Coast to Coast and Back Again: A runDisney Journey

January 15, 2017 part 4 - Luminous Beings Are We, Not This Crude Matter

As I was leaving Disneyland, I decided to pull over to the side and attempt a selfie with Captain Phasma in the background because it was such a cool photo op and also I could use a little practice in my selfie game. It isn’t my best work, but not too shabby, I guess? Then it was time to exit Disneyland and head towards the city streets. I was still feeling a little giddy from the park time and also because it was still feeling really nice outside, running was fun! And trust me, living in Florida, running isn’t much for fun most of the time when you either have to start your long run at 5am or face the consequences of the heat, humidity, and the sun's cruel glare.

IMG_0951.jpg

In short, this was glorious! It was time now to head south on Harbor Boulevard, among the common folk (just kidding), but before exiting Disney property, there was a guy handing out Red Vines – nice! I didn’t take any, though, because I can barely walk/run and chew gum at the same time. So let’s not complicate things. :rolleyes1

One of my favorite aspects of running Disney races in California is the crowd support. Lots of folks come out with signs, costumes, cow bells, food, free hugs, the works. And it’s probably because it’s on city streets versus on private property in the middle of nowhere (though major props to the folks handing out fresh McDonald’s fries on the overpass at mile 16ish of the WDW marathon last year!) so it’s a bit more accessible to people than Osceola Parkway or World Drive, etc.

IMG_0954.jpg
This guy was awesome!

Then it was the long march on Harbor, past my hotel (though I’m happy to say that there was no temptation to head there). For some reason, it felt a lot shorter than in 2015. Maybe because now I’ve run more than a dozen half marathons in the interim, but this stretch seemed to crawl along forever two years ago.

IMG_0955.jpg

IMG_0956.jpg
Though it is a bit disheartening to be at 4 miles and see all the runners returning, nearly finished. Not to mention seeing your race costume but done better and faster! ;)

By this time, I’m still feeling pretty good, like a walk in the park, enjoying the race costumes around me (including a girl dressed in a really cool Chirrut Imwe – “I am one with the Force, the Force is with me.” – costume), just striding along and then boom! I was suddenly facedown and flat on the road. My shoe had apparently caught on one of those road reflector thingies and down I went. Luckily, I have decent reflexes and my arms went up and cushioned my fall. A bunch of runners stopped to check if I was OK, one said something about my nose (so I thought I’d scraped it all up) but in my momentary daze, I realized she asked about my head but was gesturing to her nose, hence my confusion. But my head seemed fine even though my visor went flying off ahead of me. A few folks helped me up, checked to see if I was OK, and kept going (and I didn’t blame them a bit, it was nice that they’d stopped at all).

Meanwhile I took a little inventory to see where the damage lay. Both palms had medium-depth road rash, my left elbow was shredded (literally, my arm sleeve was ripped at the elbow), my iPhone case front was shredded (thank goodness for Lifeproof cases – my phone is fine to this day) though the earbud wires were partially cut, and my midsection was sore (my breath had been knocked right out of me). But by and large, I was OK. Very fortunate. So I started walking, gingerly because I wasn’t quite sure if there wasn’t more going on (I’d hit the ground pretty hard, even with my arms mostly catching me) and trying to work out the sudden stiffness in my legs. I looked at my elbow and palms, which were starting to sting by now, and decided I should visit a medic tent, at the very least to get the road grit cleaned out of the wounds because in addition to that nastiness, I’d be sweating for another 9ish miles, so best to get it out before that happened. So this race marked a first for me: my first on-course medical tent visit! :crutches:

I opened up the digital race guide on my phone to see where the next one would be, and it was near mile 6. By this point, I’d texted DH to let him know I’d totally taken a header on course but apparently was still a little messed up in the noggin because I told him I was past mile 5 (which: nope). So I had about a mile and a half to go to the medical tent and by now I noticed that my bib was also only hanging by one hole; the top right hole had been ripped in the fall, so now I was awkwardly running/walking and holding one end of the bib up. All the more reason to visit the medical tent because they might have some tape to fix my bib.

IMG_0957.jpg
Honestly, I was still a bit shaken up, because as you can see, my finger is obscuring the bottom third of this photo! The nurse is the nice-looking lady in back with the black jacket/scarf on and after waiting about 5 minutes for her to finish up with another runner (plus an additional runner in a lounge chair who was apparently waiting to be picked up by the party bus), she looked me over to ensure I didn’t have a concussion and then tried to figure out how to patch me up. She decided that my palms would be OK after wiping them down with antiseptic (ouch), but that my elbow needed Neosporin and a bandage, and she didn’t have one bigger than a standard Band-Aid. So I told her that if she had a gauze pad, I could position it and then put my arm sleeve back on to keep it in place. She thought that was a good idea. And when she was done, I asked for a piece of medical tape to fix my bib. My medical tent visit was 15 minutes.

IMG_0958.jpg
It doesn't look that nasty, but trust me, it hurt like a @*%$&.

IMG_0959.jpg
My newly-taped bib corner! I was just so glad that I didn't have to hold it up anymore. :goodvibes

I profusely thanked nurse, got up from my chair, and then cautiously re-entered the course. And I was back on my way. Around mile 6.5, we turned west onto Garden Grove Blvd for about a mile, then turned north on to 9th Street (in 2015, I’d misread the street sign as “Sith Street” :darth:) for a couple blocks, then turning west on to Stanford Avenue, where we encountered cosplayers!! Woot woot! :chewy:

If you aren’t familiar with the 501st Legion, it is an organization dedicated to costuming in the Star Wars Universe, specifically for the Empire/Dark Side. There is also a sister Rebel Legion for the Light Side, but basically both organizations are referred to as “the 501st” collectively. Members apply to represent certain characters and have to meet strict standards for the costumes which can be rejected by review boards. It’s actually pretty serious and involves a lot of artistic talent. In addition to the costuming aspect, they do a ton of charity work, like visiting terminally ill children, volunteering at hospitals, and much, much more. There are chapters (= garrisons) all over the world. Their motto is “bad guys doing good” and I, for one, think that they’re a phenomenal organization. They also were the absolute stars (no pun intended) of the 2015 inaugural Light Side Half, as well as the 2016 inaugural Dark Side Half.

This year, as in 2015 (my only other Light Side experience), there were many lined up at and nearby Garden Grove High School along Stanford Avenue.

Up Next: Away Put Your Weapon, I Mean You No Harm

January 15, 2017 part 5 - Away Put Your Weapon, I Mean You No Harm (Half Marathon Part 5)

And the fun didn't stop for more than a city block! More cosplayers, all willing to pose with us, many with signs, and can you imagine how long they must have been out there? So awesome. :worship:

IMG_0964.jpg

IMG_0965.jpg

IMG_0967.jpg
I can always tell when the runner's brain and/or excitement kicks in: my finger somehow creeps into view. :rolleyes1

IMG_0968.jpg

All too soon, we turned the corner onto Euclid Street and the cosplayers were no more. It seemed like there was a significantly larger crowd back in 2015, but that could be attributed to the excitement associated with an inaugural event. Then it was some more Garden Grove roads and a loopty-loo that included Main Street, which was a pedestrian-only section for about a block with cute little shops on either side. I was feeling a bit down by this point, though, because I’d remembered there being more cosplayers in 2015.

IMG_0969.jpg

And as we came upon the Festival Amphitheater, there was even more 501st action! And now I remembered this portion from 2015 as well – I’d mentally lumped the two areas together and created one big area in my memory, probably due to my unfamiliarity with the locations but also because it was my second half marathon ever and I was inexperienced all-around – and my levels of excitement rebounded again!

IMG_0970.jpg

IMG_0972.jpg
The smoothest spectator in the galaxy! (Oh, and Count Dooku, whom I sometimes refer to as Prince Poopypants - apparently the vibe George Lucas was going for :rolleyes2)

IMG_0973.jpg
Various Jedi

IMG_0978.jpg
X-wing squadron!

IMG_0980.jpg
Many stormtroopers and some Sand People. Oh, and also an Ariel/Slave Leia mashup. AND the Cloud City Leia (a costume I aspire to someday).

Next Up: All Your Life You Have Looked Away to the Future, the Horizon

This guy totally nailed the evil Anakin look. It was emanating from him. Palpable. But not Palpatine! ;)

The highest of 5s from stormtroopers.

Clone Troopers! They are so fun!

Back in 2015, I’d looked for biker scouts since I was Endor Trooper Leia and thought that that would be an awesome photo op. And it was! Plus, the 501st guys were so nice. I thanked them profusely for coming out and supporting us and they basically responded in an aw-shucks tone that they weren’t the ones running 13 miles. So nice! And this year, I kept looking for biker scouts…and looking…and looking…got distracted by a girl dressed as Kaylee Frye from Firefly (wrong franchise, but awesome cosplay, you see her swirly rainbow umbrella above)…BIKER SCOUTS OMG. So I stopped for a photo op. These guys were totally in character, too, because the one on my left (at right in photo) was grabbing on to my arm like he'd taken me prisoner, which is why my arm is bend kind of backwards. Really cool and one of my favorite photo ops of the race!

Mandalorians!!

IMG_0998.jpg
Even more Mandalorians!

IMG_1001.jpg
Steampunk Star Wars!

IMG_1003.jpg
Look at Kylo Ren being all emo-evil in the background. you can also see the mile 9 marker. All the mile markers for the half marathon were the same. Except, you know, for the mile number.

Next Up: When 13.1 Miles You Reach, Look as Good You Will Not

January 15, 2017 part 7 - When 13.1 Miles You Reach, Look as Good You Will Not (Half Marathon Complete)

And now our time is nearly done. I know I posted a ton of cosplay photos here, but these are only the ones I chose to include, it’s not nearly representative of everyone who came out to support the runners. Amazing people and it’s just so awesome to have cheering, enthusiastic crowds because I’m accustomed to the relative quiet sporadically broken by a turkey vulture or some other wildlife on Osceola Pkwy/World Drive.

IMG_1004.jpg
The family that cosplays together stays together!

Somewhere in all of this was a Clif gel stop, but I didn’t make note of it because I don’t use those types of gels as fuel. In fact, for this race, I’d only end up downing two the entire time (one before starting and one around mile 7 or 8 because I figured it was time), which was another unusual thing for me; usually I go through at least 4 for a half marathon in Florida and I think it’s because of how much salt I lose when I am sweating in the Florida heat. I’ve been experimenting the last couple of months and now I think Nuun is a better option for me than my typical Gu/water combination. But I have yet to run a half marathon only using Nuun – I’ve done a couple long runs 8-10 miles here on hot days and the Nuun seems to work out pretty well, but I guess I’ll find out during Dark Side weekend!

But back to this race. The stretch back on Euclid and then Chapman Avenue was rather uneventful and kind of boring, but luckily only about 2 miles, and after the pick-me-up shortly before mile 9 (the cosplayers), it seemed to go pretty quickly. Relatively speaking. I was waiting to turn back on to Harbor Blvd, because that meant we were nearly finished! As I did, I noticed some bright green robes up ahead. One of the runDisney Instagrammers I follow is @runalltheraces – they are a group of ladies who, appropriately, run all the Disney races and in costume. In 2015 at Light Side, I’d run into them (literally) when I made a pit stop in DCA around mile 3 or 4 (race course was different then) and they’d been dressed as Tink Troopers. Since Light Side weekend had historically been the weekend for the Tinker Bell Half, it was their way to sort of have a Tink/Star Wars mashup. At the time I had no idea who they were, and I’m sure my mouth was agape when I passed by them (they were coming out, I was going in), but I soon learned all about them and have encountered them in almost every Disney race I’ve run ever since.

IMG_1006.jpg
Kylie, Kimberly, and Gail of @runalltheraces

I soon caught up to them, chatted for a minute or two and then as I was passing them asked them if they wouldn’t mind a quick on-course selfie, which they graciously obliged.

IMG_1007.jpg
Too funny! And I was so intent on getting them in frame that I did not focus on my own expression. o_O

Soon enough, I made the turn on to Katella – nearly on the home stretch! I’d been leap-frogging a guy dressed as Barf from Spaceballs and every time he went past me, I giggled. Every. Time. He's his own best friend!! :dog2:

IMG_1012.jpg

On Katella, I think I made my final trip past him, and then we turned on to Disneyland Drive, where I expected to see DH at any point. He’d brought along a poster board and markers so I knew he was going to make a sign for me (first time ever, but I think he’d been inspired by the ones I’d made for marathon weekend that never got to be used), but I wasn’t sure exactly where he’d be. Eventually I spotted him, and his sign wasn’t great (he said he hates his handwriting), but it was still the best sign because he’d made it for me. :) I wasn’t able to get a photo of it/him, though.

Soon enough, it was on to the home stretch, bands playing in the parking lot, crowds near Downtown Disney and then the finish line! I got my half marathon medal (so poignant now! Photo in a bit), then got in line for my challenge medal, where they checked my bib number versus the photo that had been taken at the expo, the lady looked at her screen and said, “you’re good to go, congratulations!” I picked up my Rebel Challenge medal, then was given my Coast to Coast one as well.

Sidebar: I know that this choice is probably controversial because I didn’t run the WDW Half Marathon since it was cancelled. However, after running Coast to Coast to Coast (and then that same coast again – 4 race weekends total) last year, I was all too familiar with runDisney’s accounting system for C2C and knew that it wouldn’t be given to me at Dark Side because I was already categorized as being eligible/complete for C2C at Light Side. So I picked it up. I didn’t do anything with it, barely looked at it, it’s in a drawer in my house currently, and I won’t do anything with it until after Dark Side. I just didn’t want to run the risk of getting to Dark Side and not getting the C2C medal as well, mostly because it’s the 10th anniversary and they changed it up from the standard one. So yes, I have the Coast to Coast medal and didn’t technically run coast to coast. Yet.

Then it was on to the post-race accoutrements. I picked up food box, banana, Powerade and water. Unfortunately no heat sheets, which I actually needed since I tend to chill after half marathons. Then finisher photo (hopefully PP can find my photos!) and on to the post-race party area. I decided I wanted a garbage compactor shot and waited in line about 20 minutes.

IMG_1015.jpg

Then I looked at my time. I always do text alerts for runDisney races because it’s just a nice way of keeping track where you are and then there’s no math involved, because while I’m normally very good at math, running does something to my brain where my math tends to get a little more…creative, shall we say. Don’t run and math, kids! But anyway, I looked at my time and despite stopping at most of the character stops, falling down, stopping at a med tent, stopping for 501st characters, and walking most of the last 8 miles, I was still well within the 16 mm pace! WUT. EVEN. And then I realized if I’d just RUN that race, I probably would have PRed my half marathon time. D’oh!

But I’ll tell you a secret: I PRed in fun!

IMG_1018.jpg
Rebel Challenge medal and half marathon medal (you'll see why it's poignant in a future post). I actually didn't much care for the challenge medal, I don't think it's among runDisney's best efforts. But I love the 10K and half marathon medals.

I finally wrapped up my post-race activities and headed to Downtown Disney to find DH. We grabbed breakfast sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich (breakfast BLT FTW!!) and started walking back to our hotel. As we crossed Katella, I caught sight of something odd in the back of a truck:

IMG_1021.jpg
Do you see it?

Are those Mary Poppins carousel horses?! As we got closer to the truck (an official Disneyland truck), sure enough, they were. How awesome is that, to just be walking around city streets and see props from a major piece of film (let alone Disney) history. So freaking cool.

IMG_1023.jpg

Then it was back to the hotel for breakfast, shower, and return to the parks.

Next Up: Go Back to Jakku?!

Ouch! So glad your were ok for the most part after your fall. All the '501st'' pics are great, I always laugh when there's a Count Dooku. Your Leia Endor is awesome too & the the one with biker Scouts is perfect! Great job!

she has a podcast with a friend (Not Real Runners) about Back of the Packers and races and costumes

I immediately went and looked up these podcasts. Thanks for the tip! I'm always looking for entertaining podcasts for my run; most of the ones I've found are too serious so I'm excited about these.

I was suddenly facedown and flat on the road. My shoe had apparently caught on one of those road reflector thingies and down I went.

My worst fear. Thankfully you weren't seriously injured and could continue on. It would have been hard for me to get back into the groove after that.

I know I posted a ton of cosplay photos here, but these are only the ones I chose to include, it’s not nearly representative of everyone who came out to support the runners.

I love cosplay! Currently working on Teen Titans Raven and Starfire costumes for DD and I for an upcoming superhero run. Can't get enough of costume pics!

Great recap! Thanks!

So cool. I am training now. I hope to do a a coast to coast next year. But I might just do one, next year, and then the coast to coast the year after.

Oh no!! I'm so glad that you were okay and able to finish the race (and still enjoy it!)...and glad that others stopped to check on you. That makes me have faith in humanity. ::yes::

Thank you! I mean, seriously, "Dooku"?! What was Lucas thinking? I laugh every time. Because I'm 12. Thanks for following along and the encouragement!

You're welcome! I'm not much of a podcast person (I barely have time to keep up with this, TV shows, and internet, but I've been listening to this podcast during travel), but I do enjoy this one.

I know! The funny thing is that when I ran Dopey last year, my running partner and I kept joking about those reflectors on the stretch between MK and DAK during the marathon. We kept drifting towards the middle of the road because we weren't fast, but we weren't walking, either, so being to the left felt like we were blocking other people and hanging out at the right meant we were constantly dodging and weaving. And I find myself drifting to the middle when I'm running solo, too. I'm my own cautionary tale now.

I love cosplay! Currently working on Teen Titans Raven and Starfire costumes for DD and I for an upcoming superhero run. Can't get enough of costume pics!

Awesome! I hope you post photos of you and DD in your race costumes! And thanks for following along.

Awesome! You have to start somewhere, and once you start Disney races it's hard to stop and you'll soon find yourself doing coast to coast and beyond... Good luck with your training!

Thank you! Yes, I was very lucky. I could have very easily given up because I was in some pain after that, but I figured to give it a go and see how far I got. Agreed on the faith in humanity - runners are very good for that!

P.S. I finally pulled the trigger on my first InB purchase this morning - couldn't miss out on those mermaid capris! I hope that the sizing works out... I know how happy you are with them on the whole, so I'm giving them a go as well. :)

January 15, 2017 part 8 – Go Back to Jakku?!

After returning to our hotel, I sort of dilly-dallied, lollygagged (do you know what that makes me? A lollygagger! – if you know the source of this joke, I may just love you), and just generally puttered around. After running, I don’t shower immediately because if I’m still experiencing remnant sweating, it seems counter-productive to shower while you’re still working up a sweat. I ate my breakfast BLT from Earl of Sandwich (they are really good, and seem less heavy/greasy than a breakfast sandwich with egg and cheese in it), started getting my clothes for the park together and then finally showered. We had lunch reservations at Wine Country Trattoria, where we’d had lunch after the Tinker Bell Half in May and we both really liked it, so it was something to look forward to.

So we made our way over to the parks a little past noon (I told you I frittered away some serious time!) and went to DCA to walk around a bit before our reservation. This was good because it kept my legs limber, and it helped me to determine whether my fall had any lingering damage. We decided to use this day to just sort of walk around and enjoy the scenery and the distinct lack of photos from this day are a testament to this philosophy! I really don’t have many.

But soon enough, it was time to go check in at Wine Country Trattoria, and unfortunately there was a huge crowd at the podium trying to get walkup seats. So we waited until they went away, voicing their extreme displeasure and I checked in for our ADR. As is typical, we were told it would be about 10 minutes or so until our table was ready, so we were debating whether to grab a quick glass of wine at the wine bar while we waited when the text message came through from the restaurant that our table was ready.

Our waiter was very attentive and we were seated inside this time (last time, we were outside in the sun – see my Tinker Bell TR for more photos of Wine Country Trattoria), and he was also very chatty with us, which is nice. We started with our drink orders and I decided on a wine flight and DH ordered a microbrew. I had no indecision on my food order, I was going to get the shrimp scampi because it was delicious the last time; DH decided to go with the lasagna for something different. Our food arrived pretty quickly and we dug in. Like last time, it was delicious and also nice to just sit and slowly enjoy a meal.

IMG_1026.jpg
I like wine.

IMG_1027.jpg
Personal-sized lasagna. DH said it was good. I tried a little, but definitely liked my scampi better.

IMG_1028.jpg
Shrimp scampi. Yum!

After we finished our meal and settled our bill, we decided to walk around and see if maybe there was availability at Cove Bar since we’d had zero luck with it this entire trip. So we walked around through Cars Land, then looped through Pacific Point, and doubled-back up the Paradise Pier bridge. The line for Cove Bar was insanely long. We were told there was a 90-minute wait. I’m sorry, but no. That’s insanity. So we bid adieu to Cove Bar, hoped we might hit it up the following day if we found time, and decided to go ride the Wheel of Death again. I have no idea why. But it was DH’s idea, and I couldn’t come up with a better one.

IMG_1030.jpg
What the what?

IMG_1034.jpg
That duck cracks me up.

IMG_1035.JPG
Hello, Cove Bar. Perhaps we'll meet again someday...

After riding that contraption again (we still haven’t mustered up the courage to try the swinging gondolas), DH said he’d like to go on California Screamin’ again. So we got in line for that and much fun was had, as evidenced by our PhotoPass shot.

IMG_1037.JPG
You get a nice view of people screaming as you are waiting in line!

IMG_1041.jpg
I have no idea what DH is doing. Waving his hands in the air like he just don't care?

Honestly, I don’t remember what we did after that because my photos stop, with a time stamp of almost 4pm. This is the hazard of trying to catch up on a trip report two months after the fact (with a lot of Life Stuff happening in between), but I suspect that we were really lame and went back to the hotel. Both of us were exhausted from getting up so early (DH woke up when I did for the half marathon), and we decided to get a good night’s sleep and hit the parks hard the following day.

IMG_1042.jpg
Step count for January 15. Apparently we walked a lot.

Next Up: A Very Full Day

Wheel of Death is right. Our first trip like 10 yrs ago I guess now, we did the swinging and my then like 2 & 3 yr old niece & nephew were screaming, my sister and I were screaming, it was awful, the video we have is hilarious though but nevermore! So then in '15 we stuck with a non-swining, so much calmer, still scary but I didn't feel like I was going to die.

You all are definitely braver than me for trying the swinging gondolas! Ha ha and you took video - awesome. I don't mind the non-swinging option, but I can't believe that we did it twice in one trip!

PhotoPass!!

Well, the PhotoPass Saga has come to a (mostly) happy end; I received an email earlier this week that they'd recovered my photos and granted me a one-time extension to April 18. I thought that was very accommodating of them and I sent a thank-you email. I've since looked at the photos, and while it seems that some photos aren't there anymore (plus about 20 or so of some guy I don't know), at least the finisher photos are and some action shots in the parks. Lesson learned: drop whatever I'm doing and download those photos immediately and/or purchase PhotoPass ahead of time when participating in a race weekend at Disneyland.

You'd think they'd position the backdrops so that you're not squinting into the sun, though...

004.jpg
A few of my parks photos showed up, too.

The 20+ photos of the random guy is the dude in front of me here. So if it's you, or you know him, I have some of his photos if he wants them.

Haha, my medical taped-up bib still cracks me up a bit.

January 16, 2017 part 1 - A Very Full Day

Once again, we woke up fairly early on Monday, our last day (though it was "sleeping in" for east coast time) and set about our day. DH and I talked about what we'd like to do on our last day since we don't know when we'll next go to DL, and I mentioned World of Color. This was our third trip to DL in 2 years and we still hadn't seen it. So I looked into dessert party options. We'd done the Star Wars dessert party at WDW last year during marathon weekend and had a blast, so I figured DL might have the same thing. And they did! We discussed it and decided to do it because if we paid for something ahead of time, it's a lot harder to make excuses to come back to the hotel. The only kicker was that our departing flight from SNA was very early in the morning and our Super Shuttle pickup time was around 4am. The deciding factor was that we would come back to the hotel mid- to late afternoon, take a nap or otherwise rest up, and then head back to the parks for the night.

IMG_1043.jpg
Yay! (note the time stamp on my phone)

I had been jonesing for a beignet the entire trip, so we soon headed off to Downtown Disney for Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen! We had enough time to enjoy breakfast and coffee and still make it to the parks before open.

IMG_1044.jpg
Beignets in progress.

IMG_1046.jpg
I ordered the beignet "French toast" sticks, which had enough sugar to fuel an elementary school. But soooo good!

We leisurely walked towards the parks and decided to hit up DL first since we'd neglected it the most this trip. Also, we've found that DL is not very busy in the mornings, so it was a good time to get to the rides we enjoy but don't have the FP option or are worth a 50+ minute wait. It's really fairly easy to experience a lot of attractions in the first couple hours of opening.

But first, some photo ops!

Obligatory castle-medals shot.

And here's why the half marathon medal was especially poignant this year - Leia. (Also Han, but mostly Leia).

We also meandered around these lovely gardens situated between the castle and Tomorrowland. So pretty!

But now it was time to get serious, so we first hit up the Matterhorn Bobsleds. During our first trip to DL two years ago, it had been closed for refurbishment, which was a huge disappointment for me since I'd been wanting to ride the bobsleds since I saw it depicted in a Little Golden Book where Donald took his three nephews to Disneyland; I just thought it was so cool that a roller coaster splashed through water! We'd ridden it last May during Tinker Bell weekend and really had some fun with it, and we wanted to hit it up one last time.

Love it.

I especially love the Swiss theming and music that plays here.

I'm so glad you were able to get some of the pictures. Looking forward to hearing about the dessert party.

Congrats on the race and your fabulous medals! (Sorry about the fall -- I can relate, as I had a total faceplate while running last year. At first I was just focused on the shock, did I actually just fall? Then the humiliation kicks in....did anyone see me? (yes!) Then the pain...landed on my palms and they were so scraped up, ouch! Then just had to get up and keep on running.....) I love your comment "I PRed in fun!" --- great attitude!!!! And great TR, am enjoying reading it as I've never been to DL.

Thanks, me too! I hope to finish my trip report this week. You know, since Dark Side Half weekend is in 2 weeks.

Yay PhotoPass! Love that one of you two in front of the Partners Statue. :)

Yay, PhotoPass indeed! They were really nice about it, too, though stern at the same time regarding expiration on the extension. And thank you!

Thank you! The fall is pretty much par for the course for me I usually say that I should be a product tester because if I can't injure myself, no one can. :rotfl:
But it was my first race-related injury. Yes, shock, humiliation, pain - all too familiar. Can't take credit for "PRed in fun" but it is usually my race goal. :) Thanks for reading along, I hope to have more for you all to read soon.

GROUP HUG!

Thanks to all for hanging in there through my sporadic posting (someday I will get my life together) and for providing feedback and comments along the way.
As a special treat (my definition of “treat” might be different from yours!), here’s a preview of the costumes I worked on this past weekend. DH is going to do the Dark Side 5K with me and so we are going to go as Poe Dameron and BB-8. Due to his recent hospitalization, though, we are going to walk the whole thing, but I think we’ve been seeded correctly for that, based upon our bib numbers. :thumbsup2

Oh, and look what arrived in the mail last week - I don't even know what to do with it?! :confused3

January 16, 2017 part 2 - Yodel-lay-hee-hoo!

We got in line for the Matterhorn Bobsleds around the back of the attraction since the wait wasn’t very long (sign said 35 minutes, which usually means 15-20) and slowly made our way to the front of the attraction. One of my favorite things is seeing all the Swiss canton shields there, including the one from my Swiss hometown, and also the alphorn player since my dad is one! For real. I grew up with him playing an 8-foot horn in our living room. I also dig the accordion music because it sounds like home. <3

The ride this time was kind of rough; I was actually pretty glad we’d saved it until after I’d run the races because there was a lot of jerking around that neither of us remembered from the last time. We were actually kind of glad that it was over and there would be no repeats this trip! But afterwards I had to get a photo of DH out front since he was wearing a Swiss flag shirt (his ancestral home is in Switzerland):

Then it was time to focus on Fantasyland for a bit! I made a quick stop to visit an old friend

IMG_1104.jpg
Alice: Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?
The Cheshire Cat: That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.
Alice: I don't much care where.
The Cheshire Cat: Then it doesn't much matter which way you go.
Alice: ...So long as I get somewhere.
The Cheshire Cat: Oh, you're sure to do that, if only you walk long enough.

I absolutely love the random, impromptu character appearances at Disneyland!

Onward to an attraction we haven’t ridden at DL – the teacups! This is a ride we avoid like the plague at MK and I think it’s inherent to the attraction design. At MK (in case you haven’t been to the Florida parks), the teacups are enclosed in a pavilion-like structure, almost like a carousel shell, and you spin and go around and around within it. At DL, I think being out in the open air helps to mitigate some of the claustrophobia I sometimes feel at MK’s version. However, this would be the first time to test that particular hypothesis (as a scientist, I rarely use the word “theory” because it means something very different to a scientist than laypeople), and we were ready!

I was trying to take a photo of DH across the teacup, sort of as a “we were here” memento, but he wouldn’t cooperate!

After the teacups, we did one of my very favorite dark rides, Alice in Wonderland. Alice is probably my favorite character and I love the books so much, to the extent that I have much of the poetry memorized (which annoys me when Johnny Depp recites it incorrectly!), and it’s just one of those things that takes me back to being a kid. Later in the day, the line can get pretty long, but if you hit it up in the morning, the wait is manageable. I just love it so. And then it was on to the Happiest Cruise that Ever Sailed: It’s A Small World.

During the holidays, there is a holiday-themed overlay and unlike Haunted Mansion and Jungle Cruise, this attraction was open during race weekend and we wanted to get to it before we left. Love!
