My daughter (she will be a HS senior this year) has never expressed interest in going to the University of Kentucky but she just received via UPS a Big Blue Magic Eight Ball that plays music when you turn it over to ask a question. (All of the answers are selling points for the Univ of Kentucky.) Is anyone else or your children receiving things like this from colleges? She is a not an athlete but is good student (good but not good enough for Ivy League). This just seems kind of exteme. We do live in a state that borders Kentucky but I can't figure out why she would be targeted. I'm guess I'm just asking to see if this is a common practice from a lot of universities. Any other interesting loot being received by HS seniors?

I never received anything like that, but I got at least one letter from a college (most I've never even heard of) a day my senior year. I got letters from universities in Washington, Hawaii, California, New Hampshire, etc. and I live in Texas. I actually still receive letters & emails every now and then and I leave for college on Sunday :confused3

From my experience.. it starts in Junior year.. it takes the pre test scores and interests...and if the high school releases them, grades. Based upon the score and interest and number of kids from the high school at that school.. you can get a package..

for example.. when my jr son was signed up for a tour at U of Indiana - he got a super package that included all sorts of info and websites, U of Ill same thing plus emails all the time.. but when he went on a tour of U of FL.. he only got confimation of his visit time.. he was wondering why.. well how many kids from his high school and midwest go to U of FL - not many - so they don't waste their resources.. where U of Indiana and Ill - have lots of kids from his school and area so he is a "good target"

We're used to all of the letters and emails. I just am surprised at a school sending things as involved as a full sized magic eight ball. I'd be interested in hearing about what other things are being sent out other than letters. What kind of things are other schools sending?

As a UK alum (College of Law '88), I just want to say, "Go Big Blue!" :thumbsup2 I'm glad to see UK going after quality students.

I remember when I was looking at undergrad schools, I tossed anything that said "Dear High School Senior" or had my first name (I go by my second). If it had my second name, I opened it. One piece of mail really got my attention--it was handwritten by the Dean of Students. That really impressed me. I looked into that school much more seriously and ended up going there: Centre College, home of the Praying Colonels (hence my screen name).
