My son will be heading to New Orleans and Mississippi for his Spring Break next week to help with cleanup/rebuilding. Anyone else going or have a child going? I know many colleges and churches have been organizing groups to help with the efforts down there.

What a great idea! I'd be interested in knowing how widespread this is.

My DS is suppose to go down and help out over spring break, but I am having second thoughts about how safe it is for him. He is 14 and I didn't give it much thought until DS who was a medic in Iraq and is now working in an army hospital had a fit when I told him his DB was going. He had a laundry list of shots he thought he should have before he went and just really didn't think it was a great place for a group of kids to be.

Your DS is in college, so that would make a big difference, but I would still worry about them.

I know several people going. Both of the big christian student organizations on campus here (University of NH) have people going, and I think some of the people doing the alternative break challenge are going too. I'm not going personally, but I do know several that are, both to New Orleans, and to Mississippi.

What a wonderful thing to do. :thumbsup2 for everyone who is going to help out.

My dad went last October and he, my mom and I will likely be going this fall (team is still being decided) with a group from their church. The church has been sending rotating teams since Katrina hit. Right now a group of high schoolers are out there doing great things (mainly cleaning and general labor, helping wherever people need) and have said in their messages home that it is a life changing experience. I do agree about getting some shots before going. I already have to get most of them for my Kenya trip, but if I didn't have them, I would have gotten them. Your local health dept should be able to tell you what they recommend.
