Hi Bambii,
The cord connecting the speakers together is designed to provide enough length to place the speakers each side of the monitor/PC, which is regarded as the usual place for them.
However, if you want to move the speakers away from the PC (assuming that they have a separate power source), you could buy a 3.5mm jack 'headphone' extension lead. This consists of a cord with a plug on one end (for the sound card socket) and a socket on the other end (for the speaker jack plug).
The alternatives are:
1. Buy a 3.5mm jack plug to phono (Red and white) cord and connect the soundcard output to a hifi system.
2. Buy a more expensive PC speaker system that allows you to connect and confugure you speakers to your own needs.
3.1 To widen the space between your speakers, insert an additional length of cord to the existing - this of course is the most risky solution because it's going to involve cutting the cord, soldering and insulating.
3.2 A safer method would be to buy 2 x 3.5mm jack plugs and 2 x 3.5mm jack sockets, cut the cord connecting the speakers together and solder the plugs and sockets onto the cut cord and the inserted cord i.e.
* cord from 1st speaker (the one with the power input) - socket
* one end of insert cord - plug
* other end of insert cord - socket
* remaining cord to 2nd speaker plug.
This way, the inserted cord can be added and removed as required.
I hope this helps a litttle and hasn't just confused the issue.
Good luck.
