Communion gift

A few weeks ago I asked a similar question about my nephews confirmation. This time it's a friends daughter who is making her first holy communion, how much would you put in the card as a gift? Is a communion a bigger deal than a confirmation?

As a catholic I rank first communion higher. If it were a relative, I'd probably give a gift card for 100 at Disney or some store that has cool stuff kids like. For s non-relative I would suggest 25 to 50. I wouldn't give cash to a kid this young.

For a friends daughter, I think $20-$25 is appropriate.

Maybe a gift card to Claire's, Justice, Toys R Us, Barnes & Noble, or Amazon if you don't want to do cash.

For all friend's kids gifts of religious stuff I don't know about, I go to the Christian or Jewish bookstore and get the appropriate card and ask the owner/cashier what the heck to do I don't like admitting how ignorant I am about some of those social customs, so I try to educate myself. One day, I'll get the knack!

I would say it is a bigger deal but they are both big accomplishments. I say $40 is good. That is what i would give a friend's kid. I don't like to give giftcards - cash works perfectly esp if the parents put the cash away for a later date (education, etc).

Around here, 99.9% give cash or savings bonds, that usually ends up in some sort of savings/education account. $50 sounds good. I was just going through my kids bonds, and that was the average. We were smart with #1, cashed them out right away and out them in a mutual fund, worth much more than her siblings' bonds with their 1% interest rate! We just got lazy.

For a relative or my best friend's child I'd probably give $50. For a neighbor or co-worker's child maybe a bit less. Since almost everyone I know is putting away gift money in a college fund I would give cash.

Communion is bigger first time getting to take the host is a big deal...Confirmation is the older student confirming their religion. The choice in the church to continue on that path.

Communion-- the kids usually get jewellery, their first rosary, cross. Money is good too, if it not family I would do less. Maybe $25. Picture frames are nice too and there are a lot of them out there. Just go to Hallmark and you will find a whole section of stuff for First Holy Communion.

I would not do a gift card to other places. It is not a birthday. But that is just me.

first "real" bible
crucifix

for Mom/Dad or Godparent: a Mass Book, Mass book kit

I know what I don't know (and its a lot), so I'm not too proud to ask for help. Also, I'm kinda oblivious about things outside my little world, so its best to just ask instead of offending someone or looking like a dolt, which I would. I literally buy what I'm told

Around here, a very Italian/Irish Catholic area, cash is king. Some people have over 100 people at the Communion celebration (now is the season), they don't need tons of religious stuff.

Same here. I bought my Goddaughter a cross with her birthstone. Everyone else gets cash.

I'm Catholic but I suggest NOT buying any of the First Communion stuff out there. Most kids already have a bible from their religious instructions classes. The First Communion frames, statues and other things are cute but will soon just be one more thing to dust. Cash is always appreciated.

Man, am I a cheapo?!?!?

Maybe it's just the area I'm in, but my dd had First Communion last year and received $50 and a sterling silver bracelet from grandma & grandpa. The god parents (and mom and dad) gave more, and we went out for a nice meal -- but that was the extent of it. No big party, so friends didn't give anything.

However, our church/school really advocated that First Communion was about the sacrament, the true meaning of the day over the fancy dresses and parties. Maybe we took it too literally, but I know her classmates had the same type of day.

Well OP, I'd give cash. It's the amount I'm unsure of.

If everyone gives them a religious gift what are they going to do with all that stuff? How many rosarys, bibles, saint books can one kid have?

I give cash unless it were my Godchild. I always thought only the Godparents do the special rosary or piece of jewelry (chain with a cross). In our circle all cash gifts go into a savings account for college.

I give $25 for friends. $40 for family.
