Competition for the DIS?

I also just participated in this survey.
They mentioned Dis Boards.
On VMK, you can say Dis boards because someone asked them to allow it.
This is what I copied also from the survey.

For each of the following activities, please indicate if this is something you have done before in an online community like MySpace, Café Mom, DisBoards, or YouTube, would be interested in doing in an online community, or something you would not be interested in doing in an online community.

Yes, if Disney runs the site in a way that promotes open debate and is also open to criticism of its policies, procedures, direction, etc, then yes, that could be a very valuable tool for providing feedback.

Again, though, I'm not at all convinced they would run it that way.

Further, I'm a little surprised they are considering jumping into the game this late. The established sites already have plenty of pro-disney talk, and they have huge followings. It won't be easy to get people to switch.

Of course Disney could play hardball and start enforcing all of its copyrights, but that would make them look like a bully and would anger many people who have been their biggest supporters and fans.

I think Disney has the ability and resources to do a great job with something like this, but if they want to supplant the fan sites, they would have to really change the way they view things like rumors, information sharing, open discussion, etc.

Same with their podcasting. They have official podcasts, but its the fan podcasts that are the most popular.

If they ever actually move forward with this, I guess we'll find out.

I just took the survey myself. Very interesting but I think I will stick with th DIS!

Wonder what'll happen when they start getting those "There was mold in the bathroom at OKW" or " I found a dead a fly in my Brown Derby salad" or " Housekeeping broke into my room at Saratoga Springs and stole my computer" --sort of posts???

"magically" disappear:rolleyes:

Of course--if they were even allowed to appear in the first place.

Here's more--'"Stop the Brazilians"
"Kick out all the kids with Heeleys'
"I went to the Character dinner and Cinderella barely talked with my kid"
"I got food poisoning at the ABC Commissary"
"The bus at Port Orleans was full and I had to stand"
And on and on-
Disney will NEVER allow that kind of stuff and that's exactly what they will get if the new site is truly "open". And if they did allow it, people would expect "results" about their complaints We do know Disney reads these boards, but they are completely unofficial and Disney has no need to reply, respond, or defend. But an "official" website? Might be different.

Another part of the whole shinding is that CEO Bob Iger gets all gooey eyed whenever you mention the word "Internet". Within Disney it's like it's 1999 all over again and everyone is laughing at Pets.com's sock puppet ads.

Iger has spent his entire life in a broadcast network. That's how he sees the world. To him, "growth" means finding new ways to sell the same product - broadcast television, cable television, satellite television, pay-for-view...and now !!The Internet!!. He's driven with a zeal that can only be worked up by lazy people on the trail of "easy" money.

And the easiest way to do something is to copy what already exists.

You know what - I don't want to chat on a Disney controlled website, nor do I want to trade pictures of cats in fairy costumes. What I want from Disney is a website that will let me easily book the hotel I want at a good price (not the horrid "offer" system alwasy tries to book me into a suite at the Grand Floridian), I want to make dinner reservations on-line without having to sit on the phone for hours, I want a website that makes my booking my visit easy and enjoyable.

Nice to see you back on a regular basis, and with a vengence, AV. There has been more than enough fodder at Disney lately to get you going. I see your posts have gone over 3000 as of late. Please keep up the pressure , a lot of us appreciate it! :thumbsup2

Disney already reads this site, and others, so they are already aware of what is being said.

When you look at how Disney has run things like Virtual Magic Kingdom, it's very difficult to believe there will be any kind of real debate about Disney policies and corporate leadership/direction allowed on an official Disney board.

Do you really believe otherwise?

As for what is accomplished here and on other boards, if a few open-minded individuals gain some valuable information in between all of the "bickering", I don't think that's a futile effort at all.

I agree. Look at the "official guide" to Disney, Birnbaum's book. Not a bad word. Then the Unofficial Guide. Same principal here I would think.
