Concierge tipping

Someone on these boards once posted that a good formula to use for tipping concierge hosts was $5 per child per day and $7 per adult per day. That seems pretty much in line with what people have been suggesting so far on this post I think. I have another question though, I understand that you can charge concierge tips to your account. Is the same true for the bartender tip? Or do we need to bring cash for him/her? Never been a big fan of handing people cash tips.

There is no regular tipping voucher for the bartender. It might be possible to get one printed up?? Not sure tho....

And for a 7 day cruise for 2 adults at $7 per adult per day would be $14 x 7=$98 divided among 3 people..or about $33 each. Have seen folks reporting tipping many times above that amount tho---

again, not making fun of you so lets get that straight. do i believe an officer would lie? lol, yes. if only to make things easier on everyone. uncleromulus was told that tips are pooled so were they lied to? it does happen you know. i doubt anyone can say for sure one way or the other how things run. you can still do what you want and maybe they do get the portion someone designates to them…..or maybe not.

I think actually we are both right, I respect Uncleromulus, I think that if you do not designate whom then its an automatic pooled tip, and they as a team wouldn't promote designating tips to a single host. For the reasons quoted before, but at the same time, if you want to designate someone and thats your wish then you can do so. I do not think the staff lie.

A past example was before concierge tipping came in you had to offer three times before they accepted it, on the first two refusals they're not lying they are following company policy.

You posted that after we designate a tip they would pool it anyway, that would put them in a potential situation that they didn't tell you the truth.

I have to say having sailed concierge a number of times each time is slightly different, so we all may get a slightly different experience.

True but you can get spare envelopes at guest services if you wish.

And yes I thought from threads like these people exaggerate the tips they give here and then do less on ship, from personal 'eavesdropping', I would say the ones i heard tipped way and above what I expected, bar one guy who complained about all tips and had every tip wiped off his portfolio, he said he thought everything was included.

Wouldn't it be nice to know IF indeed they work mostly (or exclusively)for tips??

Might be nice just as a start to know exactly who we are tipping--

They do, they get about $100 a week on an officer grade. Anything/everything else is made by tips.

And the source for that?

I tried 3x to DCL to come clean on this and all I ever got in response to a direct question (if Concierge hosts were a tipped position) was that all DCL employees earn a salary that is agreed to and negotiated under a contract. Period.

I cant tell you the source for that, just it is that. True they normally will not answer that question.

And yet--IF Concierge is truly a tipped position, should they not come out and just say so??

We tipped $150. Here's my formula. DCL recommends $12/day for tips for the servers and stateroom host. I just multiplied that by the 3 C-lounge hosts and came up with $36/day. For our 4 night cruise, I multiplied by 4 and came up with $144. I then rounded it up to $150 so they'd get $50/each. Tipping concierge is a piece of cake!

edited to add "for the servers and stateroom host".

we were on the Magic recently on a 7 day and gave our Host $150.00. You dont have multiple hosts on the Magic like you do on the Dream. There are two hosts but we only ever had dealings with one. I think one takes port rooms and the other takes the starboard side.

Yes that is correct one each side on the classics.

But they do, there are tip forms given out as I posted on this thread showing that a tip is expected.

Don't the tip forms say "at your discretion"--or something like that??? That's not really "expected"---more like "appreciated".

Where do they recommend $12 a day for Concierge?

I've not seen that anywhere.

Yes as said at your discretion that is what DIsney always says at a tippable position, so it is a tippable position what you want to tip is up to you.

You are slipping words, its a tippable position, it is expected that you consider a tip, there is a form with places to be filled in for a tip, its all pointing in the same direction, its a typable position, so expected, if you do not want to tip thats your choice, but its still expected.

In the MDRs there are recommended tips, so the servers work for them so it is expected, if someone wants to stiff them that is down to them, but its a fair assumption the servers expect to be tipped.

I would suggest you re read their post it is clear they based it on the server tip x 3. The poster didn't say that DCL said that they said thats how they worked thiers out.

I just came off the three day Disney Dream, May 1-4, in a one bedroom suite with three adults, Mom 56, Dad 54, Son 25. There are tip envelopes in the concierge lounge for concierge hosts, dining servers and stateroom hosts. I tipped, $50 cash per concierge host, Ashley, Tracey and Angeline and used the concierge host envelopes and wrote their names on each one. I also used the concierge envelopes to tip the bartender Edi, $30, by writing his name on the envelope and tipped Hector the food server in the lounge, $25 and used a concierge envelope, and wrote his name on the outside of the envelope. I handed these envelopes to them individually. I saw many handing over an envelope for general concierge, with one set amount to be split by everyone. I think either way is correct. I also tipped $30 extra above and beyond to Keyand, my stateroom host, because I loved him and he became my brother on this trip. There was also a stateroom worker that traveled with him (in disposable gloves) that just cleaned the toilets. I tipped him $25. He was very nice, and considering his job, should have gotten the best tips of all.

My son, who is only 25, wanted to know if this cruise would be affordable if he and his friends went. He really loves Disney and has had many trips to the Grand Floridian and Wilderness Lodge. We went on the Disney Magic in 1998, Second sailing after the inaugural. I want my son to take this cruise with his friends, so I am telling him to give his best based on his station in life. He will do much more when he is ten years older and married with children. No one expects a young couple to tip the same as as the big Sugar Daddy Grandpa, which is what we are now. Go and enjoy, they are always happy to see you, it is the variety of guests that keep them going. Will do a trip report later.

Agree,

They don't. My formula was based off of the recommend $12/day gratuity for servers and stateroom host.

So you are saying that for you each concierge was worth what the server/stateroom host was worth--tipping wise?

If that is reasonable--then why doesn't DCL just say that (or something like that) is the recommended tip for Concierge?????

Seems easy enough to do---

I think with respect that has been covered through the thread, I think it may be a good idea to read back all of the posts as it is covered fully already. I do not mean any disrespect however, we seem to be going around in ever decreasing circles.

I covered that personally earlier.

So they equated the concierge hosts with the dining room server--
