Okay - I have now gotten all my pictures off my hard drive and still can't get the virus gone. I am ready to reformat - but from what I understand I need to use the recovery wizard ON the computer and when I try the virus nabs everything and shuts down. Is it complete toast - or is there any hope at all? I have a Sony VAIO if that helps.

do you have all the other info, like passwords and bookmarks and email addies and emails?

make sure you have all the system discs before starting. You need the operating system disc, drivers for your particular hardware, and any programs that came with originally.

then once you are completely ready you reformat the hard drive. choose the long version.

but there can be bugs...

Make sure you do a full format of the drive before you do a reinstall. This will make sure to get anything hiding in the boot sector. I would download Darik's Boot and Nuke (of course using someone else's working computer) and do a full wipe of the disc and then reformat and reinstall everything. There are trojans that can hide on the boot sector outside of the OS that even restoring from scratch won't find. They are rare but it is easy to avoid and I am a better safe than sorry person. Good luck.
