My son doesn't want to live in the dorms, he would rather get an apartment, but this school mandates 2 years of living in the dorms.

My friends college mandated that each freshman lived in the dorms. Kids who lived 2 blocks away had to live in the dorms for their first year. Kinda crazy if you ask me. But I do think dorm life is really part of the college experience. I met a lot of people in my dorms and learned a lot about living on your own. Also my dorms used to hold special study sessions and event weeks. Just the dorming students could attend. It was a big help.

Good luck to all these soon to be college students. I remember the wait. It was so nerve racking. The college I chose was actually my reacher college. I was so relieved to finally get the letter. I know my college wanted a dorm deposit by like the middle of May. So some of you might still have to wait. Good luck and chose wisely! :wizard:

I asked this over on the college board but thought I would ask here also.

Do you send letters stating that you are not attending after all to the colleges that you've been accepted at but have not decided to go to?

DD only applied to 2 schools.
I thought she should have given herself more options... but she knew what she wanted.

Was accepted and got partial scholarship offers at both... but of course she's leaning toward the out of state school which will cost considerably more than the in-state option.
:rolleyes2

She is touring campuses over spring break next week so we'll see.

DS still hasn't heard from his first choice school...The College of New Jersey, but has been accepted at Rutgers. We are still hoping, and will hear by April 1, but the longer it goes, we feel the slimmer the chance.

My DS sent letters to the Colleges he didn't want to attend but got acceptances from.
They may put it in a record or something, so he thanked them and gave them a reason why he wasn't attending.

I think sending a letter or even an email is a decent thing to do. My older DS was accepted and didn't go to a school that waitlisted a number of his classmates. I think he owed it to them to let the school know, so that maybe one of them could get the spot.

Thanks! In my mail today we received a letter from one of the colleges he has decided not to attend. It has a tear off part at the bottom for us to return telling them of his plans, whether he is going to attend or not and if not, what school he will be attending. We will be contacting the other two schools soon too.

My ds applied to only one college. They state they accept 80% of all freshman that apply and it doesnt hurt that I worked there before. Its only a commuter college so he'll live at home and I made him send in a letter asking to be a lifeguard on campus. He might apply to the state university soon too. We havent heard yet, but I am not worried at all.

DS was accepted at Kent State and even got offered a $2500 scholarship there. They have assigned him a permanent email address. They are hounding him to pick a dorm and schedule classes. The funny thing is that we have told them repeatedly that he is going to Youngstown State, both in writing and phone calls. Apparently KSU doesn't take "no" for an answer.

I applied to graduate school (for Speech Language Pathology) so it's completely different but it's still college :goodvibes

Our choice has to be made by April 15th, a little sooner then Undergrad.

I was accepted to Penn State so far. I am still waiting to hear back from 4 other schools (Hunter, Queens, UMass and University of Maryland).

I will visit the schools during my spring break and hopefully have more of a ranking in my head (I dont have a first choice  ).

Good Luck everyone! :wizard:

I go to Penn State. :) I love it here!

Good luck to all the soon-to-be new college gals and guys! Such an exciting time!

I'm actually graduating college (FINALLY), so am in the job hunting process. Wish me luck! :)

My daughter only applied to two schools and was accepted into the honors program at each. Fortunately, her first choice has a rolling admissions process, so she got her acceptance in October. She has also had a couple of very nice offers to play basketball and has respectfully declined them to concentrate on academics, so we are waiting on an academic award package (fingers crossed!). Her coach has been contacted by a very strong academic institution about basketball, and she may go visit them since they place emphasis on the academics as well. I thought we were done!

My son doesn't want to live in the dorms, he would rather get an apartment, but this school mandates 2 years of living in the dorms. We did question the dorm situation. You can file why you don't want to live in the dorms, but your excuse has to be that either you live with your parents or you are financially unable to do so.

My oldest daughter attends this university, so my son knows what the dorms are like, but she said the last 2 years, the dorms are so packed, that they have 3 to a room, instead of 2. So they have been letting 2nd year students off campus. I don't see how a university can mandate that you have to stay in a dorm. If you don't stay in a dorm, they drop your classes. (This is the only thing I don't agree with, with this school).

I came from a college that mandates four years of dormitory living. You must live on campus, period. It's actually awesome - their objective is to create an insular community, sort of an incubator for you to grow by getting constant exposure to each other, and they succeed brilliantly.

DD was accepted at University Of Central Florida and Florida State University. She has chosen Florida State University.

Hi Lynn,

DD's heard from 3, still waiting for 2 more.

Accepted at Georgetown, UCLA, and University of Colorado-Boulder. How's that for variety, and two coasts to boot?!?! :) The other 2 are very much "reaches", but hey, it's all a crap shoot so who knows what will happen?

The waiting is killing me more so than her. I'm not a patient person. DD's attitude mirrors that of her classmates "Accept me or reject me-just decide!"

Good Luck to everyone!!

Congrats to your DD! Feel free to PM me if you have quesrions about Georggetown...I graduated from GU in '03.

YES!!!!! Great news from DD's first choice!!!!!

She's at the beach and had told me she wouldn't let me open it, but when I called and said she had "the big letter" from her college she relented and let me open it. I think she knew I was more nervous than she was!!!!

DD has been accepted at 4 of her 6 potential schools and has narrowed it down to one she was already accepted to and another that will start sending decision letters on 3/20 and continue until 3/31. Fortunately, she fell in love with her former "second choice" when we went to open house 2 weeks ago. I think she will be in turmoil if she gets accepted to her former first choice. UGH!

Congrats to everyone who has already been accepted and has made their decision. That is just awesome! :goodvibes: Hugs and pixiedust to everyone still waiting  pixiedust:

That's funny it reminds me of last year when my son was going through this. Once he had an acceptance and scholarship from his top choice he notified the other schools of his decision. There was one small private school that just kept sending stuff. In July they sent him a temp. ID finally after I talked on the phone with someone there they finally quit sending him things.

My son applied to four schools last fall and was accepted at all of them. He decided on the University of North Texas and we have already turned in his housing deposit and a request for room mate. His best friend has been accepted also and they want to room together. Now to sign up for orientation.....
Go, Mean Green! DS graduates from there in May (I hope!) It's been such a great experience there for him he's thinking of going to graduate school there (thinking=he's applied, auditions next week, hopes to get accepted).
So your son made a good choice. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
