Very sad. I can't imagine that even if they survived the capsizing & went into the water with vests that they had access to fresh water.

There was talk about a missing cooler. Possibly, they would've had access to fresh water.....

I pray the families can find closure and peace.

there is a huge undertaking of privately funded searching going on by air/land and sea.

I don't want to be pessimistic, but if the Coast Guard has decided further searching is futile, how much longer can the private one realistically continue?

The boat was found 77 miles offshore. They were too smart to not take off for the Bahamas but not smart enough to heed all the marine warnings, as well as head into the open ocean right as a severe storm moved in?

Your friend was likely confused. Stupid Yahoo! News decided this would be a great time to re-run a story from 10 years ago about two teens found after being adrift off South Carolina. Many people saw this old story and shared it on Facebook thinking it was the currently missing boys.

I know I don't live near the water so maybe don't know what's typical. But I'm on my 3rd trip through raising a 14 year old, and I know that even the best of them are impulsive at times. I can't even imagine allowing them out in a boat alone, even with the limitations on how far they were supposed to go.

What a terrible tragedy.

I grew up on the water, by 14 I had my first boat of my own. It was unusual if a kid in the beach town we lived in the summer didn't have one. We had rules but we broke them all the time. We were typical stupid immortal teens

I don't want my dd riding her bike on major roads but that doesn't mean she might not decide to one day.

I have nothing but extreme sympathy for these families. I can't even wrap my head around how they will cope with this.

As you will see, I noted that I didn't grow up around the water, so maybe I would feel differently if I had. I'll readily admit I'm an overprotective parent when it comes to water activities.

It's insulting for you to imply that I feel they should pay for their lives. That's an absurd jump.

This sad saga is over. The families decided last Saturday to end their private search, announcing yesterday that decision was due to the lack of any new evidence or clues.
