I opened one of our pc's to upgrade the RAM, and one of the computer parts just kind of fell out. I cannot get it reattached because two of the tabs that connect to the board won't stay in place tight enough to hold the part.

Could someone at least tell me what the part is and is it possible to have the little holders reattached so it stays in place?

It is the square silver piece in below the CPU fan in the following link.

Or am I up a creek?

My geek son says it's part of the motherboard and to use electrical tape. But not to quote him on that.

Try flipping the piece (RAM) around and try closing it. If the clamps are still there it is fine.

Looks like it may be the processor? I would use electrical tape as suggested.

If its the silver part in the picture tht has the spikes on it, its called a heatsink. its job is to radiate heat out from whatever it is attached to, I do NOT suggest using electrical tape, as the tape will get VERY hot, and it could melt and start a fire.

My IT husband says (from his own knowledge and from this website http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=46183):

The metal piece with tines that I believe you are referring to is a heat sink. It is not integrated into the electronics on the device, however because it is used to cool it, it requires a connection that conducts heat. So electrical tape probably won't work. However it may function as a stop-gap measure until you can take it in to be looked at by a professional. If you're feeling brave, you can look into thermal adhesives. Also, don't use glue.

Please note that my husband comes with no guarantee. ;)
