Concerned About Gas Shortage In Oct!!

We are not running out of gas! Read the news people. 23 countries are releasing 60 million barrels of oil and gas to us and Bush released another 30 million from the federal reserve. We had plenty of gas to begin with. THe only problem was GETTING it to the gas stations.

Well thanks for the enlightenment, but maybe you should slow down there Trigger. Actually we are running out of fuel. Anytime you have to go into the oil reserves you are running out of fuel. If we were on a plateu we would not be reaching into the reserves. Just FYI, since none of us watch the news, the oil reserves were not means for sitautions like this, so to have to use them, really shows we are running out.

If those other countires were releasing enough barrells to supply us fully, we wouldnt be going to the reserves.

Even with buying it from more counties, we are still short. We buy millions of barrells from overseas already and that still only account for around 50% of what we have. 50% of our oil production (almost that) has been cut off temporarily. So actually , we were right that we are running out.

If you use all of the money in your bank account and have to take some out in a loan, does that mean you are not running out because you can get a loan? No, you still ran out of money.

To the other poster, yes we are having oil problems becuase the Hurricane seriously damaged many of our Gulf Coast oil platforms. When they are repaired, things should get back to normal.

There IS gasoline, but there is a delivery problem. OK, fine. So what if there isn't enough jet fuel where it is needed? That could cause huge flight delays, and that always causes a ripple effect, even if delays are only in one region.

I work in the Private Business Aviation Field (aka Flying rich people around in expensive private planes). There is no jet fuel problem currently. We have gotten word from a few shorter runway airports that they are not sure when they will have fuel available. However, none of these airports are used for regular commercial travel.

I would know if there was, and in that case I would be canceling my trip to Disney this October to spend the time seaching for a new job.

Ok for one they tapped the reserves when Ivan hit last year. The issue isn't the fact that they can't get it here, its the fact that it takes time to fire up the rigs. There are hundreds of oil rigs out there, only a few were damaged. Of the 8 refineries shut down, only half made gas, one is coming back online this weekend and another is soon to follow. The plantation pipeline is back at full capacity and the colonial pipeline will be at 85% by the weekend. The government also relaxed some standards so other refineries can make more gas since its faster to make them without the summer mix.

And by the way, the gulf isn't 50%, its actually only 25% and right now with what's back up and running, we're only down by 10-12% capacity.

By the way, prices are coming down in our area. They went from 3.09 this morning down to 2.89 and some even 2.79. Georgia's Governor also eliminated the gas tax for the rest of this month, do you think he would actually lower gas if there were a shortage? So gas in Georgia will automatically drop by 15 cents tomorrow.

Really? You may want to write CNN and let them know because they've said just that about 10 times today alone. 50% was their number, as well as Fox News.

Listen again...50% comes in, no produced. The tankers just divert to other ports. They released all this reserves during Ivan last year...anytime you have to shut something down it will cause a disruption.

Stop panicing, prices are going down...why would they go down in a shortage? The pipes are back at capacity and the remaining refineries are picking up the slack.

ok, makes sense. However, maybe here in SW Florida we'll stop panicking when they start going down because all we're seeing are gas stations with no gas and RISING prices.

While I don't think it will last, we are currently having a problem in Orlando. Many stations are out of gas. I went this morning to the Hess station across from DTD and waited in line for 10 minutes. My sister tried to get gas this afternoon along Highway 50. She said the lines were about 30 cars deep at Sam's Club. I really think it is an over reaction. This happened last year following Charley, but only lasted a couple of days. I hope that is true this time. I paid $2.89 a gallon.

Ten minute wait? In my hometown, which was hit hard by Katrina, people are waiting 4.5 hours. There were only two stations with gas.

Like others, I think this is largely caused by overreaction. I think a lot of people failed to fuel up before the storm, and stations' regular shipments were delayed. Couple that with a slowdown in the pipeline due to Katrina and the media reporting these stories, and you get mass hysteria. Now that being said, when I came to my m-i-l's in Alabama for the Labor Day weekend, I brought 4 5-gallon containers to buy fuel here and take back to Hattiesburg.

I posted earlier about this problem being driven more by the public than an actual problem. Another poster asked the question about jet fuel. We also haul jet fuel to the military bases around our area. We haul to Ft. Rucker in lower Alabama and they have ordered more than the norm because of helicopters helping in the clean up. We have had no problem getting jet fuel for them. We are having problem although with getting trucks from point A to point B. Like the other poster said there is gas at the terminals it is just taking 2 and 3 times the amount of time to get it to the stations. Up here we have trucks from all over getting gas for other areas making our wait much longer. Then on top of that we are having to call the police in to clear out the parking lots to get the trucks in. It took six hours yesterday for us to get one truck loaded in Mobile. Gas prices did drop yesterday for the actual store owners to purchase but it may take a few days for the public to see that at the pumps. We are going at the end of this month and I hope everything is back to normal by then. My concern is when prices do go down for the actual store that they won't pass all the savings down to us, because they know we will pay the higher price now. The man that owns our company also owns a few stores himself and he advises staying at home over the weekend and wait to see what the prices do the first of the week.

Local weather people in Tampa said tonight that we can expect 2 to 4 major hurricanes (Cat 3 and above) for the balance of season thru November. If any of these storms come in to Gulf of Mexico causing more damage to our fuel producing facilities, gas rationing will surely become mandatory for a very long time.

From what I have heard on the news and on cnn etc. that there is no shortage. The prices are rising and people are just over reacting due to hurricanes etc. I don't think there will be any problems in oct and I think everything will settle down in the following weeks. I am also in south florida and I haven't experienced any stations without gas in my immediate area all though the prices are crazy.
There may or may not be a shortage but it is a fact that our stations here in FL are running out of gas. Why, it really doesn't matter. Some say shortage, some say hoarders.... either way there are many stations without gas & when you ask at the stations when they will get it, they don't know... If you are lucky to find it, there is a long line. Anyone traveling to FL this weekend... good luck with your gas. Even our school districts are running low on fuel...and that has nothing to do with the general public hoarding it... it is because the tankers aren't getting it to us.... I guess you can say that there isn't a shortage, just no deliveries :sad2:
opps forgot to ask what part of FL are you from..... I am in Lee county & today I passed 8 stations... 3 of them had gas, 2 of them had very long lines.. As far as the counties that are running short for the schools.. Bush said there were 11 of them. I know of: Lee, Collier, DeSoto, Flagler, I think Valousia & Osceola. I don't know which others... Many of them have or are going to stop the after school activities bus to save on what they have left. If my county doesn't get a delivery by Tuesday, they may not have enough to finish the week...that is what was said today, yesterday they said we had enough to last 10 days.....

Yes we have plenty of gas, but most of it is crued...we have to have it refined..and that is what was damaged...the refinerys....we can have all the gas in the world but it would still need to be refined. Then on top of that, there is the problem of getting it to the stations...
So we really do have a double problem...yes, we have plenty of gas...
~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the 80's a barrel went for $90, yesterday they were going for $70...but yet in the 80's gas was under a dollar :confused3 to me, there seems to be another problem with the math there....
and yes I can remember the 70's, we had to get gas on the odd or even day... I wonder if that will come next....then it was like 55 cents a gallon..and that was expensive
Price's aren't going down here!!! :confused3 If you were lucky to find it today, it had gone up from yesterday... The only pumps around here that haven't gone up are the ones that ran dry. They still have the old price on the marque. Some of them have just resorted to putting up 0.00
ditto ditto ditto... lovely paradise in SW FL...if something isn't done soon here our snow birds will come & take what ever we have left so they can get to the beach & we will not be able to get to work... :rotfl: I am reading all these posts and thinking what is wrong with were we live??? At least I am not the only one seeing here. I know some posts have been made about the Orlando area running dry...I don't care what someone wants to call it...shortage, non-delivery what ever...bottom line is we here in SW FL are running out, not getting it & there hasn't been a drop...welcome to our lovely part of the state. My husband works in the next county (Collier). He told them if he runs out of gas & cannot find a station, he will not be able to come in. We have 3 cars that we filled. Between the 2 of us working, we hope that something will break by next week so he can still get there. If worse came to worse, I would give him my car & I will not go.... :crazy: This entire thing is crazy & I am not blaming it all on Katrina... why were they going up before it hit?? Why have they been going up for months.... :confused3
Just a minor observation--I still see folks up here on I-83 driving their normal 75-80 MPH. Just slowing down to 60-65 would save untold gallons of gas nationwide.
THink we'll be able to do something that simple??? :rotfl2: :rotfl2:
That is so true. They said on the news that the most efficient speed for cars is 55 mph. If you drive 55 whenever possible, you will save a lot of gas.
I live on the other side of FL (SE FL) and we are not having a problem with shortage. On the way to and from work everyday I see 8 gas stations. Except for the Tuesday and Wednesday being busier than normal(especially Tuesday because the news announced prices going up by 50 cents a gallon) we have had plenty of gas. I was able to get gas Wednesday(paid $2.74 a gallon). I don't understand why people on the West coast of Fl are not getting the gas we are.
I've seen a price decrease of 10 cents a gallon in the past 2 days. I work nights since there is no traffic I look at the gas stations to see whats going on. I haven't seen any that had bags or yellow tape around the pumps (how they show you they are out).
We leave next Saturday and I'll be using about 18 gallons of gas to and from. Was going to rent an Explorer to be more comfortable for the drive but not with it being a gas guzzler and gas prices. We plan on only using Disney Busses. :flower:
I honestly can not believe how this is getting out of control. There isn't a shortage of gas. The media is just portraying it like there is. That way the public will panic and go out and buy gas. That is the only reason why stations are running out of gas. Not because of the hurricane or a shortage. Because people are panicing.
AMEN!
Oh how true. People up here are whining and moaning about the rise in gas prices. Yet go out and see how people are driving? Speeding and rushing...to go where??? My drive to work is along a main city road with several stop lights along the way. Each day I am amazed at how someone will fly by me(oh and nevermind that we pass three school areas) only to be waiting at the next red light for me to pull up along side. The light turns green and vvrrroooomm off to the next red light where I again pull up alongside. This happens every single day. Actually had this happen where by coincidence a woman ended up in the same plaza where I work. I thought, "Congratulations, you beat me here by 25 seconds while probably consuming 50% more fuel and endangering others with your wreckless driving (weaving in and out and speeding)!"
As for what the news reports...yeah they clearly have our best interests at heart! :rolleyes:
my husband works at autozone and said this week has been a nightmare. people fighting over gas containers and gas locks for their car. people are already stealing gas out of peoples cars. so he will be getting us 2 when ever they get in cause they are selling out fast. people are in a panic and it seems history is repeating its self. hope something good will happen soon so everyone can calm down again and we can look forward to our very much earned vacation.
This is ridiculous! We're south of Atlanta and gas is ~$3.10 a gallon here for regular. I read about Gov. Barnes lifting the tax on gasolne till the end of the month, well I haven't seen a reflection in the price yet!
