Communication Within the Park

We are traveling with another couple (and kids). Since we don't have cell phones,we're thinking it would be worth it to pick up 2 cell phones and minutes at Wall-Mart just for our week so if we get separated in the Park or if the kids get lost, CM's can find us. Does this sound like the right thing to do, or does anyone else have an idea?

What about walkie talkies? I've been thinking about getting them for our trip in a couple of weeks.

Walkie talkies worked great years ago, then everyone got them and they were a royal pain...but then everyone decided they were a royal pain and switched to cell phones so I would think that WT's would be a reasonable solution. You might want to plan something like, "turn it on on the the :20 :40 or :00 if separated for about 5 minutes" so that you don't feel the need to keep it on all the time, both to save the battery and your sanity.

On our Universal trip last fall we were depending on cell phones and were just leaving them on, not realizing that the ques for some of the attractions were out of reach of the cell tower and the constant searching for service drained our batteries without our knowing it. It nearly messed us up the one day we were totally separated without a prior plan concerning where/when to meet at closing...

I would say just to have designated meeting spots. I tried the whole cell phone thing, and service was wonky in some areas, and in others, I couldn't hear the phone ring.
If the kids are old enough, why not plan to do the parks seperate during the morning, meet up for lunch, and then do some of it together.
