This has been bugging me since I got home from our trip a couple of weeks ago, so I guess I'll just let it out. ;)

I'm going to start this post by telling you all that I'm a smoker. :scared: Yeah...I'm one of THOSE people.

I'm also one of those smokers who will go out of my way to be considerate of those who don't smoke...especially when I'm out in public. And...I did this waaaaay before any law was written to try and force me to do so.

My gripe with DL is the DSA in Tomorrowland. That has got to be the stupidest place for a DSA I've ever seen. People have to walk right through a cloud of smoke to get off and on the train. Even I could barely handle the stink of the place.

It seems to me that a DSA should be large enough, and out in the open, so that the smoke and smell can escape the area easily, but that's not how it is in the park. 2 of the 3 DSAs in DL are tiny, confined areas. I remember the DSA that used to be right next to the HM...that place was just awful...very confined, and I'm glad they removed it.

IMHO...The DSA behind Big Thunder is the best in the park. It's off the main path and I found it to be very relaxing back there. I think DL should really consider putting all the DSAs in more out of the way places like this one.

DCA seems to have their DSAs in better areas except for the one near Soarin'. That one is terrible. The other 2 are off the beaten path or out in the open more.

By the way...I only saw one person smoking in the park outside of the DSAs. Some woman was brazenly walking down Main Street with a smoke dangling from her hand. I quickened my steps so I was right behind her then told DH, in a rather loud voice, "people like that lady is the reason that DL will someday ban smoking altogether."

I hate the whole "punish the lot for the sins of the few" kind of philisophy, but that's how things work in the real world.

Anyway...that's my rant. I hope DL corrects this very dumb decision. No wonder non-smokers hate us. :confused3

I couldn't agree with this one more. Last time we went to board the train there, we almost decided not too. The smoke cloud we had to walk through was just too thick. It stunk so bad. Having a DSA through an only path to get to one location is just not right.

I said the exact same thing to my husband one of the times we were walking through the smokers in Tomorrowland after having gotten off the train...and we got off that train there a lot!

I am a former smoker and do appreciate that the majority of the smokers are being good about using the DSAs, but that one is a stupid location.

on behalf of us nonsmokers THANK YOU for doing that!!! I work at a hospital and I am not kidding when I tell you how many times I have told someone who is sitting in front of a nosmoking sign smoking that this is a nonsmoking property, if they would like to smoke a quick walk to the sidewalk is the place to be. they even do this in front of the doors. . . so it truly is a pet peeve. . . back to DL, I was waiting for my dh and oldest ds to finish with honey i shrunk the audience to get over with and some knucklehead was smoking a joint, yep you read that correctly a joint, with his baby in his hands. .. . and he was a big dude, and I hadn't eaten my wheaties that day, so I asked a CM if he could take care of it. . . yes the one over by soarin sucks, especially if you use the lil girls room. . . as for the one by the train in TL, i must have really been there on a good breezy day, cuz I smell the one by thunder more than the one in TL. . . speaking of, isn't there another one by the the train over in NOS????

If there's a DSA in NOS, I didn't notice it. When I'm at DL, I usually only smoke 5 or 6 cigarettes a day, so I just went to the ones that I knew about. Who, in their right mind, wants to spend precious DL time in a smoke area? Well...actually, my daughter did. :rotfl2: After the 1st day with her having to grab a smoke every 1/2 hour, our families split.

Maybe it's because I work outside the home and can only get my fix during my breaks, but I've found that as long as I'm busy doing something I enjoy, I can go without for many, many hours. Tried quitting many times. I don't get the physical withdrawl symptoms...it's the habit itself that has me enslaved. :confused3

Bouncy....I applaud your concern for others. I've walked up the Autopia ramp and have seen clouds of smoke wafting upwards and have thought to myself why Disney wouldn't move it. What makes me a little preturbed is when I have to 'tattle' on smokers who light up on Main Street (a non smoking area) and they could care less if it's non smoking. I mean even though it might be a little smokey in and around the Tomorrowland/Autopia area, at least the people are smoking where it's allowed, and not ignoring the rules. ;) I truly appreciate your concern, thank you :thumbsup2

There's a DSA just in front of the Haunted mansion, on the riverfront, right beside the ferry to the island.

It's definitely difficult to find the balance, isn't it?

I always feel this strange nervous kind of shame, even in designated smoking areas, when I smoke in public. Believe me, I understand how bad smoking is...but people can be downright mean sometimes, even to someone who is truly trying to be as respectful as humanly possible.

And I agree completely about the DSA in tomorrowland!

I just want to say THANK YOU!!!! I truly appreciate it as a mother of a small child. We actually had some woman blow smoke in our faces (I was holding DS) at Downtown Disney.

Well as a Non-Smoker (who smoked briefly when she was younger) Thank YOU for being concerned!! And Thank You for being considerate enough to smoke in the DSA! I am borderline allergic to smoke, I will cough and my nose and eyes run and I've even been sick to my stomach after walking through the clouds of smoke. We avoid that train stop, we don't use it much at all. But, we don't use the train much really. LOL Anyway, I appreciate your comments and not hating on all the non-smokers, we appreciate the considerate smokers who do care enough to follow the rules.

I totally agree, it's a horrible place for a DSA! I have no idea why they thought that was a good place to have it!

It's good to hear stories about people who are being considerate. Just as there are mean non-smokers, there are a lot of smokers who feel others should have no rights to clean air. I have health problems that can be made worse even by second hand smoke. So I appreciate it when smokers are considerate.

The worst part about the one near Autopia is that, as a nonsmoker, I didn't expect it. I want there to be signs warning the unwary person what they are about to encounter (narrow passageway that is too long to hold your breath through), both on the way to and from the train.

For the future, I know "don't take that train or get off of it there". But I wish I knew before.

Jen...I agree! I've met MANY a rude, obnoxious smoker who doesn't care about others. I think that's part of the reason for the nervous shame feeling!
I never, EVER want anyone to think that way of me, and I do my very best to avoid that.

I'm glad they have DSA and agree that they should be in out of the way areas with good air circulation. When I was a smoker, I didn't realize how much the smell traveled until I quit 10 years ago. I really appreaciate the considerate smokers.

My younger dd has asthma and the smoke really bothers her. She holds her breath whenever she smells it because it will set off a terrible coughing fit for her. She's even been known to loudly comment on how rude eople are when they don't follow the rules.

It is so funny that you say that! We were headed to the train in TL and DH and DD8 were in front of me. We hit the cloud and I tried to hold my breath, but since it caught me off guard, I did not want to inhale to hold. I felt like I was practically running with the stroller to get thru there.

Then I remembered reading about this on these boards and thought to myself, "oh...that is what they were talking about!"

With the exhuast fumes over there too, that is really not a good place to breath!

I want to start out with saying THANK YOU SO MUCH to those of you who are smokers but are considerate smokers. :thumbsup2 Without going into a long story my grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer due to smoking earlier in his life (you know the 40's and 50's when it was the cool thing to do) and it's really hard for me to be around anyone who smokes. It's really hard emotionally...not to mention my allergic reaction to it. And it really makes me wonder why Disney would have that as a designated smoking area. I'll be sure to mention it to someone when I go next month.

Hi All...I agree that it is a terrible place for a DSA...but it is temporary. They are just trying to figure out a better place for it. Hopefully they will kick it into gear and get it fixed soon!

Yup your right it is temp. the DSA was originally under the monorail track, backing up to the "off road" section of Autopia, but with Nemo in the line went right into that area and now Disney needs to adjust and find a new location.

Did you notify a CM? I think that telling a CM would have been a better option. :)
