Concert etiquette?

I can't believe that anyone would go to a concert like Billy Joel or Toby Kieth and actually expect people to sit.

Personally, stand away. Many times, some people just will never be happy unless everyone else conforms to them.

I don't "expect" anyone to sit, and I don't think anyone should conform to anything for me. But, I'm short and paying $100 to go to a concert and not be able to see anything for 2 hours is a waste of money in my opinion, so I just don't go. It stinks and it is a shame (to me), but I know it will be like that at every show, so I just don't do it anymore.

Going to a concert isn't just listening to the music, it's an experience . I've been to many many concerts and I never sit. During Bon Jovi shows, they WANT up on your feet. The excitement from the audience can really make or break a show so I have no issue with standing even if I want to sit .

That said , stand all you want but put those dang signs down!!! Those block views ! You don't need to hold them up all show or for long periods of time. If the band acknowledges your sign, PUT IT DOWN. If they aren't looking , put it down. Trust me, once the band sees/reads your sign, they'll ignore it the rest of the show. They got your message, now stop blocking everyone else's view!

Where did you see Toby? I've seen him about 14 times in NJ and PA and no one ever sits during his concerts. :confused3

Mansfield, MA; used to be Great Woods but I can't remember what it is now (or was then).

Personally, I would find a concert where everyone sat the entire time very boring.

I don't just want to sit and watch someone stand/sit and sing. I can listen to them at home for free. I like performers who are all over the stage and putting on a performance. And in that the audience gets into the music and feels the need to stand and move!

I get what folks are saying about being short. DD is short. But the best concerts are the ones with performers who move around on stage enough that she can and does see.

(that and venues that are slightly inclined so she can stand a wee bit higher than the ones all the way down front :cool1:)

My wife and I went to see Billy Joel last night. Awesome concert and we had great seats - two rows up off the floor, just to the side of the stage :thumbsup2

Anyhow, the concert gets going and naturally, pretty much the whole arena stands for the first couple songs. :cool1: :cool1: The concert goes on and the few rows around us (including the row in front of us) stays up and is singing and dancing along. Well, the women next to me end up getting in a pretty heated argument with the group behind them, an older (70-ish) group of adults who were getting pretty ticked that the women in front of them wouldn't sit down.

At some point, security got called over (I don't know if it was the people next to me or the older folks behind them who got security. I couldn't hear what was being said, but nothing ever seemed to happen. There were times when everyone sat and there were others when nearly everyone was standing again.

So, long story short, who was in the right in your opinion? Do people have the right to be able to watch a concert without having to stand? Or is it acceptable to stand throughout a concert?

I've never been to a concert (except a classical musical concert) where the entire audience did not stand almost the entire time.

I went to an Eagles concert a couple months ago. When people began standing, Don Henley told them to sit down. They only allow standing at their concerts for one song at the end of the concert.

We saw The Eagles in Nov and people stood off and on. The only comment ever made to anyone in the crowd was before the song right before they took an intermission Glen Frey told this woman in the front row to stop texting and enjoy the show, she could text in 3 min when they took an intermission. Basically he was calling her rude.

I find myself going with the flow at concerts. I'm not a big get up in the aisle and dance but if people around me are standing I will and if its more mellow and people are sitting, I'll do that as well. I just like to be able to see.

I saw Pearl Jam back in October and figured we'd be standing the whole time, but there was actually a chunk of time where most of the audience sat. Everyone stood and rocked out until the first break. When they came back, even Eddie Vedder was sitting and they took it easy with a couple of slower songs. During that time the crowd pretty much sat down (well, except the one guy on my aisle who was a wee bit intoxicated and I was worried about him falling over a railing all night long, but thats another story). After the second little break, they were back into full rock mode (covered Pink Floyd Mother....awesome by the way!). The people in front of me stood up. Everyone else was seated...so I decided I was going to stand up because I wanted (no...needed) to see. Then everyone else followed suit and we rocked the rest of the night. I guess some people could have gotten upset that we stood up, but we were with a cool crowd, and everyone just followed suit. It was all good~
