has anyone had any experience of columbus travel insurance. they have given me a relatively good price for my pre existing medical condition and also covering the ash cloud but reviews on the net are not good - any comments gratefully received thanks Catrin

Show me an insurance company with good reviews, people do not post good reviews about travel insurance, only bad experiences.
Its all down to your own individual claim and how its handled, sometimes all goes well other times not, you won't know unless you are unfortunate enough to claim.

I am considering using them myself, almost sure I will. Just waiting for DW to have her blood pressure checked tomorrow evening then I need to buy ASAP, out last policy expired a few days ago.

We have our insurance with Columbus. Hope I do not need to test their customer service :)

they are not coving the ash cloud at the moment as I have called them unless you got the policy before saturday

I took out insurance in March with Columbus for this year's trip and funnily enough I was looking at the small print yesterday but couldn't see anything about volcanic ash so wasn't sure if we were covered or not? :confused3

Those insurers who are covering the ash cloud have a condition written in that your policy needs to have been taken out before it was known (in this case, Saturday's date). Many of them wrote this into their policy summaries after the chaos caused by the volcanic eruption last April.

When I read through the details on Direct Travel and on Columbus Travel last night, both had this written in and clearly stated that subject to the above conditions, that they are covering the ash cloud. You can't just read the point form cover levels on insurance. You really have to open up the full Summary and read through it carefully to see what you are covered for.

direct travel were covering it yesterday but only 75% of the value insured is what they told me on the phone. i'm hoping it clears away by monday

I just called Columbus Insurance and even more worried than before. Am kicking myself as I meant to book this insurance last week.
I have 2 trips booked, a week in Majorca in 4 weeks time and 3 week to Orlando from 3rd August. They said that if I booked annual insurance today, I would not be covered for ash cloud for either trip!! Infact, as there is an ash cloud event going on at the moment, I wouldn't be covered for the entire time of the policy! Therefore they actutally agreed that there is no point booking an annual insurace at this time.
I actually already have annual insurance with my bank but it doesn't cover strikes and I was worried about potential of Virgin strike. Wasn't even thinking about ash cloud. Have to pay for holiday in a few weeks. Just very angry with myself for not getting this all sorted earlier.
Anyone find an insurance company that will cover you for August trip now?
