complimentary upgrades?

i am leaving feb 2 for a week in animal kingdom lodge, i orginally booked a savannah room for the view but was told and read countless times to book cheaper and ask for a complimentary upgrade as it is off season. i did downgrade and plan to ask to be upgraded but i am sort of freaking out. what are the chances there will be nothing available?

I am not sure about a comped upgrade, but if they won't do that, I am sure you can pay the difference in cost to get the Savannah room. Even if they don't comp it, you will still only be paying what you would have if you had booked it originally. I think it's worth the chance. I would try for the comped upgrade. I bet the availiblity will be there since it is a slow time to visit!!! Good luck, and have fun!!!

It never hurts to ask at checkin, but you can't count on an upgrade. Sometimes it depends on availability (obviously if the upgraded room type you want is completely booked, you're going to be out of luck) but it also to the whim of the person you get at checkin. Some CMs will look and help you out, others won't even bother looking. This happened on my last trip to CBR - I was curious if I could get a king bed room (we had booked standard) and it would have been nice to get, but I really didn't care either way. I asked at checkin if any king bed rooms were available and the CM didn't even look anything up and just said no. He did upgrade me to a preferred location room though (although I don't think that was his doing, I have a feeling that was the room that was already assigned to us since after I asked about the king bed room he had our room keys immediately after - if you get upgraded from your pre-assigned room it usually takes them a few minutes to look up availability and make any changes - sometimes you do get lucky and get a complimentary upgrade by the room assigners without asking) Rule of thumb usually is if there is a certain type room you want and will be upset if you don't get it, book it from the start. If it's more of a wish and not something that will make or break your trip it's a nice surprise if you get it, but there is no guarentee you will ever be upgraded.

Well we received a complementary upgrade from pool to savannah during Christmas week! So I would say it is very possible, but of course, don't be too disappointed if it doesn't happen. There are plenty viewing spots all over AKL!

We have stayed at the AKL 3 times and booked savannah view once and standard twice. The two times we had standard view booked, we were upgraded upon check-in at no added cost.

Do you just say "are there any upgrades available" or should you ask for the specific upgrade of your choice???

Back over the 4th of July we were offered an upgrade from standard to savannah for $11/night. I hear this is one of the easiest/cheapest upgrades to get. If you're going during off season I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That being said, if you have your heart set on a savannah room and your whole trip will be ruined if you don't get it, save yourself the heartache and just book it from the start.
