I guess if you go infrequently it wouldn't be as big a deal, but we go often and the masks were not something that my children were very keen on even the first time. It is nice to have the interaction with the CM's in each country, but since they have no interest in the masks we have to find another way, be it with the passports, or just striking up a conversation.
I would definitely vote for a change. Maybe the best route would be to suggest it to the sponsor, although I would think that surely they will come up with something new before long??
