colonoscopy question

My DH did not have a consult before his.
My friend also did not have a consult before his.

If you are having no issues, then there’s no reason to have a consult - IMO

I have had 2. One when I was 36 and having issues with anemia and they did it to try and figure out what was going on. That one I had a consult with GI prior but it was with the NP. My 2nd one was last year (51) I just called the surgeon's office that was going to do it and they set up the appointment. I was a known patient of that office as he had done my hernia repair a few years prior. I saw him for a few minutes before the procedure (I was on the table) and then afterwards I was half out and I heard him tell my mother in law that it went well and no issues. I was surprised at first that I didn't have an office visit prior but I guess that's how it is done these days.

Over the years I've had maybe 6 colonoscopies. Every time I've had a visit with the doctor maybe 30 days begire. I've aged out now of future pure routine ones.

I had my first one back in January for ongoing issues and I had a phone appt with the dr before the procedure. On the day of, we chatted for a few minutes in the procedure room before we got started. I also had a phone appt for the results.

When I had mine last year (I was too young for it to be a "screening" colonoscopy), I did not meet the physician prior to the day of the procedure. Either my PCP or hematologist ordered it and I was assigned a GI based on the availability, since it was considered urgent. I met him about ten minutes before the procedure.

I do have GI issues and had my first colonoscopy last year, ordered by my primary. I did not have a consult with the doctor beforehand but I did see another provider in his office for my persistent GI issues.

On the one hand a routine colonoscopy is a simple procedure they do all the time so a consult seems unnecessary. However, they give you lots of the good drugs so perhaps a consult beforehand so the doctor is more familiar with your inidvidual situation is not the worst thing in the world.

Yes. I went in for a consultation before I had my first colonoscopy. I saw the NP, not the doctor. They took a history, went over the procedure & the prep-instructions and also answered any questions I had.

I had my first one about 10 years ago and did meet with the dr before--still Im the type that needs to know everything before getting started with anything
Also I had a list of requirements that I needed to be made sure would be met--although with the midazolam I wouldnt have known if they were met or not--
next one and the last one was 5 years later
after the first time I was in no mood to have it done again but forced myself

I told my DH that as soon as my eyes were opened we were out of there
actually it start out very good since about a week before my app they called to say they were going to have to move it 3 weeks later
something about needing that app for someone else
I told them I wasnt going to last another 3 weeks and needed to have it done before or it wasnt going to happen--so instead of the first app I was the 2nd or 3rd
so of course we get there 2 hr before and the dr was running about 1 /12 late which didnt help with the panic attacks
Finally it was my turn--when it was done and I was just coming too I said to DH Im awake lets get out of here. He said I needed to stay a while and wouldnt say why
It was only after I threatened to leave that he told me I stopped breathing not only once but twice
Apparently I was a little to frigidity so he kept pumping fentanyl since the doses werent working will when it finally took hold all the fentanyl went into my system at once and caused the breathing issue.
The dr had to actually give me Narcan to reverse the drug overdose he caused
He was a real piece of work too cause I called to get the notes and all it said was my STATS dropped--no they didnt drop they crashed.
Sad thing though is I work in the pharmacy in a hospital and someone coded in the GI lab so a pharmacist had to go up to assist-same thing that happened to me was happening to another person.
He was having a colonoscopy stopped breathing but the Narcan didnt help him.
He ended up dying on the table. 54 years old.

when I heard that Im for sure dont having these.
So if I ever have to be put under Im going to insist theres an anesthesiologist there
I dont mean to scare the OP but just make sure your covered.

Sorry might be slightly unrelated but I just came here to say that I have now had two colonoscopies without sedation and that's by far my recommendation. You are in and out in less than 20 min you only have very slight discomfort at the bends but nothing memorable and you don't have all the side effects of the sedation. Honestly I'm amazed that they even offer sedation for such a procedure! Good luck though I know it can be stressful

You are in and out in less than 20 min you only have very slight discomfort at the bends but nothing memorable and you don't have all the side effects of the sedation. Some of us need the sedation. I had no side effects from it. But "discomfort" is what I'm trying to avoid. I'm glad it's an option. It actually wasn't given to me as an option, it was "This is how we do it".
