I was wondering how is the $300.00 Compaq laptop from Walmart. My DD9 is wanting a laptop for Christmas. I don't want to spend alot on one. I thought I might get her one this weekend at the no sales tax sale.

What state are you in? I haven't heard about a no sales tax this weekend where I am. As for the laptop, I bought one last year when they had the $298 Compaq deal. This is a great laptop. I use it all the time and put accouting software for bookkeeping I do on it and it's been great. I wish I bought 2 so my DH could have his own and stop bugging me for mine. I didn't know they were having the sale again. Where did you see it posted? I would love to get one for my DH and son.

For the most part, any "cheap" laptop will work just fine for the average user - surfing the internet, using word processing, etc. If you try and game on it (World of Warcraft, etc) it will probably lag a bit.

I'm posting from the Walmart $300 Compaq right now and it's great. We have 4 laptops and this one is my new favorite. It's a really great deal when you compare the memory etc. to other computers. Is Walmart putting it on sale again this weekend because I got my computer 2 weeks ago.

I got one for ds16 on the advice of his pal, the Computer Whiz, who said it was a great little deal. DS is at camp and he wants to be the one to set it up so we haven't tried it yet.
BUT, I was under the impression that this was not a sale price, but was and will be the regular selling price. I think the question was more one of will they have one when you want it. We went in the first day they were on sale and by mid- afternoon they were almost gone.

If they are sold out, I am sure you can find them around. Netbooks (mini laptops) are wildly popular, and everyone sells them now. I have an Acer Aspire One that I bought from BJ's for $200. Mine was the display unit. $300 is a normal price for the 1GB RAM, 160GB Hard Drive, 10 inch models. Mine works great with really no complaints. One word of warning though: almost all the minis have no CD or DVD drive. If you plan to need one, purchase an external DVD writer for about $75. Since it has a USB connection, it can be the single drive for all the minis you buy.

We have the $300 Walmart Compaq laptop and we love it. I believe Compaq is a division of HP (hewlitt Packard). It does everything we need it to do- word processing-DVD playing(burning) and internet surfing.:)

I thought they were popular too, I'm trying to sell a Dell Mini 9 I bought for DD last Christmas - only used about 2 hours and I'm not getting a bite!! I even have a HP Light Scribe which I got at Best Buy for $105 included. All I'm hearing from on Craigslist are scammers:mad:

It is such a great deal.

Love Love Love the $300 laptops from Walmart...we bought one 2 years ago for me during tax free and again last year in august during tax free and put it up for the boys as their christmas present!

We bought the compaq laptop from Walmart. We just gave it to my daughter yesterday for her 13th birthday. I will need to see if they have more. Once she opened it and used it I decided that I would like one for myself. I know our local Walmart only got like 10 in.

Is there any way to check stock at a local store before running all over town?

We live in MO and they are having the no sales tax this weekend. I thought the $298.00 price was the normal selling price. I am not for sure.

I thought it was a sale. My husband bought one last Tues or Wed. I called my local WM and they said they got 10 in for the sale and sold out that day. The wm in the next town over from us still had 2 left when I called so I sent him right away. I would love another one but I am pretty sure it was just a sale price.

We just bought one a couple of weeks ago when it was advertised. My DH loves it.

I don't know about this particular computer, but, I do not think giving a 9 year old a laptop computer is a smart idea.

The internet is a scary place filled with horrors. If your child is on a laptop, you are not able to watch and safe guard them.

"my child knows better", sorry, that was the mantra of every parent whose child has been victimized online.

Get a great desktop, keep it smack dab in the middle of the family room, and watch, watch, watch. Then after they go to bed, double check what they did, who they talked to, what they saw.

With the correct parental controls in place it's really not that scary. My son can only get on to two websites. Other than that I have to type in a password for him to go to any other website. He get's a little frustrated but he knows that's the only way he'll get to use the computer. Also, I get reports showing exactly what he did online. Although with these controls in place, I find he just plays the games I have loaded on the laptop which do not get online. I know not everyone thinks to put these controls in place but I hope this will help to remind some to do so.

I just want to respond to this. We are thinking of getting my children a laptop (ages 9 & soon to be 8) because they need it for school work (yes they are doing research projects on the computer, homework on the computer, etc). We don't have the space in our living area for a desktop computer, and I don't want them in the office/playroom using the desktop we do have, when we aren't in there. The laptop will be portable and they can use it on the kitchen table or in the family room, and I can monitor them. They will not be using it in their rooms or anywhere that I am not around. It is just easier and more convenient to have a laptop for them, instead of a desktop.

So, please don't assume that all parents who are getting their children a laptop are going to let them use a computer unsupervised. My reasoning for getting them one, is so that they can be supervised.

You are assuming that my daughter would be using it to get on the internet. She wants to play certain CD games and load up itunes. She rarely gets on the internet. And when she does it is things like Webkinz. We have parental locks setup for our computers. She does use the family computer in our den. We are smart enough people to look at what she has been doing on the computer.
