While there is no Columbus day celebrations it is a very busy time of year. There are several states, and major cities that have long weekend or even a full week break for students around the that time each year.
Yes Columbus Day is a busy time. Many schools across the country have a fall break not only on Monday but all week. Also, you have all of the WDW festivities like F & W, and MNSSHP. Not to mention that the temps become more reasonable. It's definitely a busy week and October in general is a busy month.
Despite the above posts, I stand by my original comment - you won't notice a difference between that week and the week before/after. I'm local and visit the parks regularly.
That week is fall break for many and is certainly not slow. In our experience; it's been busier than our summer trips (June, July and Aug) and much more crowded than the first few weeks of Sept., but definitely not as crowded as xmas.
We have been there twice over Columbus Day weekend. While it is not Christmas time busy it is still very busy being a three day weekend. October at one time was a great time to visit WDW. Not so much anymore with the Halloween parties at the MK and the Food and Wine Festival at EPCOT.
Columbus day, not a huge holiday in the south.
--------but------
month of Oct is the busiest month of the year.
Every park has a celebration all month. Wdw, Universal, Sea world etc.
Most schools have a school break. Weather is normally gorgeous.
