Comets and Voices at the Space Race

Am I being totally stupid or what?!
Has the Space Race always had proper spoken commentary and little blue comets whizzing by?! I have just never noticed before! lol (mind you, I spend a lot of time with the sound off in-game and have no reason to frequent the Space race area... but I really have never noticed these things before lol)
