Coffeemakers

I've heard that it is not drinkable.
We drink it and it's still hot, not super hot. I tighten the thermos and roll it up in 2 towels and the blue blanket that's usually at the foot of the bed. Steam comes off it but it's not like you have to let it cool off to prevent burning your mouth. We only do this the very last morning. Lately dh has felt that room service is a waste of time and might as well DIY so most mornings he runs up to the deck to bring us coffee. If Cabanas was open, he'd get a plate to use as a tray/carrier. If it's not open yet, he'd double the cups (sorry) to prevent it burning his hands on the way back.

For our last cruise, my niece bought us this handy little device:

It worked perfectly!! It's very compact and easy to use. He loved it so much he even turned back to the room to get it the couple times he walked out without it.

The coffee is the worst part of my cruise every time. (Which is a pretty good DCL endorsement, I guess) I agree, bring instant, buy coffee at cove. Palo and Remi coffee was better too. This time we're going on the treasure and I'm glad there's more coffee options. I like my coffee really hot, so the room service is a no go for me too.

Just read this article about Carnival confiscating a French Press. The article is from March 3, 2025. Here’s the reason:

“ With a French press, it’s a little less obvious, and this is an item that isn’t mentioned on the banned list, nor is it clearly a part of any category of banned items.

The most likely explanation is that it creates an unnecessary broken glass hazard. One notable line on the banned list prohibits any type of non-alcoholic beverages that aren’t in cans or cartons (read: no glass).

Admittedly, as a former restaurant manager, I can imagine the nightmare it would create for the crew if someone shattered a French press while attempting to fill it with hot water at a Lido deck beverage station.”

Our solution to the coffee issue is to bring a travel Aeropress. No glass like our french press and we can make the coffee as strong as we like.

We just do Cove. Double espresso for me. Get the card and the 5th cup is free, I believe. Or if in concierge, the machine in there works for me. Main dinning rooms, Palo- all perfectly fine. Deck coffee-not so good, but plenty of options.

What do you do for hot water?
There's almost boiling hot water in the same machine where the coffee is, at the pool deck.. bring a large tumbler, fill it and bring it back to your room for the aeropress... I've thought of bringing one on the cruises we've done but it takes up some valuable real estate in our bags so I leave it at home..

The sixth cup is free!

Though, they sometimes give you a stamp on the next card when you get the freebie, so then it's the fifth cup free. :)

We use the travel version so it takes up very little space.

We do the starbucks instant via pods, too. Sometimes like at the MDR I even just pour one into their coffee and it instantly upgrades it. I also give out Via pods to the adults in our FE gifts :)
This is what we do! It really makes the ship coffee so much better. Via packets jumped in price before our last cruise so we switched to cafe bustelo and it was still a huge improvement.

I will throw myself out, but I love these threads. :crutches: As someone with a coffee problem with no intent of seeking help, I find it very amusing that anyone looking down on DCL coffee considers Starbucks better. It is not coffee if you have ever had good coffee. Depending on the day is it equal to or worse than McDonalds. At least there they have it prepacked so you know how bad it will be rather than actually brewing it to determine how bad it will be today :) Find a local coffee shop and roaster get to know them and you will never look back.

How do you think it would compare to a pour over filter in terms of clean up and space in luggage?
The travel version measure 4.2"x4.2"x7.3". For us, we don't have an issue fitting this in a bag. Clean up is easy as you push the used coffee grounds onto a plate or bowl. Much easier than cleaning up a french press.

I don’t think anyone was saying they prefer Starbucks, just that the Via sticks are better than nothing! I remember using them in the early days when I was home alone with an infant and didn’t know yet how to do anything without holding the baby. Kinda similar to being stuck on a cruise ship with bad coffee. What’s your advice to the coffee addicts on DCL?

I spent a small fortune on cove cofffee last cruise. These are some great ideas thank you!

This thread is cracking me up 😄 No judgment, I say do what brings you joy, I just cannot imagine putting so much effort into making my own morning coffee on vacation. (I don't want to do anything for myself on a cruise - I do all that crap at home every day)

I am of the perspective that I enjoy very good coffee, but I can also drink mediocre coffee and it will do the job. I drink all of the coffee on the ship. Pool deck coffee I mix with the hot cocoa - my little DIY mocha. I drink Cabanas/Marceline and MDR coffee as usual (it's fine), and get Cove coffee if I'm feeling like I want a treat.

Do you drink coffee black or with milk/cream? The problem with me and my spouse is we drink coffee black, so the quality of the coffee matters a lot, since we’re rawdogging it. Like another commenter said, it’s an addiction and I wish I didn’t have it! A curse, because it def becomes a “thing” we have to deal with on vacation in places that don’t have much of a brewed coffee scene. Some metaphorical “baggage” I wish I wasn’t lugging around.
