Comcast DVR vs DirecTv Tivo, differences?

We have DirecTv satellite, with Tivo, as well as Comcast cable, both regular TV (non hi def). We are contemplating acquiring a hi def TV, necessitating an upgrade in signal equipment. I very much like the Tivo with the DirecTv, but maybe this is the time to settle on one signal source, cable or satellite. Not familiar with the cable DVR, how does it compare, similar or different, to the regular Tivo?

Thanks.

I recently answered a question from someone deciding between the Comcast DVR and the premier HD DVR out there, the TiVo Series 3. Hopefully it is relevant enough to be useful information:
Here's a list of advantages I see the TiVo Series 3 DVR having over the Motorola DVRs that Comcast issues:

* Fast forward and rewind work more reliably and naturally on the TiVo Series 3. The Motorola boxes tend to have problems sometimes stacking-up remote commands.

* The TiVo will not re-record an episode if you've seen in within the last 30 days (unless you tell it to do so), while the iGuide software in Motorola boxes will record episodes marked new, even if you recorded that episode earlier in the week, watched it, and then deleted it. (This is common with shows on FX, TNT, USA, Sci-Fi, Lifetime, BBC, etc.)

* You can direct your TiVo to record programs from a website interface, as well as from the built-in program guide. However, note that there are indications that Comcast is getting ready to offer this service themselves, perhaps, though, for all their DVR customers. So that would be, at best, a wash.

* We, at least, have noticed a lot fewer SPDIF audio problems with the TiVo than with the Motorola boxes.

* The TiVo has 250GB of storage at a minimum, while the Motorola box has 160GB of storage at a maximum. The TiVo hard drive can be updated to over 1TB, and the TiVo apparently supports eSATA extended storage, while neither of those things are true for the Motorola boxes.

Thanks, bicker. Do i understand correctly, that the Tivo 3 is not the unit you have discussed in the past as being a poor choice? That would be the DirecTv HD DVR? I did Google some forums and review sites on the Tivo Series 3, which seems to be a replacement for a digital HD cable DVR, and it received glowing reports. Just plug in, put in a couple CableCards and you have all the great features of the past Tivos.

Thanks, bicker, for your thoughts.

I wouldn't spend $800 for the TiVo Series 3, but for $400 (which is pretty-much what it is selling for this week, after rebate) it is well worth it. There is one warning that I often make regarding the Series 3: It does require CableCards, and a small percentage of customers, including myself, were never able to get them working. I returned my $800 Series 3, and just bought another one for $400, hoping that over the last year the CableCard situation has gotten better.

There are basically two DirecTV DVRs: They used to offer the HR10, which is an earlier version of the TiVo, and is pretty good, but of course only works with DirecTV service. The HR10 is now discontinued, and they now only offer the HR20, which, FWIR, is really horrible.

I put in a cancel order on the DirecTv, ordered the TV, and have to upgrade the cable package now. I did order the TS 3 from here...http://store.tivocommunity.com/merc...ode=EA&Product_Code=2777&Category_Code=S3TIVO
I just received mine from Amazon.com. It was worth the extra $7, to me, to be able to pay with Discover. Otherwise, I would have definitely placed my order with the TCF Store. I actually had it in the shopping cart there, but abandoned it because of the credit card issue.

CableCards install is on Tuesday. Wish me luck.
