bit is jockeying for position, then the only congestion I ran into ( HA) was around the water stops and places it got narrow.

yes, whether it is a race of 300 or 3000 or more, there will always be that.

AT WDW the parking payment booths were interesting- there are speed bumps there.
then the tunnel under the water is narrow - with obstacles ( curbs etc) and it gets narrow and steep.

Bumps are weird, Ann and i had issues at a race with the ones in the middle of the road. I was worried about tripping!

Then the exit ramp back up to EPCOT and the approach is brutal. Hilly. I though the exit ramp was it and then I see up and down and up and down. I may have cried a little. But once you get back in the park you are almost done so adrenaline kicks in and it gets narrow again.

Ugh on the ramp, I have heard about that.

Well, Melvin is just adorable!!

He is a cutie

You sure have some gorgeous scenery!! I can see why you guys like to hike! Around here, not so pretty.

Very blessed with the scenery, I really can't imagine living elsewhere. especially since I've done it! I missed the mountains SO much when I was in Chicago.

C is an excellent letter in my opinion.

yes it is!

Looks like you are doing a great job........well except for the feet! :scared1: Some great pictures from the hike. What beautiful scenery.

Yeah, darn feet. Super annoying. It was a very pretty hike, we really liked it. Nice little outing.

Your foot issues sound painful. Good that you are able to work through them.

It's almost here! Keep up the great work!

Melvin is very cute!

The feet are annoying as much as anything. It's getting close, a bit freaky.

Melvin is a cutie, he drives Jeff nuts. He is Evan's cat, Jeff has a soft spot for my cat and thinks Melvin is evil.

Which of course he isn't, he's just younger than Hank (my cat) but it's pretty funny how Jeff will go out of his way to take care of Hank...and complain about Melvin.

In 24 days, I will be getting on a plane!

In 26 days, I will run through a castle!

GAH! That’s less than 4 weeks!

Let's see how this last week of training went.

Last week, I was here:

  • JG Finish Upright.
One week later I am here

  • JG Finish Upright. Total time: 13.5 hours + long run miles 85.5 (+ 6 magic miles)
  • JG Time Improvement. Total time: 20.25 hours + long run miles: 93.84
  • My plan. 17.65 hours + long run miles: 107.45
  • Total actual time to date: 15.82 hours + long run miles: 100.22
I did well in some ways, not so well in others.

Monday we went for a 3.4 mile walk. I had picked up the new orthotics from the podiatrist and tried them out. They are better than the last round but the left one still seems not quite right. They also seemed too big for my shoe, very hard to get in.

Tuesday was a rest day.

Wednesday we ran. I was supposed to do a 45 minute (ish) run. I was NOT feeling the love. I had a bit of chafing from the hike and my keens, most notably on the top of my foot. In the big picture of things, absolutely nothing but it made me crabby. It was pretty warm and I had gotten several bug bites on the hike...which felt on fire. YUCK! Either way I just wasn't into it. I made myself run a 5K and called it good, walking the last mile. 9:30 pace. My feet felt...squished. In a different way, it was odd. Not sure if my feet were just swollen, if the new bigger sized inserts were the issue, if they were in wrong after switching in and out with the rx version or if it was still from the hike. I had chosen not to wear the bunion cushions so that wasn't it. As sucky as the run was, a friend captured this shot of Jeff and I after the run, at our normal "cool down" spot.

Definitely put a smile on my face

Thursday we went to the gym. I was NOT feeling the love here either. I wanted to walk. It was hot out and I wanted to be outside. Jeff made me go to the gym (not really, I knew I needed to, I just didn't want to. When I got home, I was on the DIS a bit and Ann mentioned three words in her update. Road Runner Sale. Sure enough I checked and the shoes I had wanted to try, were an additional $20 off. I decided to order them. I also decided to go a half size up and see if that made a difference. They will arrive tomorrow!

Friday we ran. I was supposed to do a 45 min (ish) run again. However, those 3 words were haunting me. Road. Runner. Sale. Both boys needed new shoes. Evan for tennis and Eric for Cross Country. Both really needed to get fitted. We bit the bullet, dragged the E's to the store, got them fitted and into new shoes. MAN their feet have grown. I really really hope these will last the school year but with my luck, probably not. Like me, they have a wicked high arch and need what is called a "stability" shoe.

We all ended up with different shoes.

For Eric

For Evan

And for me

t461n_1691_0010212348_f_l_primary.jpg

It took FOREVER. Ok not really, but it was not fast. Both boys have different challenges with their feet and add brand/fashion snob to Evan and well, it took a while. I do like the store we use but they always seem a bit understaffed for the services they offer. By the time we were done we had lost some of our running time. We were across the street from a very popular lake park and the plan had been to run 2 loops around the lake after hitting the store. I have gone around that lake a bazillion times walking, or pushing the E's in a double stroller but had never "ran" it before.

We ran one loop.

It was hot

And crowded (though really, not as bad as I had expected)

I was SO not feeling the Love.

I had forgotten to put on the darn bunion cushions as well and really was not interested in a possible tear, 2 days before a 13 mile run.

The end result was 2.8 lame-o miles at a 9:20 pace. I am not saying 9:30 is lame-o, but that my effort felt lame-o! Of course, because we stopped early and the boys walked the loop, we were done before they were! Evan’s new shoes were already chafing. I had let him get the Nike’s which were borderline as I figured if he wore them more, overall that was better than a "better" shoe (for him) that he wore a lot less. In reality he should have gotten a pair of Mizunos that he swore were the most comfy thing on the planet and were a stronger stability shoe. But the kid has a history of foot issues and I opted for something he would wear more. He was not in love with the look of the Mizunos. We determined it was likely just a sock issues (too low) but that remains to be seen. They will go back and get exchanged if the issue continues. He loves the shoes and if it gets him out of skate/boat shoes and into a bit of support even half the time, that is a good thing.

I will say this, I will NOT be getting the runDisney New Balance shoes (or attempting to) at the race expo. For 2 reasons. One, the model that is likely best for me (Mickey/Minnie), is not the design I like (Cinderella/Goofy).

Maybe just maybe there will be something new for PHM that I like better. Two, I just bought 3 pairs of shoes thanks to those darn kids and my wallet is crying. LOL! I may try a pair on at some point, non rD ones, just to see. I don’t think I have ever even tried on the brand before.
Saturday we went to the gym. I spent a bit of the afternoon figuring out my FE gifts for our upcoming cruise. That was fun. I also was very very good about hydrating all day in preparation for my long run on Sunday. Exciting day huh. LOL!

But then we went out for a date! MMMMN yum! If it were the night before the race it would have been a perfect pre-race dinner. Grilled mahi with a yummy coconut sauce with rice and yummy peppers. So good. We sat outside, enjoyed the sunset and yes, had wine with dinner. I even did a little wedding stalking for Mary Ellen. Seriously there had to be 4 weddings there that night, which is pretty normal for the weekends according to our server.

Super cool, one of the groups made an arch with sparklers!

In fact it was so nice, we were reluctant to go home and decided to hit another spot for a glass of wine. It was a late late night, but a lovely one

Sunday was scheduled for 13 miles. The farthest distance yet. Eric was leaving on a 50 mile hike backpacking trip with his scout troop that morning. He had to be there at 6:45 am. It was supposed to be another warm one so I decided I would drop him, and then go for my run. Jeff would start an hour after me and meet me at the end.

It was test fuel day. When I got up, after a whopping 5 hours of sleep, I had one of the stinger gingersnap waffles. Quite tasty but more sugar than my system is used to, especially on an empty stomach. Still, it seemed to sit ok. Right before we left the house, I had one of the double espresso gels. I have never tried a gel before. It was actually ok. I liked the flavor and did not mind the texture. I cannot imagine trying to have one mid race but as a pre run item, it was fine. Again, more sugar than I am used to be seemed to sit ok as well. I even remembered to put the bunion cushions on!

Drop off took a solid 45 minutes but by 7:40 or so I was at my starting spot and on my way. The first half was great. I had ½ of a shot block about 30 minutes in. I did not feel like I needed it but I knew temps were rising and it was quite humid so it seemed like I should take something. At the turnaround I decided to have a whole block. Pace had been good, not too fast but not too slow, felt just right for the most part and I was pleased with my split time.

A whole block was a BAD idea.

That not used to sugar thing caught up with me. About 10 min or so later I started to feel a bit icky. Not in a I am going to get sick way but definitely in a sugar rush unhappy tummy way. One of the things that runners fear is what is called bonking. That is when you deplete your energy reserves and it’s hard to keep going. While this was not the same, it was what felt like, a sugar crash and had a little bit of the same impact.

I had been planning a water stop anyway, this cemented it. I decided to take a short walk break and see if that would settle things a little. It did not seem to help but it did not seem to hurt either. At mile 9.25 I hit the water stop. I also felt like I needed a bio break, tried, and NOTHING. Seriously annoying. I mean why stop if there is nothing there? Stopping is the worst. Not just because you lose time but you start to cool down too fast which means the sweat just comes ON. Bleh. Running some cool water on my hands felt really good though and I followed that up with a nice drink at the water fountain.

For me, I find once I stop like that, it is much harder to get my groove back and keep running, I just kind of lose the mojo. I would say I took about 4 additional walk breaks from that point on, maybe 5. One included another water stop. A lot, possibly all, of it is mental. There is part of me that goes "it is a training run, it cannot be too slow". "it is a training run, do not kill your feet". "it is a training run, you are supposed to be testing fuel". "it is a training run, see how fast you can walk if you take a break" And all sorts of things like that. At 1:40 I had another half a shot block. I did not want to risk a bigger crash and figured it was better to try and maintain.

I was scheduled to run 13 miles. To me, that seemed silly. If you are going to go that far, might as well make it 13.1! So I did.

And I finished

In the upright position :cool1::cool1::cool1:

Nothing tore or bled (although at mile 10 I felt the right bunion cushion totally move up to the front of my foot lol).

I actually felt pretty ok. Still do.

The verdict?

2:15:xx.

I am very ok with that time, especially given all the stops. I was a bit surprised by it to be honest. My split time was much better (1:03:xx) but it felt like I had lost a lot of time stopping. Still, according to my watch, when I was actually running, I was never over the 10 minute mark. That made me happy. Will the actual race be faster than that? Maybe. I do not think it is likely to be slower. Race adrenaline + heat though could equal that exact result, as they may cancel out each other. Not to mention a picture or two. Maybe. We will see. I think the conditions I ran in (63 at the start, 73 at the finish, 80% humidity) were best case scenario for Anaheim at 5:30 - 8am in August. I would be thrilled with less humidity. However I expect it could be warmer and have started the daily check to see where it is landing.

Best part? We went to see the Blue Angels after wards, walked quite a bit. Walked again tonight. I should be able to spend some time in the parks after we clean up and eat, and not be limping. A little stiff but that was all. I hope!

I have one more long run scheduled before the trip, 14 miles. I just realized today that it will be the morning after my 30th HS reunion.
I think I may need to change my schedule that weekend! Then again, what is worse, be a bit stiff and sore at the reunion, or behave at the reunion so I can run 14 miles the next morning?

Really not sure how I want to approach the fuel situation. :confused3 I am not convinced any of it made a difference, however with the heat it does seem prudent to do something. The gel did not help me avoid the bio break. But maybe it did and that’s a mental thing too. I have no idea.
I have looked at the race course and if I have to take a bio break, I would like to do it in the parks. Given that we are out of the parks at mile 4 and for the entire rest of the race that will not happen.

I had better hold it then.

I have also looked at the course. Miles 4-8 are running right into the sun. I think my strategy is going to be for a faster first 8, and save my breaks for the back 5 if needed. Not at all what you are supposed to do but I’d like to get out of the sun sooner rather than later. We will start before the sun rises. My guess is we will start at the latest at 5:45. It will likely be earlier as I don’t think they wait a full 5 between corrals, more like 2 minutes. If that is the case, 5:36 start. Ish.

Before the start, it will be a bit crowded, and dark

It will look something like this!

except the letter is different, and then we will be off!

Well, the first group will anyway. LOL

Sun should rise around 6:23.

Given that, I started thinking about my water stops. I am thinking it is really going to depend on how warm it is. Ideally I will not stop until the 3rd water stop, at about mile 4.5. I just cannot see needing any before that plus that gets me out of the park before stopping. Given that the sun will not have risen, that may be too early for the first stop. I would like to make it not more than 3 water stops total, so probably will target (mentally) the ones at 4.5, 7.5 and 10.25. It is interesting as there seems to be several stops around the stadium. I am kind of expecting the one before and right after to be more congested and so am looking at the last of the 3 as my target stop. That may not be the case but 3 water stops in basically 1.5 miles is a lot. It is also where folks probably need and want it the most I guess, right after the run straight into the sun part of the course. There is one more after that but I would prefer to skip that one if I can, too much extra fluid will definitely slow me down.

In other race news I have decided. I think. I am NOT going to wear the yellow Belle outfit. I wore the knickers and tank for the run on Sunday. It was 63 at the start, 73 at the end and 80% humidity. It was fine. More importantly, I could get the fuel out of my pocket and had easy access to my phone. I will bring Belle as a backup in case it is so hot I absolutely don't think I can do the knickers. Or, I could skip the tank and just run in the sports bra. Not the look I would prefer at ALL but it is an option and I have done it before. The idea of no costume or theme at all kind of bummed me out, it's not very Disney! Even though the DL half (and WDW half/full) are not as costumed up as PHM and as I am sure the new Star Wars and Avengers will be, a lot of folks do dress up. I needed something.

Ok, I WANTED something.

So I made something.

More accurately I designed something. Someone else is making it.

It is a headband

It makes me smile.

And it's all mine.

It should ship in about 6 days. I cannot wait to see it.

I was just going to suggest a hair piece to make some costume-type look!
Cute!

Glad your feet are holding up!

Too bad all those shoes are so expensive!

Woo Hoo for wedding stalking! :cool1: Love it! :thumbsup2

I saw those shoes at the running store. Let me know how they work for you. They look very cute and light weight. Going to try my new shoes tomorrow. :thumbsup2

And ouch to the pocket book. I can imagine buying three good pairs of shoes at once is an ouch for sure.

Love the head band.

So glad that your long run went well. It sounds like you are right on track for the 1/2. What is the plan now? Do you scale back on mileage before the race?

I'm so glad that your run went well! That's just awesome. I'm far behind my goal of 10 miles by the end of this month, based on my setback, so I'm working on that for September.

Oof, running shoes are such a setback. Three pairs, I can't imagine.

I've been working through the fuel component too. Because I'm a lot slower than you, I'm out for longer, so I've been trying to figure out how much to hydrate, when to eat, what to eat. We're just all different, we have to find what works for us.

Just found this TR! I don't know where I have been! Sounds like your journey to the half is similar to mine with nagging injuries! I JUST decided today I am going to be out there for the DLH weekend. I am gonna try and get to the marathon to cheer you all on!

What beautiful scenery to hike around.

You are doing fabulous and will have a wonderful race. The headband is a great idea!!!!

Ouch on the shoes but if you all have good fitting shoes then time and money well spent.

Catching up.

Love the shoes. :thumbsup2

Hope your foot is better. Looks painful. I'm glad that you got Corral C. Should be a fun corral, right?

What a gorgeous spot to go hiking. It's absolutely beautiful and I'm so envious.

Yay for running your first half distance!! It's an amazing accomplishment. And finishing upright & with no bodily damage! :thumbsup2 Seems like you're in fairly decent shape to say the least. Pity the fuel didn't help at all (nor hurt?) but I hope you get things worked out in a way you like before the race (so soon!)

Shoes look great, at least visually! I don't see the appeal in the Run Disney shoes myself, but maybe that's just me. Ah well.

Caught up. Sounds like your training is going well, and definitely some great pictures from your hike. :thumbsup2
