Is this a new policy? We were in AK this month and one CM refused to trade pins with my kid because he already had the one he wanted to trade. The CM said that official Disney policy is that they cannot have 2 of the same pins on their lanyard. There was a CM standing behind him that backed this up by saying "Disney is cracking down on us having duplicates."

In all my years of pin trading, this is a 1st for me. Just wondering if anybody else has ran across this.

And really? Cracking down? Seriously? I did not realize that having more than one of the same pin was a crime. :lmao: Is this a misdemeanor or felony?

I've heard this ever since our first trip in 2007 - it's not a new policy. Occasionally we've seen CM's with doubles and dd7 knows enough to respect the policy so she won't offer the trade if she notices they've already got the pin.

It's not a matter of respect if you are not aware of it.

I have read that rule in some sort of list of the rules of pin trading.

Pretty sure it was a Disney Source. I will try to dig it up.

Well, I got curious after posting and looked it up on the official Disney site.

But I was only asking if it was a new rule because I have been pin trading since 2004 and have never heard this from a CM. My kids have given duplicates less than 10 times, but still, this is a 1st.

I guess it was the female CMs wording that threw me. ;)

My kids started pin trading in 2002, and CMs were usually willing to make a trade with a kid no matter what, but I do remember being told by a few when I went to trade, that they can only take a pin from me if they did not already have that pin.
At the time, I think they were less strict with trading with kids, but if you looked at their lanyards, you could see that people were (or were using their kids to) dumping freebie pins on the CMs. American Express gave a free pin to each member on a package, and I think the Walt Disney Travel Co did also. The AmEx pins were ugly too, and no one wanted them.
There were times when CMs lanyards were just loaded with them, which made it hard to have a good trade.

As my kids grew, they gave up trading, and now just buy pins as souvenirs of favorite rides, resorts, characters, etc

According to official publication here, one policy is "•When trading with a Cast Member, Guests should offer a pin that is not currently displayed on the Cast Member’s lanyard."

When I did my WDWCP in 2002, that was a policy at that point.

Was your child able to trade with a different CM?

I have never understood pin-trading. :confused3 I collect pins and wouldn't want to trade any of them. I collect pins for the rides I've been on, the Hotels I've stayed at and the characters I like. When we are on the Cruise ship I collect Cruise pins to remind me of the Cruise.

This has been the policy since the day pin trading started in 1999....
That information is 100% correct and when I have traded pins with the Cast Members I always make sure I don't trade them one they are already wearing on their lanyards. So the Cast Members are following the rules and that's the only time they can tell a guest no when trading with them.

This has always been a rule

In DLP they were selling old christmas pins for 3euro in January but only one design. All trip I was looking for a cast member without this pin to trade, but couldn't find anyone, they all already had it :sad2: I ended up bringing it home :rotfl:

It's just something fun to do. :confused3
