I'm flying Comair for the first time in 15 years this weekend. I'm trying to figure out what suitcase to pack. Is it all still gate check on the bags?

I know my rolling garment bag won't fit through the securuity x-Ray machines. Of course that's the bag I have sitting out ready to pack.

ComAir flys those smaller regional jets so the only thing that will fit in the overhead bin is a very thin computer type bag. Any "carryon" larger than that will be checked at the gate.

It's not Comair that will be the issue with gate checking, if you're bag won't fit through X-Ray machines, it is not a carry-on, simple as that. That bag should be checked BEFORE security, and any applicable fee paid.

The fact that a carry-on cannot be brought on a plane is because the overheads are small, these bags are often checked at the gate (or on the tarmac before you board).

Even though they gate check larger carryons, they still must meet the carryon size requirements (Delta is 22"x14"x9" or 45" total). It doesn't mean you can bring an oversize bag to the gate to gate check free of charge.

I just didn't want to get to the airport and find out my only option was a gate check. I was freaking out about the toilietries more than anything. I wanted to make sure I could check a bag--fees and all.

And yes I'm neurotic when flying an airline I haven't flown recently.

You can always check bags at the check-in counter no matter what type of plane.
