First, please excuse my non-technical lingo...I'm not very computer smart.

When I'm watching something on YouTube, it stops every 3 seconds to load then keeps playing. It didn't used to do this :confused3 Is there a setting somewhere, where I can have it load the whole video before playing it...so there arent this many interruptions??

Thanks!!

The video is caching. You can pause it for a bit to allow the cache to build up and play without stopping. If it didn't use to do this a couple of things could be causing the issue:

  • Other people are using your connection concurrently. If someone else in the house is sharing the Internet connection and are doing something bandwidth intensive it could be causing a delay. If you have an unprotected WiFi hotspot (you don't enter a password) a neighbor could be leaching off of your spot
  • If you are on a Cable connection you are basically sharing a pool of bandwidth with your neighbors. If they are using a larger then normal amount of it your connection can be slower then usual
  • Your computer could be running too many processes for the web browser to fully use it's cache. Try restarting the computer.
  • Your ISP could be doing some hardware maintenance that is causing a bottleneck somewhere up stream
  • You normally watch YouTube content in standard definition and this video is in high definition. The file is larger and you may notice it takes longer to cache the same amount of time because the bitrate (size of the file necessary to play the same duration of time) is higher.

Ahhhh - I bet that's it!!! DS got a netbook for Christmas...I bet he's hogging my connection. :surfweb: YouTube is the only place I've noticed the difference, my speed seems OK otherwise. We do have a password, so I dont think the neighbors are using it.

Thank You so much! I was afraid something was going wrong.

If it helps, I tend to notice Youtube being a lot slower in the evenings when more more people are at home and using their computers than during the day when most people are at work. I usually just pause a video and wait for it to fully load then watch it, it usually doesn't take too long at all.
