I replaced my son's hard drive and was able to format it. Now, when I try to connect to our wireless network, I get the error "wireless network connection doesn't have a valid ip address". What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Thanks!

Anybody? I've been trying to fix DS's computer for 4 days now. Finally gave up on recovering the hard drive and now this.....:sad1:

I am about to change a hard drive so I will be curious to hear the answers.
I found this http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...-a-valid/0d539fa8-4a62-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5

I recently was able to take a hardrive out of an old laptop and recover my data. Found a really helpful link on youtube for that one, just had to buy a $30 adapter and was able to attach the harddrive to this laptop and save all of my old pictures.
Good luck, I feel your pain

DH says you have to go to the network settings which should be under settings on the control panel and enable the little box that allows the ip address to be assigned by the DNS server.

That's going to prove difficult to troubleshoot over a message board, but do you have any machines that will get "online" using the wireless network?

If so, we can use the settings from one of those to assign a valid IP to the broken one.

Your wireless connection is probably passworded. When you wiped the hard drive, it naturally deleted the password. You have to go into your wireless network connection and reenter the password under WPA or WEP. Verizon, walked me through it on the phone. So I can't give you more directions than that.

You might want to PM Firedancer to see if he can help.

UGH! It recommended this....

You may also follow these steps and check if it helps.

a. Click on Start button.

b. Type ‘cmd’ in the Start Search box and press enter.

c. Right click on the “cmd” and run as administrator.

d. Type the following commands and press Enter.

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

e. Close the command prompt.

So I did the first command to "release" and when I did the second to renew, it says "No operation can be performed on Wireless Network Connection while it has its media disconnected. What now?

Yeah, I have one of those cables and have used it to save data quite a few times. Unfortunately, the old drive won't even show up using that. It is pretty much dead.

I don't see this on Windows 7. When I go to Control Panel and choose Network and Internet, the choices >View network status and tasks >connect to a network >view network computers and devices and >add a wireless device to the computer. I have tried all these and don't see anything about the IP address.

Yes, this laptop is online using the wireless network.

Any help would be appreciated. I am not totally computer ignorant and this is driving me crazy!

How would I get to where I can put in/change the information for my wireless router? It is recognizing my connection by name, but isn't working.

And how do I fix the problem I now have in red above?

So, I called Toshiba and they told me to call Road Runner. The guy there said it wasn't a problem on their end, but he tried a few things(messed with network adapters, etc) He then told me to call Toshiba back. The guy there tried some things and then said it was not a problem on their end:confused3 and to call Road Runner back to have them reconfigure the router. I don't think that would help, because my other wireless computer(this one) works fine.

More info that might be relevant. I formatted the new hard drive with a copy of Windows 7 from someone at church. It asked for the windows key, which is smeared on my computer. I walked away and when I came back, it was on the default desktop and everything was working(except the wireless) Internet works when the ethernet cord is plugged in. The Toshiba guy said I might need to buy recovery CDs, but I don't want to spend $30 and wait 4-5 days if I can help it.

I have a Toshiba too, I did not find their tech support very helpful. I had a problem last week with my laptop, it is less than a year old, the power input jack was failing. After some online research I found out this was a very common problem and I ended up soldering the wires myself and put and heat shrink wrapped the wire.

Anyway, I did some online searching for your problem. Here is a link
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/29805-42-operation-performed-error-ipconfig

Towards the end of the post the problem is solved. Seems like you might have to reconfigure. I wish a real IT person would see this. I find all my answers searching the web not always easy or helpful, trial and error and lots of frustration .

Here is another link seems more helpful http://www.techsupportforum.com/for...-disconnected-message-in-ipconfig-220641.html

I don't see why you need to buy a recovery disk, that is what he told you to get you off the phone. I was probably talking to the same guy last week.

I don't know if you fixed this yet but the error you are receiving means that the drivers aren't installed for your wireless network card. Since you recently reformatted this further validates this.

If you have the recovery disk that came with the computer or if you have access to the internet from another computer (which I think you do since you posted this), go to the computer manufacturer's website and download the wireless network card drivers. Put them on a USB thumb drive and install them on your other computer. This will fix your problem.

THANK YOU!:woohoo: I have been working on this for 2 days and you just fixed it in 2minutes:love:

So,why in the world did the people at Toshiba or TWC not know to do that? :confused3 And why doesn't the stupid error message say "wireless network drivers need to be updated"?

I'll have to write that "fix" down in my little computer notebook for future reference.

THANKS AGAIN!:goodvibes

Glad it worked? To answer your question about the Toshiba support or any other support for that matter. The ones you get on the phone don't know anything. If the answer doesn't appear on their screen when they type the problem in, they can't fix it. They will offer solutions to get you off the phone.

To further answer your questions... Computers are stupid. They don't see the network so card so they default to saying that the media is disconnected. That's just another way of saying the network cable in unplugged
