Combining an exchange and point ressie

We have a reservation that we booked using our points for 8 days next June and we have an exchange through II for 7 of those same days. (We originally got the exchange for family to go with us, but they can't go).

What I'd like to do is use the exchange for ourselves, but to keep the one day of the points ressie so we'd still have 8 days.

Can I cancel/adjust our points ressie to just the one day and then link it to the exchange reservation so that we don't have to move?

TIA,
Mike

You can request that, but they won't be able to guarantee you won't have to move. But they usually try hard (from my experience).

We've combined a 7 night studio on DVC points with a 1 bedroom exchange and asked for them to be side by side (lockoff studio with 1 bedroom = 2 bedroom) and they were able to do it. There was no guarantee (since this is a request), but it ended up working out for us.

At what point can I, and who do I need to contact to request to link the two? I guess I'm not sure how soon they can see my exchange reservation and can Member Services do that, or do i need to ask the resort etc?

Thanks,
Mike

You can try it and for most situations, be successful. You will likely have to check in again on the changeover day. The problem areas would be for rooms that are not the same such as different view types at BWV or dedicated vs lockoff 2 BR units. Still, you might be able to rebook for the correct unit type if need be.

I appreciate the help, but When can I request to have this done? And who do I need to talk to? Member Services?, The resort?

Since both reservations were made thru MS, they will be the ones to contact. I'd do it as soon as you have your plans finalized.

As Dean noted, there is a high probability that you'll be able to do just what you're looking for as long as the villas are the same (dedicated 2BR villa, lock-off Studio, dedicated Studio, etc.).

I'd just call MS and explain the situation - I'd expect they will be able to link everything together. You will probably still need to check in twice, but shouldn't need to move.

Enjoy! :)

I actually just did this myself in July, so I can tell you how it worked for me. I had an II exchange for SSR for a week, and needed to add one extra day (for better airfare!). I made a points ressie in the same type unit (studio) and then had MS cross reference the reservations. They can not actually link the reservations, because they aren't the same type of reservation. That is why they won't guarantee that you will be able to stay in the same room, but they told me it shouldn't be a problem. When I checked in at SSR, they were able to tell me at that time that I would be able to keep the same room, but I would have to come down and check in again on that last day. I also had to get new KTTW. Otherwise, it went very smoothly. I was a little concerned because we were using ME, but that worked out fine too.

As noted, MS is the best option. You need the DVC reservation # that's printed on your confirmation, not the II confirmation #. Have them cross reference the two reservations. Upon check in, reiterate your needs. I have done the same as well as matching up other types of reservations that didn't normally do so such as cash and points or a 1 BR with a 2 BR lockoff the following day. In most situations I did have to check back in and get new keys but it partly depends on how MS sets it up and who you get at check in. I'd discourage trying to force the option to not have to check in again as it can get confusing to the CM.

Thanks Everbody!
I appreciate the detailed explanation of how to go about this. I really won't mind checking out and back in again, especially if we don't have to move!
