ok, i live in northern canada and my family and i are going to disney in august...how will our 19 month survive? when is is manageable outside...heat-wise, what time of evening does it cool off. suggestions welcomed! thanks

interested to see what others say. We are also going in august with a toddler (she'll be a couple months older than yours) and so far we have bought one of those portable spray/fan toys. We also are planning a lot of AC breaks and swim/pool breaks. She gets hot so easily! A lot of rides and lines in MK have AC, but it's AK that I am really worried about.

I took my DD when she was 2 before we knew she was heat intolerant but I still took extra precautions because I did know she was prone to dehydration. Look online for a clip on fan for the stroller- one with flexible blades that can't hurt little fingers. If you have a fridge in your room, freeze water bottles and bring them with you to the park- they will melt and be drinkable throughout the day but, while frozen, they are also great for your LO to cool off with. I also brought a water misting fan to mist her while we waited in line. Dress LO very cool- tank tops, lighweight cotton, sandals or flip flops since he/she will likely not be walking much anyway! Take frequent "indoor" breaks. Many attractions are indoors and air conditioned or, you can always pop into a counter service restaurant for a water/snack break.

I am taking my DD this August and now know she is heat intolerant so, again, I will be taking extra precautions! Even though she is 7, she will be in a stroller, with a fan. Lots of water- in fact, I am hanging a hydration pack from the back of the stroller so she can sip water easily. Again, dressing her cool is key. There are also areas for the kids to splash around so take advantage of those! And, if you're doing an extended stay and have time, take a mid day break and head back to your hotel for a swim or just to nap in the cool!

It is definitely hot there in August- I won't downplay that. But, with planning, you can keep your LO fairly comfortable and make sure the trip is the dream you hope for!

The last time we went in the summer it was 107 degrees! But just to give you hope....we are going again this August. The heat did not deter us. Just take your time. Stop for breaks. Early mornings and late afternoon into evening are the best times. Spend you high noons at the resort at the pool or napping in the room. Just don't try to over do it. We only see the things we really really want to. We watch the shows (especially indoor ones with the AC). If the kids seem over heated we would take a break in a store with the AC on. You can do it , it just takes a little more patience and a little slowing down. Enjoy your vacation!:goodvibes

I doesn't cool off in the evening--not really. Unless there is an afternoon thunderstorm it won't drop out of the 80's until about 3 am. Make sure your child is wearing lots of sunscreen, cool clothes, gets wet at any opportunity, drinks plenty of fluids, has a stroller fan, etc. Pack some frozen wash cloths in a ziploc bag and wipe faces and hands as needed (everyone!). Take a small soft sided cooler with frozen water bottles to keep the frozen cloths cooler. Do the inside shows in the afternoon/early evening before it gets dark. Get a really good sunshade for the stroller--a big one. Take a towel with you and wet it in the sink to hang over the stroller sunshade if your little one is napping. It will reflect the sun and cool off the stroller. And make sure to sunscreen the little feet--they often stick out of the stroller and I've seen sooo many beet red feet that got missed.

We took our little one in early August when she was about 8 months old. The doctor had us add an extra ounce of water to each bottle for extra fluids. We followed his advice and all the other suggestions above and we all had a blast! We went in December for her first birthday and she even recognized the Disney buses when we drove in--shouted 'Key' from her carseat! And the doctor said it was a waste of time to take her so young.....

The idea about taking frozen water bottles along is a really good one.

We live in the desert, where it gets to be 120 degrees in August. I've started leaving a sippy cup filled with ice in DD's carseat when we go to the store. That way, her seat has a nice cold spot when I put her back in. Plus she has cool water to drink. Frozen water bottles would work even better!

We tend to keep DD sockless, as well.

We actually bought the CLIP ON stroller fans - this one
http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=5945&cmSource=Search

We had a double stoller so I bought 2- would put the cover down- turn on the fans and it was like a little air conditioner in there.

I also would pack a washcloth in a bunch of ice(ziploc) and take that out to cool him off if we were waiting in lines(no stroller)

Plenty of fluids and he was fine. We were there in JULY! Super HOT. The 2 in the stroller were the ones that were comfortable!

Wanted to add that when were in Disney we were stopped by several "disney suits" showing interest in the fans and last year I saw they had COPIED THEM! With a disney "theme" that they sell at the parks. (mickey shaped I don't know how they work as I didn't use them but they were cute)

I'm buying those fans again this year. (ours are 2 years old and now I can't find them!!)

Push fluids starting a week before you leave. Get her really hydrated so that she won't feel sick.

Let her play in the dancing fountains. When my boys were little we always brought a change of clothes in case they wanted to get out of the wet ones. They LOVED the fountains and they cooled them down.:wizard:

We're from MA and we always go in August and we're not really effected by the heat. Granted our temps aren't in the 100s, but I think by August our bodies are use to it also.

I agree with the fluids and the frozen water - you can never get too much water in those conditions!! Frequent breaks are a must - check your map to schedule in some A/C time - Hall of Presidents - Mk, Muppets 3D-Studios, etc. Or go back to your room around noon for a nap/dip in the pool and then go back to the park in the late afternoon when the sun isn't so strong.

In another post I read someone brought a white cotton flat sheet for their stroller so it wouldn't be so hot when they came out of attractions. Sounded good.

The fans are a MUST - check WalMart, ToysRUs or BabysRus for a stroller fan - REMEMBER THE EXTRA BATTERIES!!! My friend's DD3 has spinabifida (very prone to overheating because of the medication) and she didn't bring batteries so when the fan ran out her DD3 overheated and that was in April!! She ended up buying a Mickey fan - hello it was $25!! WalMart - $5

Cool white face cloths in ziploc bags are good too - don't forget to cool down the wipes! The biggest thing I see is parents who over dress their young ones - this isn't a fashion show it's Disney and it's DA** HOT! Put a oneies on and be done with it!!
