Concerned about smokers

Thank you all for your replies. We really would like to enjoy sitting on a verandah, especially in the morning and late evening. We were on the Big Red Boat 22 years ago and I was hoping things have changed regarding smoking.

I've had cancer twice (including lung) and need to avoid smoke. If anyone wants to smoke I feel that is their business, health issue, and odor problem. I just don't like it imposed on me or my family. Anyhoo...I will take it into consideration when booking a cruise.

I realize this is a Disney forum so I'll get yelled at...but...Celebrity doesn't allow smoking in staterooms or on verandahs. They don't allow it many places on their ships at all. Some outside areas and maybe the casino. I just got off a 7 day on the Silhouette last month and I don't need all the fingers on one hand to count the number of times I encountered smoke. Perhaps you might want to choose a different cruise line and then spend a few days at WDW if you're really craving Disney.

Please reconsider. On our first and only Disney cruise last August we had smokers on both sides of our verandah room. Surprisingly , it was NEVER an issue due to the winds while sailing. I think the only issue you may have is when you are docked in a port, other than that, you are not affected at all due to the ship in motion. There were several nights my husband and I both sat on our verandah and could see the smoke from the rooms on each side of us, but I could not smell it at all. I hope you don't decide to give up on Disney due to the smoking, it is not a factor at all while the ship is in motion. When the ship was in port we were too busy with excursions, so I can not comment on that. I hope you have a great cruise on whatever ship you choose.

The wind DID NOT help move the smoke. EVER. Not even on sea days Cabin location may pay a role (we were in a 5E). This was in March on an Eastern.

We've only had one verandah room. Both rooms on either side had smokers. The people in the room aft of us didn't smoke out there all that often, but when they did, it was a cigar

The people in the room forward of us smoked all the time. I don't think they were ever not out on the verandah smoking. Possibly there were 3 or 4 smokers, all taking turns, I don't know. And while the ship was moving the smoke would blow directly aft (onto our verandah)

We were upgraded to this room, and I'm just really glad I didn't pay for it, since we really couldn't use it that often.

We were on the Jan. 12 Fantasy Eastern in a deck 5 starboard verandah stateroom and never once smelled smoke when we were on our verandah.

I'm just glad they don't allow smoking in any interiors spaces. I really wouldn't mind them banning it all together.

I think that smoking is the big reason that we do not book verandah rooms. We had a verandah on our first cruise on the Wonder and every time that we went out it would be smoky. Remember a lot of people book verandahs on Disney because they can smoke. We have been booking inside rooms and enjoying going to the public nonsmoking decks since we could not enjoy our verandah when we had it.

Actually, I just looked it up. The entire interior of the ships is non-smoking (including the casino), verandahs as well. Plus most of the outdoor areas. That's about as good as we're likely to see. Direct from Celebrity's website:

Therefore, cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking is permitted in designated outdoor areas of the ship. Smoking is not permitted in any dining venue, casino, theater, lounge, hallway, elevator, or corridor. This policy includes smoking-like products such as electronic cigarettes. Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom, nor on any stateroom veranda. If you are in violation of this policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to your SeaPass® account and you may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy. I doubt there will be a completely smoke-free cruise ship anytime in the near future. It was tried once before and failed. The Carnival Paradise was a completely smoke-free ship....from the crew who built it to the crew who sailed her. the guest had to sign a waiver stating they knew it was smoke free and would be fined $250 if found smoking or even with just smoking supplies. It had to switch to a smoking cruise as it was not viable.

History

The Paradise was built to be the world's first completely non-smoking cruise ship. Every step of her construction was done by non-smoking personnel and she was entered into service supported by several anti-smoking and cancer-prevention groups. "No smoking" signs were placed prominently on both sides of the ship and on the stern under the name.

Non-smoking rules were strictly enforced. No smoking materials of any kind were permitted aboard. If anything was seen or found, the passenger was fined $250 and put off at the next port (transportation home to be provided at passenger's own expense). Due to poor revenue, Carnival decided to discontinue the smoke-free ship in December 2003 because non-smokers tend to not drink or gamble as much as those accustomed to smoke

As a non-smoker, I really wish they wouldn't classify e-cigs the same as regular. E ciggs have no smoke, no side effects to bystanders and it would encourage people to use them more if they can go places with their e-cig that they couldn't with a regular cigarette. I doubt they are good for you, but they are better than inhaling burning toxins. (and then sharing those toxins around. If everyone would quit, it would be great, but I don't care if people want their addiction to nicotine, just as long as it doesn't hurt others. (I like my addiction to caffeine!)

I agree, at least for the verandahs they would be fine. I once sat next to a lady on a plane (on way to Disney lol) who was a nervous wreck on her first plane ride. She was a smoker and took out a vapor electronic cigarette. Smoke really bothers me, but this did not at all. It was a smell, but it was like someone with an unlit cigarette - so you could smell a slight tobacco smell, but no smoke. It didn't bother me (but her nervousness was a different story) lol. Outdoors, these would not be an issue anyone could detect, I don't think.

I felt bad on our recent cruise, for a family a few doors down from us. Upon going to our stateroom, we could detect a serious smell of cigarette smoke in the hallway...it was gross! We dropped our bags, checked out the room, etc. and headed out. The lady a few doors down was in the hall, nicely describing her issue to the stateroom host and another official. They're room reeked so bad, she couldn't stand it. Little kids with asthma, the bed, the couch, the towels...everything smelled of cigarette smoke. She didn't want to change rooms, unless their connecting room occupants (her parents) could switch too. I felt so bad for them. Turned out, she was part of my meet group (how I got the full story). Apparently they did a full stripdown of the room and deep cleaned everything...made it right eventually, but it was her very first cruise...felt awful for her.

We ended up having smoking neighbors that cruise...it sucked because we couldn't be out on or verandah at our leisure....it was dependent on whether or not our neighbor was on a smoke break. It was just too much to sit and suffer with the stench, so we'd wait for them not to be there.

We've been on four DCL cruises...2 of them with smoking neighbors.

I never read through all the post but wanted to write, we had a terrible time with smoke on our 7n western in march. People to the left and right of us (ours and inlaws in the middle) were heavy heavy smokers, and were out on their veranda every time I went to enjoy it. They also hung out late at night smoking.

In ontario we have been smoke free for over 8 years(public places that is), so being around smoke is very hard for me, I get really bad headaches, and my daughter sneezes.

....but. I did book a veranda for my next cruise... And next time I will say something.

(First I better put on my flak jacket) As a smoker I do choose a verandah because of the ability it gives me to sit out there in private and have a smoke... As long as the ship rules say I can and I pay my fare then that I get to have that privilege while outside on my balcony (obviously not inside my cabin, I do not smoke inside my own home even).

However I also understand why folks can find smoking offensive, and that exposure to second hand smoke is not a choice. I specifically choose an aft cabin because I figure the smoke will have fewer cabins to drift past... just like if I was concerned about being exposed to smoke on my verandah... I would likely choose a cabin that is far forward as possible because the smoke would be carried away from and not past my balcony.

It is hard for both sides... those who do not want to be exposed to smokers.... as well as for those that smoke. You often feel like a pariah... huddling around a small public ashtray (usually in a not so fun spot) with your fellow smokers... getting disapproving, and often not so veiled nasty looks from those passing by.

International travelers often smoke more than Americans now... so honestly I can't see ships becoming completely non smoking. Although I can imagine it would be a scheduling nightmare... I could see the wisdom of smoking sections... kinda like they do in hotels... as well as non-smoking sections. But as Murphy might claim... there will always be someone who is unhappy with whatever accommodation are made.. be it the smoker or non-smoker.

Umm, not to stir the pot but what exactly are you going to say? Smoking is allowed on balconies. Due to the limited amount of smoking areas on the ship, I'd say that many smokers do book balconies to give them a place to light up in comfort.

I don't smoke but am considering taking a friend on a future cruise who does. If he goes I will book a balcony for him.

Well, you can write to DCL to say that you do not like the policy that guests can smoke on the verandahs...but since they are allowed to, you can ask your neighbor not to smoke (you can always ask), but they aren't required to comply. If they booked the verandah specifically so they could smoke there, I wouldn't expect them to comply. Guests who want to be certain they completely avoid smoke do have the option of booking a stateroom without a verandah.

It would be nice if they could do something like port-side verandahs are smoking and starboard-side verandahs are non-smoking. Then when you book a verandah room you could state your preference of smoking, non-smoking or no preference.

Obviously that would add difficulty to the whole process. And it would be a preference that they try to accommodate, not a guarantee.

But maybe they could give priority to guests with medical reasons over those who just "don't like the smell of smoke" Like, I have a client with a severe smoke allergy. He lives in a townhouse, and he was inside his house with all the doors and windows closed and his neighbor 4 houses down was outside on his porch smoking... and my client ended up in the hospital.


Also, I'm a HUGE supporter of e-cigarettes! They are fantastic! They sometimes have a slight smell while using them (depending on the flavor of the vapor...) but the smell quickly disappears and doesn't leave any traces behind! There is no smoke, tar, ash, tobacco, carcinogens or toxins with e-cigarettes... just water vapor, nicotine and artificial flavoring!
