Combining Resale and Direct

If we buy the minimum required to get the blue card and then add more through resale, will we have resale restrictions on the points we buy resale?

For example, if we bought 150 Saratoga direct and then added more via resale, would we only be able to use the direct points at Riviera?

Yes.

One way to think about this is that the restrictions, or lack thereof, are tied to the contract, not the member. So resale contracts will still have the restrictions, even if the member has a direct contract that qualifies the member for the blue card and the perks that go along with that. The member would have the perks like buying a Sorcerer AP (when available), but only the direct points would qualify for use at Riviera, cruises, Disney hotels (reservation points), etc.

I think it's often overlooked that even the 11 and 7 month booking windows are a rule / restriction, just like use at RIV, or DCL, etc.

After all, each contract is technically identified by numbers.

Fictional example:
1234567.1 can be used at BLT at 11 months, because it's my BLT contract.
1234567.2 cannot be used at BLT at 11 months, because it's my AKV contract.
1234567.3 cannot be used at BLT at 11 months because it's my AUL contract.
1234567.4 can be used at BLT at 11 months, because it's my add on BLT contract.
Etc.

I am not sure it would be considered a rule. Points themselves are what determine where they can be booked when, regardless of what the owner owns. So, BLT points are the only ones that can be booked during a home resort period because they are deeded to BLT.

The home resort booking period can be longer or shorter, and from my reading of the rules, it does not need to be the same for all resorts. For example, they could give RIV owners a longer home resort period than say SSR owners get at their own resort. Everyone is entitled to one month only. They can also create different non home resort charts for different resorts, and I believe even charge a trading fee for some.

However, in all those cases, I don't think it can be a direct vs. resale change. So, they could all of a sudden, with the new VGF points make the home resort priority for VGF owners 11 months and non VGF owners 5 months vs. the 11/7 they have at the other resorts.

Only a pain if you want to stay at RIV and any future resorts included. It is why we sold our BLT after less than a year because we love RIV and it really was disappointing when a room opened up and I couldn't switch it because the points I had were restricted BLT!

Not necessarily, but the resale restrictions have definitely complicated things. Other things that can complicate using your points are multiple home resorts (not too complicated) and multiple use years (more complicated, because they cannot be combined without transfers).

I have both. It's actually not a pain at all. The only restrictive resort is Riviera so you just know you can't use the new resale points there.

I mostly agree with KAT that the resale restrictions are not much of an issue right now (unless you love RIV more than words can say.)

But I am also older and planning to roll out of the system in 2042.

If you are pretty young and planning for a longer term ownership, losing the 2042 renewals like the BCV, BWV and BRV resorts may be more of a factor in your case.

If you buy the 150 points direct then you'll be able to stay there with them. If Riviera isn't a consistent stay then there are other ways to stay there. Disney always takes cash. Or you could rent a reservation or get a points transfer and rent out your own points. I have direct points that I could book there but in most cases where we go we tend to stay at the same spots anyway so even if I wasn't able to book their with points I owned there's every other DVC resort on property to stay at.

Only you can decide how important that is. For us, it is worth having unrestricted points.

My adult kids hope to use it well into the future and having all future places as an option is worth it for sure, especially given that in 2042, some resorts will most likely become part of the “new”.

I forgot about the upcoming end dates. I do plan on taking grandkids in the future, so definitely something to consider.
