Any CW experts out there? We are heading there next weekend. We have been once before, but I hear the experience is even better if pre planned (we here on the dis can appreciate that right?) We ate a Kings Arm last time and loved it, but I was wondering about Christina Campbells. Also trying to decide between the Cry Witch tour or the Williamsburg lamplight tour (the one not associated with the park) Any tips are apreciated!!! Thanks!!

I think any Tavern would be lovely. I can't remember which one we ate at. They had sweet potato muffins that were so yummy, I bought a recipe book and I often make them for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I'm sure Christian Campbell's would be delicious.

Are children attending wth you?

I'd lke to make it up there while my kids are young so that they can dress up in period costume while we tour.

We upgraded our pass when we went as we had a package--but we wanted to be able to tour the inside of the buildings. We also visited some off-site house, but I cannot remember what it was. It was part of the upgrade and totally worth the visit.

Williamsburg Winery was terrible.

We did the witch trial when we went. DH and I enjoyed it. My step-mother who is a purist when it comes to history didn't like that the jury (the audience) pardoned the accused which b/c she says that never would happen back then. She's such nitpicker.

We had sweet potato rolls at another Williamsburg restaurant called "Food for thought" and loved them!! I totally forgot they serve them at the Taverns, but now that you said it, I do remember having them there. The other restaurant must have gotten the idea from them.
We will have kids with us. Do many kids dress up while there? I've heard you could rent costumes but wondered how many people actually do it. (when we were there last it was crazy hot, and I think the last thing most people wanted to do was put there kids in another layer of clothing!!) My husband was planning on doing something else with them while my friend and I do the witch thing or the ghost tour. Did you find it to be something that would frighten kids?

I've never been with children. But when we went, I saw a number of young children dressing up. I mean--it isn't like all the kids dressed up at costume at Disney. But if it is somethng the kiddos would like, I would do it.

I don't think my kids are old enough for ghost tours--but the ones I know of (like in St. Augustine) are very spooky. My oldest is 9.

There were lots of kids at the witch trial and it wasn't scary at all. I think many of the kids thought the trial was funny--b/c they do speak authentically..and of course the charges are just absurd. I think they are what skewed the votes much to my step-mom's dismay.:lmao:

It was like sittng in a court room (but in an auditorium).

I do not know if that is the same as the Cry Witch tour you are speaking of--if different, I don't know anything about it. (Just looked it up--it's the same trial. Should be fine for kiddos.)

Christiana Campbell's is great! We did the Witch Trial & a ghost Tour & a storytelling tour - all great fun. Check Colonial Williamsburg's website for their calendar of activities. Menus from the taverns are also available there. We love CW - hope you have a great trip!

If you had to choose just one tour (Ghost or Witch) which one would you choose? I am dumping the kiddos with my husband, so I don't think he will go for two! Are they really that scary? The website says not suitable for children due to content so I won't be taking my 3 and 7 year old, but my friends son is 10, he should be fine right? How inappropriate could the content at Colonial Williamsburg be?

I just found out that the $20 costume rental also includes a set of activities children wouldn't normally get to do. Things like delivering a letter to the post office, and planting seeds in a garden! Totally worth the $20!! So glad you said something about it or I never would have even considered it! Thanks!!!

Nothing inappropriate in any of the programs. As far as which tour - it depends on your tastes. The ghost tour we went on was fun - they had a lantern & asked participants to take turns carrying it to lead the way for the group. You walked to the various locations & stood outside to hear the tale - you weren't allowed to enter the bldgs because it was not a CW conducted tour.

The Witch trial took place in the Capitol. Lanterns were lit & the accused was brought in for the trial. Not as serious as you'd expect & certainly not offensive in any way.

I'm not sure which ghost tour you're planning, there were a couple of different ones when we were there, but whatever you decide it should be enjoyable.
