I found an old computer game that I played on our first computer and I'd like to play it again. The problem is that it runs on DOS and I played it back when I had Windows 3.1. Now that I have Windows XP, how to I play this game on DOS, and if I try am I going to screw up my computer?

Can you not find a newer version of the game that will work on XP? My computer is so flaky that it would probably explode if I tried to do that.

Sorry that I can't really help you with your question. But I just wanted to throw that option out at you.

The easiest thing to do would probably be to search on the Internet for a newer, free version. There's probably one out there.

However, you may be able to install it. I've never installed a DOS game on XP, but I've done it on 95 and other versions of Windows. You can still access a DOS window if you need to. Do you remember the commands to install it and run it?

I would suggest you contact the game companys site for a newer version or their reccommendation. I coulkd reserch to see if it could be done, WIN2000 had problems with some DOS Games.

DOS games will still run on XP not as good and reliable but they can run, you can get to the dos prompt in XP by going to the run menu or hitting CTRL + R then typing in CMD and hit enter

LarryE is right as to how to run it. Another reason it may not run as well is the way Windows 3.1 and Windows XP handle running programs.

Your game may run, but it may run so fast that it is unplayable. I also suggest looking for a newer version. What game was it?

It should run OK. All windows can run most DOS program. What's the name of the game, and maybe you can search online to see if others have problems.

The game is Companions of Xanth, based on the series by Piers Anthony. I bought it from the online store that sold his books, but I don't think it's around anymore. I'll have to do a search.

I'm not about to pay another $70 for the game, I was just hoping I could play the old one somehow on my computer.
