Hi all, I had a nice visit with the Geek Squad today about my laptop. Currently, I am in the process of purchasing new security software and was wondering if anyone on this board had a recommendation. All they recommended at the store was Kaspersky. I have no knowledge about this one. Anyone know about it? If so, what are the positives and negatives of it?

What is a good anti virus/security software?

Thanks.

We bought the Kaspersky virus protection when we bought a new laptop. I've been happy with it - no issues at all (knock on wood!).

I have used AVG Antivirus Free Edition for 7 years and never had a problem. It updates daily, and has caught several virus/malware problems on our PC before they got out of hand. I have also used it to clean up friends PC's as well, and it was great there also. I even replaced Norton on my parents PC with it, and it found stuff that Norton didn't catch. Plus it doesn't bog their PC down like Norton did.

I would be willing to pay something for it, but it's totally FREE!

Another vote for avg. I use the free one at home and have never had an issue with it. So good we pay for it on the work machines

I was a big user of the AVG free until it missed a nasty trojan last week that constantly redirected my browser searches to other websites. Nothing could stop it.

Ended up re-loading my operating system to get rid of it, and now run Norton 360.

Another vote here for Norton 360. :thumbsup2 AVG is great to have but Norton 360 has never let me down. Best price I got for it was over on Amazon.com.

Another great free one is Avast! I've been using it awhile and it works great. Caught many things that Symantec let through.

For personal Window users (corporate users have a unique set of rules not worth discussing here) you are a fool to pay money for anti-virus, web security, anti-malware, etc.

For anti-virus, the top free options all perform just as well, and at times better, than paid options. AVG, Avast, and Microsoft Security Essentials are the most recommended. Any of those is fine, I prefer Microsoft's solution as it doesn't require yearly registration and is extremely light in system resources. (It doesn't try to do too much, wasting your computer's memory or constantly annoying you with status reports)

For internet security and anti-malware, you start to run into questions of how much protection do you really need. If you never visit a website of questionable nature and do not blindly click on links sent to you by IM, facebook, etc. you probably can use the above mentioned 3 options.

Internet security and anti-malware are just OK with the free options mentioned. There are better choices, but really if you need more protection than the top anti-virus options provide you are going to get burned anyway and should just invest in an external hard drive and back up your data daily.

If you are determined to pay money for improved security, upgrade to Windows 7. Having Windows 7 plus a free anti-virus solution should be all the protection you need. If you are getting infected with something after that, I am quite confident in saying you probably blindly clicked on something and brought the infection upon yourself. Sometimes tough love is the best love.

You know, you can make you point just fine without the 'name calling'. :sad2:

Well, he is right... and it really wasn't name calling.

1) I don't trust the Geek Squad with my system. I have known people who have worked for it and someone with little to no knowledge can be hired. They will also suggest something that will cost you money and make them money.

2) There is NO reason in the world to pay for virus protection. AVG or Avast do a much better job then any of the pay for products. I personally use Avast but have heard good things about AVG.

BTW, I am the girlfriend of a programmer and friends with many a computer geek. I do online gaming and have a top end system. I build my own systems. No one in the group of gamers, programmers, or builders that I know would allow Norton or Mcafee to touch their systems.
