Complimentary mosquito repellent

Haven't seem this posted yet- story on CNN today talking about how the Orlando theme parks, including Disney, will be offering free mosquito repellent to guests in addition to stepping up their current environmental program.

I now see that Disney is offering complimentary bug spray to help deal with the Zika issue.

I can only imagine the smell of the parks now with so many people covered in DEET all in such close proximity to one another lol

That said, I'm not how helpful that will be... I come from an area that has an over abundance of mosquitoes (but no Zika, we are too far north) and even with DEET filled mosquito repellents, there's always a few mosquitoes that simply don't give a damn about your attempted defenses and will bite you anyways. Going while pregnancy (or could possibly get pregnant in the near future) still seems very risky even with the free bug spray at your side.

And for the rest of the population who is is not at risk (not pregnant and not likely to become pregnant in the immediate months following), this tactic feels a little bit like fear mongering. Is the Zika virus really that much of a concern? From everything I have read, most people who contract Zika don't show symptoms and those that do typically only have minor ones. But this approach of having bug spray stations everywhere seems as though it could spread the wrong idea about how worrisome the virus really is.

Essentially making this strategy not enough for the people who require it most and perhaps scaring off others who shouldn't be concerned at all.....

I just posted about this. Sorry, I didn't see that you posted first! I started mine while ago but my kids kept interrupting me so it took forever before I finished. I should have checked if anyone else posted in that time. Sorry.

I think concern is in what it can do to babies.
So they don't want people taking the virus home and getting bit by a mosquito and then that mosquito spreading and so forth.
Then suddenly every baby is at risk.

It is going to spread. They just want it to spread slowly in hopes of some type of treatment sooner than later.

Just one man's opinion.

It was explained to me that this is something being pushed by the state government to try to combat the idea that people shouldn't come to Florida for tourism because of Zika virus. I don't think a whole lot of local people are that concerned about it, but the state doesn't want it to impact tourism because that's such a major industry.

Is Zika really this big of a deal? Like others have said, I have heard that many people aren't at risk and that the whole matter is blown way out of proportion.

Its just a precaution. All orlando theme parks are doing it. My guess is it was recommended by the state level.

Please be aware that, even if zika has mild symptoms (in non pregnant women - the effects on unborn children are documented) you may get flu like symptoms BUT your immunity is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced if you have zika, thus putting you at much higher risk of other illnesses / bacteria / viruses etc.

(my husband has been warned of this, by his oncologist as he has leukaemia and is immunocompromised - even though we are done with having children, we will be taking precautions, because, we KNOW the reduced immunity could be a problem - plus other mosquito bourn illnesses - if people don't know they are immune-compromised, zika could be a really big deal)

There was a very short piece on the local news here in orlando last week about a study looking to see what it actually does in other people and they mentioned there was some interesting brain activity for someone on it. The scary thing to be about this is how little is currently known about it.

It is already having an impact. In the UK travel insurance is already paying out for cancellations for people pregnant or looking to get pregnant

BA and Virgin are allowing free reschedule to other destinations, Disney resorts allowing postponements. Think a lot of Brits come this time of year so it will have an impact on attendances

Yes, this is true too. We only know this because the oncologist has been fielding lots of travel information requests, and they have discovered this. We were also told that it was worth protecting against getting bitten anyway a) for other things and b) because so little is known about zika at the moment.

More info about potential effects of ZIKA on adults (not just pregnant or could be pregnant women and unborn children)

it really doesn't take long out of your day to apply an appropriate insect repellant.

Goodness! That is much more concerning than what the information I have been presented with has portrayed. My field is in obstetrics and so obviously the bulk of what I have read has centered primarily on the hazardous effects in pregnancy.

That said, if the Zika virus is potentially responsible for mental health impairments in otherwise previously healthy adults... Maybe... Just maybe it would be in the publics best interest to initiate an avoid non-essential travel advisory to affected destinations, including Florida, as currently only pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant are being warned against travel. At least until more information becomes known about the virus.

Bug spray is great in that it does greatly reduce the likelihood of getting stung, but it doesn't come close to eliminating that risk. I've used bug spray on numerous occasions and never once have I avoided being bitten altogether. It's greatly reduced the number of bites I've received, but they still get me none-the-less.

I love Disney, but I must admit, I'm a little more concerned now about our next scheduled trip than I was previously :/

There is so much we don't know about it. Given the new information coming out all the time, I think it is better to take it seriously that not.
We have been advised to go, but to take a lot of precautions, but, our circumstances are slightly different, and it might be that there is a better plan available by the end of next year too...

We got back from our most recent Disney world trip a few days ago. When we checked in there was a bottle of mosquito repellant in the bathroom for us. We didn't even think to bring some on the trip with us. There was also several mosquito spray stations through out the park. I appreciate that Disney is taking some precautions and making it readily available. Even if the spray doesn't percent 100% of mosquito bites it's still better than nothing
