College parents...fall semester?

Anyone know if the colleges and universities are obligated to show how they will coordinate the testing of thousands of students in the event of an outbreak? Will there student healthcenters be required to stock a minimum of (for arguments sake say 40% population) Covid tests? Minimum of outdoor kiosks for the testing? Obligated to have a minimum of Flu tests on campus as well to weed those students out. Maybe invite say a CVS/Walgreens with deep procurement ties onto campus to manage things as a supplement to the health center?

Plan for what to do with sick kids?

Just thinking of all the college towns over the US and since the influx is temporary and so young these towns probably don't have hospital capacity for sick student swarm of thousands at once who can't be sent home so there need to be plans in place in a prepare for the worst and hope for the best sort of way. Wish there was a site that gathers this info :(

I’m thinking they will be dealing with these issues as they arise. Seems to be the way we react as a country, unfortunately. After something happens. Colleges are about the money so they want those kids back first and foremost.

Yeah, but schools like UF, FSU, UCF, USF, UM, etc are better situated to begin with because they have medical schools as a part of the university. Med schools are a vastly better resource than most colleges have.

Also, the larger schools have large dorm capacity and can set aside rooms or wings of dorms for isolation, which is what all of the larger FL state universities are doing.
Yes, I was answering the question about what Colleges and Universities were doing by telling you what ours was doing. All schools are making plans of some sort, some will be great and some will be poor. But they all have advanced notice.

There is a list of schools and which will be open etc. https://www.chronicle.com/article/Here-s-a-List-of-Colleges-/248626/#.XqMEJ_x2ry4.twitter

The information for my daughter’s university wrong. ^^^
UCF is also mostly wrong -- based on ONE Tweet by the university president back in April.

It's correct in the sense that back in April they were "planning" on in-person classes. That's correct; they were.

The reality in July is very, very few in-person classes.

I think a lot of schools are planning on having students back on campus (i.e. paying room and board) but having most classes online.

Yep, Universities want students paying for dorms and meal plans, but don't want to risk instructors so most learning will be remote even for Colleges on the list as open for Fall.

DS's friend from Alabama just reported to their entire friend group here in PA that he tested positive, and it's not so bad.
WTH, it's never bad at first, neither is cancer.

What is happening, I feel like the floor just dropped & kind of feel sick.

Thank you OkeyDokey

It probably won't be bad, but I would suggest your son wait 4-5 days and then get tested.

You would think dorm, shared bathrooms, cafeterias, and college parties would be a bigger risk than huge lecture halls where people could space out.... You could even put some plexiglass in classrooms to protect older professors

Got the updated info for dd's school today. The students will return to campus in late August. Classes will be 1/3 face to face, 1/3 online and 1/3 hybrid. They will have no breaks and in person classes will end the day before Thanksgiving. No word on Graduation ceremony but I'm assuming there won't be one. :sad1:

Right now, East Lansing (home of Michigan State University) is dealing with an outbreak involving a campus bar. The exposure dates were 6/12-6/20 and, so far, 152 cases have been linked to the bar. Out of the cases, 128 are primary exposures from the bar in people ages 18-28 and 24 cases are secondary exposures in people ages 16-63. Nobody has been hospitalized at this point and 38 cases are asymptotic.

I think drinking & partying among college students is probably a big threat and major way this will spread. It seems much more likely that 150 kids drinking, dancing and yelling at a party will spread virus faster than 150 masked kids quietly taking notes in a lecture hall.

I don’t think anyone knows how this is going to play out, but these college outbreaks happening in the summer when campuses are pretty quiet doesn’t bode well for fall at all. This just stinks.

In the 2 years my dd has been on campus at school she has been sick more than she was all 4 years of HS and 2 years of CC here at home.
I don't have much faith that these procedures the schools put in place are going to do much for keeping an outbreak of COVID from spreading rampant through the student population.

Sadly I agree. I think it's still highly likely many schools will have to reverse course on students returning.

Local municipalities need to be taking note and address close the bars before they lose the entire lifeblood that is a major campus in town.
