Please forgive me if this has been talked about before. If it has, please just point me to the thread.

What I'm asking (and I don't know if it's even possible)...
I have points for my home resort. I have a few (32) banked from this year. I get 160 next year. I can borrow 160 from the following year. If I want to reserve a stay and the amount is over 352 (32+160+160) and I wanted to rent points, how (or can) do those points get into my account to make the reservation?

If that's not possible, is it simply I reserve nights 1-6 with my points (with the possibility of some points leftover) and then rent the points for night #7?

Again, forgive me if this is obvious to some...it's the first time I've ever considered this possibility.

Thanks,

You can try to find another DVC member willing to transfer the number of points you will need to complete your reservation. Those points may then be used to make your reservation so that you will have full control over that. Depending on the number of points needed, you may find that some members are willing to only transfer a large number of points since only one transfer is allowed per Use Year. Transferred points may be banked for an addition year or use. They will retain their original Home Resort status and Use Year.

As long as the transferred points are for your Home Resort, they may be used at 11 months for reservations. If they are from a non-Home resort, they can only be used within 7 months.

Failing that, renting points for night 7 is another good option. You would want to try to have MS link the two reservations together, otherwise you might need to checkout and back in for the last night.

Just look on the DVC Rent/Trade Board for other members offering to transfer points.

Good luck! :)

How many points short are you? If 24 or less DVC will rent you points at $15 each.

I'd pay for a transfer for the same home resort and reserve at 11 months out for all but the last night assuming the transferred points don't show up online for you, then call and add the last night by phone that same day. Even if you have to get extra points and borrow less, you'll be ahead. It might even be worth getting enough not to have to borrow if you can/will use the points otherwise that you would have borrowed.

Thank you. I had forgotten that transferring points was an option. I think in the back of my head I knew that, but old age had taken over. ;-)

It probably won't be for the same as my home resort, so the 11 month out option won't be an issue whether I rent from DVC or transfer from another member. Our home resort is SSR, which we like a lot (did tree house villas last year and enjoyed those too), but we're also trying others where/when possible. The good thing about SSR being one of the least popular or most sold or both, is even if I can't get the resort I want at 7 months, I can still fall back to SSR. Again, we like SSR (especially since DW can go to spa right there on property), so it's really not a fall back position for us, but for lack of a better term, that's what I'll call it. ;-)

That's good advice. Transferring more than I really need to require borrowing less is something I hadn't considered. I've considering getting more points via resale since it's so much cheaper than DVC (I know way less benefits), but then again, since most of the kids are grown, we probably won't need more points often...I'm considering a grand villa so we can do a vacation for all kids one year (maybe next), so that's why the question came up.

Then you could either get points transferred in (or rent from someone without a transfer) to take advantage of the home resort priority for the destination resort or get the cheapest ones. If you can get them so you can reserve online, that's a plus but if I understand correctly that's likely going to require both the same home resort and UY.

Since it appears you're already an owner it really isn't any less benefit going resale. If you have enough time you could go that route now, transfer enough to kick start you for a few years or just get by this trip and look for an add on for the future with a number of variable options.

I already own points at SSR and I'd like to pick up points at another resort for the 11 month out option, but go resale and it's no longer "allowed".

It sounds like you are getting some bad information. What specifically is not allowed?

Pro tip: Never say the word "resale" to a DVC guide and expect honest or helpful answers about it.

You lose nothing of value. You already have qualified points, they do not become no qualified if you buy resale. Thus you have all of the discounts and benefits. All you'd lose, and I see it as a plus, is the ability to use (overpay) THOSE points for cash type exchanges like DCL.

As I understand it, if I purchase resale, I do not get the 11 month home resort option. So, since my current points are SSR, if I bought OKW resale, I could not book OKW at 11 months.

I did go back and re-read the announcement from Apr 4th and I do see now some of those restrictions only apply to someone who does not already own DVC and gets resale.

_auroraborealis_ - Trust me...I DON'T believe what a DVC sales person tells me. I had one trying to give me numbers that simply did not add up to try to say it was a better value than resale.

I guess the biggest for me is not having the 11 month home resort option. As I mentioned in another post, I re-read the Apr 4th announcement and most of that stuff isn't really a big deal (and since I already own a direct buy contract is not applicable).

No, this is wrong, and if someone told you this they lied. The 11-month home resort option has not been taken away, and I'm not a lawyer but I'm not sure it can be. It's at the heart of the real estate interest being purchased.

If you buy OKW resale, you can book OKW at 11 months with those OKW points.

That's the bad information. If you own points at a resort, then you can reserve with those points at that resort at 11 months out. It does not matter if they are direct or resale.

Anyone needs to know enough about DVC prior to deciding to purchase to know these type of answers inherently. As noted, this is simply incorrect. Still, timeshares change and evolve so even reading the legal paperwork doesn't guarantee one knows where things will be in 5-10 years.
