Pardon the rant, but I have to let off some steam.
I'm getting so sick of all the problems constantly cropping up on my computer- this laptop is brand new! I shouldn't be complaining at all! Not being able to do simple things like opening 'My Computer' and constantly having the number of tabs/windows I can have open at one time while using the internet restricted is just ridiculous, and there's always something new and annoying going wrong.
Right now I can't use the right-click button in Internet Explorer, which also sucks but at least is compatible with Vista. (The superior Mozilla Firefox, I've been told, doesn't have a compatible version yet and will probably send the computer into it's death throes. Or maybe that's just Microsoft propoganda. I'm afraid to download anything as well because 'they say' that it just might make the computer slow to a final standstill and/or delete/corrupt all my files.) I'm trying to get the URL from a picture to put it into my Photobucket and can't do it for no apparent reason at all. I'm not doing anything wrong to the computer, but this horrible OS is a piece of crap that has caused nothing but trouble and practicaly rendered the whole computer worthless.
Back in 1998, my dad got a new laptop from his school that, while pretty good for the time, is antiquated by today's standards. And yet we never had any problems with it at all beyond the normal issues computers have. Windows '98 never caused any serious problems and worked fine. Still does, actually. Our older upstairs computer (born circa '97 or '98) has it currently and when it was new never did crap like the brand-new 2007 computer I'm typing on now does. No one ever had to spend seven hours on the phone with a customer service rep in India who walked them step by step through a process that would reset the computer to factory-condition- as in, delete every single program, file, and saved preference/password/everything else on the computer because that was the only way to save it. And the worst thing is that neither Microsoft nor the store we bought it at gives a damn what happens to us as long as they have our money and can continue to give us the runaround while trying to squeeze even more money out of us. They don't care at all. The richest company in the world is hardly the most helpful. I've been to their 'help' website numerous times and it sucks as much as you would expect from something brought to you by Microsoft.
Another horrendous aspect of Vista is that there is no longer a help feature ANYWHERE. If you install a program (one that doesn't crash your computer) and it has a Help feature that you can bring up and read, it won't work at all. Microsoft has disabled the program that can read help files because it, and I quote, "hadn't undergone any upgrades for some time and wasn't up to their standards of quality". Lawl. Like MS Paint, maybe? The program that functions exactly the same way it did ten years ago? Or maybe Paint being disabled wouldn't cause enough frustration to the average user. Although personally I'd be pretty steamed if they got rid of it, since being unable to download GIMP has left me with no choice but to use it for everything that involves images. (And I'd just started to get the hang of the GIMP, too.)
But the real reason they disabled the help feature, I think, was to further strengthen their message of 'No old software, period", which is never actually said anywhere but basically what Vista is all about. I can't use our collection of games and educational software because Microsoft won't have it- they'd rather I buy a whole freaking new collection at fifty dollars per program, at least. HAH. Good luck trying, jerks.
So... I guess that's all I wanted to say. Well, not really, but I'm tired of typing. And if this sounds kinda ignorant, that's probably 'cause it is. I honestly have no idea about Microsoft's 'official' policies and what people think about them, and am only basing this on my own experience, because I really feel like this evil excuse for a software company screwed me out of what was supposed to be an awesome opportunity- finally getting a new computer of my own.
Has anyone else experienced any similar computer issues? And if you have any advice, I'm all ears.
