Wondering if anyone has ideas of things to check/ what might be wrong. Dh's computer will not connect to internet. was Working fine last night, shut computer down THis am can't connect.

WE have Windows 7 as OS.
It is set up for wireless connection
I have tried restarting, unplugging etc.
I tried runinng High speed cord from Tower to router/modem no luck
I tried connecting wireless via verzion mifi no luck.
It appears to me that it picks up networks but can't connect no matter way.

Have you tried turning the router off and then back on?

You say you tried restarting, unplugging but wasn't sure if you meant the computer or the router.

Both, my computer on same router/modem working fine.
I have shut router off let sit turned back on.
I have unplugged computer from power supply Ie: pulled plug from back of computer tower.
I tried connecting his computer wirelessly using my verzion mifi. it picks up modem thingie but won't connect to internet.

THe computer shows signal bars in bar on bottom with yellow triangle on top of it. It shows connected to network but can't connect to internet.

Will it connect if it is hard wired? I had this problem last year. My computer would connect using a wired connection but not wireless. I ended up needing to replace the wireless modem (I think that was what it was called) that is in the computer itself.

I had the same symptoms. Worked fine and next morning nothing.

Have you run the Troubleshooting off the Network and Sharing Centre in Control Panel? What does that say?

(I'm curious because I've run into this same thing with my laptop, and it seemed to fix itself. I have no clue what happened)

NOthing more with hard wireing it but that could be me I doubt it though, only so many spots to plug into.

SAid something about firewall and try turning off, allowing things thru.

Well, I don't know how to fix it, but it sounds like a settings problem in the firewall. It won't connect because it's been instructed not to connect in that way.

Are you by any chance running two different firewall programs? Maybe one is interfering with the other.

Maybe go to the online help centre for your firewall program (on a different computer, natch!) and poke around troubleshooting solutions there.

So, I had this happen to me just a few days ago. Was working, 5 min later not working. I tried all the reboot stuff, didn't help. I HATE calling at&t (we have dsl) but had to. They ended up having me put in a new password for my modem. Said there was an authentication issue. It was an issue on their end that I couldn't have fixed otherwise. You may want to call your internet provider if you have no other choice. Good luck!

This can't be the issue since other computers can connect to the net through the same router & modem.

OP, what firewall are you using? If one on the computer, try turning it off just to see if you can connect. I know ZoneAlarm had a "lock internet" that shut down all internet capability.

Have you tried multiple browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome) on the problem machine? Do they all fail? In the settings for whatever browser should be something for 'connection'. Check the Proxy settings too. Compare the setting to the working machine.

Thanks for that suggestion but.
1. I'm on same Router/network and running fine.
2. I tried another internet thing ( my verizion mifi) and it is doing same thing.
AS for firewall issue Using firewall from virus scan program and went as far as turning it off and still nothing, plus worked fine last night with settings today nope.
I am leaning towards something internal in computer.

Make sure that Windows Firewall isn't causing trouble. I seem to remember that there are issues with interference between McAfee and Windows Firewall.

(Go in to Security Centre under Control Panel to check on what Windows Firewall is up to)

I am having the same issue with my Windows 7 desktop. Laptop with Windows Vista worked fine. IPhone works fine. I called Verizon yesterday and the issue is with a Microsoft update, they have had other calls. They had me do a system restore to take it back before the update. Internet then worked fine. When I shutdown last night, it loaded the update again. Same problem. Did a system restore again and it's working now. Not sure what to do.

Go to Start, then type System Restore. Pick the latest update and let it run. See if it solves your problem, at least temporarily.

Using mcaffee firewall that is part of virus scan software, I tried turning it off still nothing.
AS for broswers using IE 8 and don't think there is any others on computer
I will check.

Thanks already tried that. IT says mcaffee is covering firewall dept.

This is a little more advanced, but what I would check on a computer...

From the 'Start' button/Windows button, where you can type in what to run... type 'cmd' (no quotes). You should get a list that has 'Command Prompt'. Run that. You should get a black window with white text.

Type the following: ipconfig /all
Hit Enter.
You should get a list of settings.
Look for:
IP Address. Should be in the form of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Default Gateway (same form above)
DNS Servers (should be two of them listed).

Now type the following: ping <insert default gateway numbers>
Hopefully you get something like:
Reply from <IP>: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64 (repeated 4 times).
If you get "Request Timed Out", that means your computer isn't connecting to to router/modem.

Assuming you get the result that has bytes & time, do the following:
Ping <IP of the DNS server.>
I'm guessing it will fail at this point.

Thanks will try this.
did system restore and it works now. Guessing something in an update that went thru.
Thank you all for suggestions and help. Windows is doing updates on my laptop ( not affected computer) now so we shall see what I get after those r done.

laptop seems ok after updates.

Our ISP support service was working on my laptop most of last evening into the wee hours of the morning. Same problem as you. This morning we checked in with them and they said it's a massive Windows issue and that everyone's reporting problems. Microsoft is reportedly working feverishly to fix it!

Thanks for the update, let us know if you hear anything more. My shutdown button has the update symbol on it but I don't want to run it again until I know the problem is fixed.

Is it Windows 7? My Windows Vista laptop is fine.
