Confessions of a Lurker (Hobbling through WDW)

I could spend all day shopping at Mitsukoshi! Love the TR so far!:goodvibes

Thanks for following along. I couldn't remember the name of the store, but it is awesome. I also like spending a little time in the toy museum by the entrance.

More to come this weekend.

I lost interest in F&W last year when I watched some poor girl (I'm guessing maybe 11 or 12) try to steer her sloppy potted mother and her foul mouthed boyfriend out of the park. Honestly, the Mom fell twice and couldn't keep her drink from spilling. It's not enough to treat Epcot like a pub crawl, but to get sloppy drunk in front of your kids and expect them to deal with the consequences was way too much.

That's so sad. :sad2:

Great update, Jim. I'm sorry about your experiences with F&W. That is one of the things we have not done yet that we want to do (along with the Flower & Garden show and staying at the AKL). Some parents just don't have a clue; our one and only experience at the POR-Riverside watching Piano Bob was with a mother who had one or two many drinks sitting with her kids...it turned us off from going back again.

You won't believe where MickeyNicki went for lunch again!!! Todd wasn't feeling wherever they were supposed to go, they could have actually gotten a walk-up at 2:15 at LeCellier, but Todd insisted on walking a little more and if they couldn't find anything else they'd go back to LeCellier. Well, after Nicki was told on the phone that EVERY place had availability except LeCellier, Norway and Via Napoli, Todd walked up to Via Napoli and they ate their third meal there. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I really love how you jsut sit and enjoy; although I'm sure if your knee was better you would have enjoyed even more. I hope one day I get to finally meet you.

I've been following her meal reviews and I am convinced that Todd is real life walking pixie dust. Me, I can arrive 10 minutes before an ADR and have to wait a half hour. Of course, maybe that's because a Todd beat me to the door!

It would have been nicer not to hobble on one knee, but I always take the sit and look around approach, especially if I'm alone. When I lived SLC, I used to take a friend's son (who has some disabilities) to Disneyland and I loved sitting in New Orleans Square (by their Splash Mtn and Train Station).

Once I got used to the idea that I was coming back, I stopped feeling like I needed to ride as many rides as possible, and that made it fun to take time and people watch. And boy, do you get to see all types wandering by.

Hope you have plans for a wonderful turkey day.

More confessions. I got distracted from my TR by a turkey and his side dishes.

Now that all the fun is over and the dishes are clean, I'm sobered up and realizing that it will be at least another year before I get back to Florida. So instead of wallowing in self pity, here's the last 2 installments of my TR.

Sunday morning. Time for Animal Kingdom (4 parks, 3 days).

I got up early, packed, left my bags at the bell desk at Kidani (kept a small bag with swimsuit and shirt), and then headed to Boma for breakfast.

I must bring out the mothering instinct in Boma waitresses, cause the waitress took one look at me and brought out a huge glass of juice. Over the course of breakfast, that glass got filled 3 times. So it may be more accurate to say that I floated, not walked, out of Boma, and only after a plat of pineapple, melon, really gooey (in a good sense) pecan rolls, mini chocolate croissants, and a plate of pancakes and sausage. I love breakfast at Boma.

There was a huge crowd at the bus stop for Animal Kingdom and to add insult to injury, when a bus finally came it was completely filled from Kidani (one of the benefits of staying at Kidani). After 20 minutes a bus came and it filled with another 30 of us waiting at the stop. Finally they commandeered a bus and we got to AK about 50 minutes after I arrived at the bus stop. So I missed the rope drop, but that's OK. Today is my slow day.

AK has the best places for sitting; here's a top 15 list:

1. Along the path between the boneyard and Nemo (along the river). This is very quiet and almost empty most times.
2. Next to the Rock Shop looking out at Triceratops Spin. Good shade for a sunny day
3. Along the path from the boneyard to Dinosaur (by the hamburger joint). This is a good place to relax while the kids are in the boneyard.
4. Behind A Bug's Life (by the insect demonstration). A little noisy when the show lets out.
5. Along the river near the bridge to Africa (there are great bird exhibits on this little used path).
6. On the Buddha Tree by the bridge to Asia (this is great for family photos).
7. Behind the shack that sells cola and blueberry icees. Technically, this is a smoking zone, but sometimes it's empty and a nice place to watch the river.
8. Outside Yak & Yeti's counter service. During meal times, this is crowded, but other times, it's a good spot to watch the Kali River drenched crowds slop their way back to civilization.
9. Outside the main mercantile shop (a good shady location).
10. On the stone ledge around the tree in the heart of the African village (from this vantage point, you can see the musicians playing at Tusker House).
11. On the benches near the fast passes for Kilimanjaro Safaris. Sometimes they do lessons here, so you have to be willing to participate (or at least be part of) an impromptu classroom to sit on these benches).
12. Along the path to the Lion King (there are a number of great water fountains along this path, plus there are places to sit where you can watch the character greetings).
13. At Flights of Wonder. Ok, technically, this is a show and not just a place to sit, but this is a great place to people watch as they jump when the parrots and hornbills fly past.

And the best 2 spots:

14. Along the Pangani trail: There is a great spot by the gorillas and a water fountain where you can just sit back and enjoy the crowds and the animals. Honestly, I spent 2 hours there one trip, just watching the apes and the gorrillas too . . .

15. In the bird enclosure on the Maharaja Jungle Trek. It is amazing how many birds you can see in this enclosure, but you have to sit still and watch. You can't just walk through and expect to see a fraction of the birds here. There is, of course, a hazard in sitting in a bird enclosure for any length of time (yep, that's personal experience speaking).

So on this trip, I stopped along the walk to Discovery Island (near the Anteater). Then I wandered through the shops, taking time to stop and sit near the Lilo and Stitch character greeting (the trees were in bloom, in November, which seems just wrong to someone from Chicago). I stopped again, near the Africa bridge (and watched the guy selling the big blow up rubber globes from a cart).

From there, I hobbled to the Kilimanjaro Safari Ride. Bar none, this is my favorite ride in all WDW. And I love doing it early in the morning (despite the busses and all my sitting, it's only about 9:30 am) and late in the afternoon when the animals are most active.

There was no line to speak of, just a hike through the woods to the loading dock. We had a great driver who was very personable without being too corny (I like the Jungle Boat humor on the Jungle Boat ride; frankly, I'd be just fine if they took out the whole Poachers Chase at the end of this ride and just let us all enjoy the animals.

I included a couple of phone photos at the end of this post. I missed a few of the jungle animals (e.g., Bongo), but we saw most of the animals on the chart and had great views of mandrill monkeys, warthogs, lions, cheetahs (they were out walking in their enclosure), elephant families, okapi, antelope and rhinos. It was once again a great ride.

I spent time around the African Village watching the drummers and shopping in the stores. I walked back to Discovery Island and sat along my favorite riverside path (by the stork exhibits).

As I wandered along the path, I hit the stroller park for A Bug's Life and the attendants let me join the path to the theater from here, which saved me a mile of walking . . . Enjoyed the joy, got wet from the toxic roach spit etc.

I wasn't hungry, but I had one more CS credit and I wouldn't really have a chance to eat again until I was home in Chicago at midnight, so I went in search of lunch. I should have gone to Dinosaur land for the basic burger meal, but instead I ended up at Pizzafari (I don't care for bbq but I understand that Flame Tree is a good lunch choice). Pizzafari is not. I don't know why I do this to myself, but I always end up regretting the rubber bread with a pool of cheese grease that passes for pizza at WDW. Nuff said.

I made a few more stops along the return trip (my knee having pretty much given up the ghost). There are convenient benches all the way to the bus stop, so I managed the force walk back to the bus and the quick ride back to the resort.

Me in the Kingdom.

I love all the "favorite sitting places" at AK...we'll have to check those out. And yes, Flame Tree is very good--it is one of our favorite CS's of all the parks and I love the pulled pork and ribs and Mark loves the chicken. We learned a LONG time ago to never eat pizza at Disney World (or in Florida for that matter).

Great safari pictures and I love the photo of you. :)

What do you mean you won't be back to Florida for a year? I can't believe you won't fit in a short trip before a year is up.

Final Installment:

Normally, the last day at WDW is a bit of a downer, but when its only a 3 day weekend, there's just no time for moping around.

As my luggage was at the bell desk, I had my swimshorts and shirt in a small bag with me. When I got back to Kidani, I headed down to the fitness center/pool area and changed in the locker rooms (which were really nice, clean and roomy). After my quick change, I headed off to the pool for a nice pre-flight swim. (When I'm home, I can fool myself into exercising by swimming. When I close my eyes and smell the chlorine, I picture myself on vacation. So when I'm on vacation, I make sure to get in enough swimming to keep this fantasy working for the next several months).

BIG MISTAKE.

Saturday, it was in the 40s, but the pool was warm so the only issue was getting out of the pool and getting to the towels before the ice formed.

Sunday, it got to the low 60s, so apparently they turned off the pool heater. Now the air might have gotten to the 60s, but the water was still frigid from the last couple of days. I couldn't last more than 10 minutes (and my teeth chattered for another 50 minutes) and I was the only one in the water.

I made the switch to the hot tub, to join 3 kids and 2 grownups all escaping the ice water in the main pool. After thawing, I needed to dry off both myself and my swim suit, since my flight was now only 5 hours away.

So, of course, I found a great place to sit. There are two of those huge wooden rockers right by the animal overlook. So I had a great sit, watched Nyalas and Waterbuck come down to their pool for a drink, watched the african vultures spread their wings in the sun, watched the Okapi run along the back fence. In short, I had a nice time relaxing before collecting my bags, boarding the Magic Express and heading back to the real world.

Thanks for following along, and best wishes on your next trip to the World.

We learned a LONG time ago to never eat pizza at Disney World (or in Florida for that matter).

I'm a tragically slow learner. I've tried pizza at Pizza Planet in HS, somewhere in Fantasyland in MK, and worst of all, room service at VWL. I must have been one of those kids who has to stick their fingers in sockets more than once to get the point.

The conference I attended switches between West Coast and East Coast so next year is in Phoenix. I might try for a long weekend in September if I end up with points that have to be used this year (in other words, if my DB's switch of plans to the Caribbean would mean that I might lose some borrowed points, I'm going to find some way to use them or maybe rent them). He's still working on what exactly they want us to do for a march vacation . . .

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

I'm sorry the report is at an end...I've really enjoyed it. I hope you still come to the DIS once in awhile (and you can post on other TR's...we won't scare you away...we promise).

I love the socket story...sounds like my youngest son.

Keep me in mind if you are going to "lose" points in case my other person backs out on us.

We had a great Thanksgiving (although I'm glad it is over...I'm not big on holidays with either of our families). Hope you had a good one too.

Thanks for getting past the turkey to complete your trip report. I thought you should know that there are a lot of us lurkers reading the trip reports, and we only comment at the end so as not to slow you down.I enjoy seeing things from a singles view point.:goodvibes

This TR has been so fun to read... I'm a little sad it's over. Thanks for sharing your trip with us!

I really enjoyed reading your report! I truly hope you get back to WDW sooner than next year and I hope you continue to write PTRs/TRs! :thumbsup2

Thanks so much for lurking along with me. I've been to WDW on several trips alone or had extra days at the end of family trips, and I find that its a very different experience for me. I spend less time in lines and on rides, and more time enjoying the sights, shows and pools (and shops). And I always seem to have more interactions with other friendly people (I guess since I'm not focused on my parents or my nieces, I'm more available to just talk with neighbors on the boat or folks at the bar).

Thanks so much for the encouragement. My DB and his family are set on doing the Caribbean in 2011 and then back to WDW in 2012, so I won't be doing the annual family trip. Maybe I can swing back in the fall, but I kinda thinking of using the vacation points I would otherwise have to sell or rent and seeing if I could use them at Hong Kong or Tokyo Disneyland (in which case I will definitely write a TR).
