Ah, dental surgery. The painful thing many have had to go through. Root canals, extractions, cavity fillings, the whole nine yards. The worst part? You’re awake in most cases, and you end up with numb teeth from a shot they put in your gums.

Have you ever had to go through one of these? If so, what was the worst of the worst? This is the safe spot to tell all…

I guess I don't consider a cavity filling or standard tooth extraction to be "dental surgery" because a regular dentist performs this. Specialists such as an "oral surgeon" do things like wisdom teeth extractions, implants, tissue grafts, etc. while an "endodontist" does root canals, etc.

Guess it depends on what it considered "surgery." I had to get my finger stitched last year and the hospital called is surgery.

The only 'dental surgery' I've had is when I got my wisdom teeth taken out by an oral surgeon, because I didn't want to be awake for it. Ironically the teeth came out very easily and I didn't have any pain or swelling, but the valium I was prescribed beforehand combined with the anesthetic made me feel terribly ill for an entire day afterward.

I had my wisdom teeth out but it was easy-peasy. Honestly, I was in a lot of pain beforehnad with one impacted tooth - having them out felt like heaven!

I’ve had a lot of dental work. The worst I would say was removal of my impacted canine when they removed my wisdom teeth. The palate swelling and stitches knotted through my front teeth were awful. Other than that, nothing sticks out as terrible. Wisdom teeth removal, asleep. Root canal, awesome endodontist. Implant, awesome oral surgeon. The trick is to find caring doctors that want you comfortable!

Oral surgeon had to take a piece of skin from the roof of my mouth and attach it to the outside gum of a tooth where the skin was receding

I've had 3 teeth extracted (besides my wisdom teeth) to have implants placed (implants require 3 surgeries - extracting tooth, placing implant, placing abutment). One tooth extracted but not replaced. I've lost count, but at least 10 root canals. And can't tell you how many cavities filled. I now have only 3 teeth that are not crowned. And those teeth have 1 root canal and all have fillings. Not to mention I had braces (the full metal band type) when I was a kid.

Each type of procedure has had at least one of them be the "worst". That's why I ask to be knocked out whenever possible for the procedures.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot (momentarily) I also had a crown lengthening procedure.

I've had more dental work done than I care to think about. I've had wisdom teeth extracted, several root canals and crowns, and an implant. The implant was the worst to me, I think, because it's just a long process and I found the bone graph healing to be uncomfortable. Plus it's the most recent of the bunch so I guess its fresher on my mind (although it's been 4-5 years ago now). With the wisdom teeth I ended up with dry sockets which was also miserable. I didn't enjoy the root canals and crowns at the time but don't remember the process being too bad.

Ironically DH had a crown started last week, ended up in pain, now needs a root canal (scheduled next Thursday) but has an infection and is on antibiotics. There is nothing worse than a tooth ache!

I was not awake for it-fully under anesthesia in a hospital. on both sides of my upper jaw the tooth behind each of the canines was removed ALONG with the jaw bone above it. front part of the jaw pushed back and wired into the space, stitched my upper gum from one end to the other, wired my mouth shut. recovery was NOT pleasant.

I put this in the category of 'dental' b/c my health insurance at the time denied the claim saying it was dental. my maxillofacial surgeon encouraged my mom to have an attorney draft a letter contesting the denial. medical insurer buckled and ended up paying BUT when their policy documents were changed to specifically exclude this type of surgery for anyone evermore (and pretty much every health insurance company followed suit to this day).

My wisdom teeth were severely impacted so they said I had to be put to sleep for their removal. I was in a lot of pain for like 2 weeks after, it was hell. Other than that ive never had any dental work done. My two older DDs had theirs out already and my middle DD is about to have hers removed. Took my youngest DD to the orthodontist yesterday (braces) and they said hers are really impacted and will have to come out when she’s older. My family’s keeping the local oral surgeon in business lol
