I love WDW and DL, but my other passion is "the South" and all of its beautiful architecture and antebellum homes. I've been to Savannah and now I'm on to Natchez, Mississippi in Spring 2010 for the Spring Pilgrimage. Who's been there, who's done that and what do I need to know? I'll take the good, the bad and the ugly. I was truly born in the wrong part of this country.

I drive through Natchez on my way to visit Poverty Point. Does that count?

Actually, if you want to see old plantations and relax, come to St. Francisville. Enough old plantations for a pilgrimage, decent food, and a quiet, hometown, welcoming place. There are several lovely B&B's, but my personal fave is the Butler Greenwood, which isn't quite a B&B - guests stay in private little cottages scattered about the property.

We vacationed there about 15 years ago. This is what I remember (or think I remember). We stayed at The Burn Bed and Breakfast. It was very nice. I don't remember having any complaints.

We ate at the **** of the Walk restaurant. Enjoyed it so much we went back a second time. I have tried to find this in other cities for other trips. There are a couple of other locations, but the reviews have always been average to poor so we haven't ended up making it back. However, we enjoyed it when we had it (quality can change though). We also ate at the Magnolia Grill. It was good if memory serves me had some unique menu items.

We toured Longwood Mansion. It was uniquely octagonal.

That is all I remember. If there were any battlefields near by, I'm sure we stopped there since my dad planned the trip.

I posted this late in the evening, and I'm bumping in the hopes of receiving some more advice.

I have never been to the pilgrammage, but I have been to Natchez many times. You will have a blast in Natchez! Be sure to go to Dunleith and Monmouth for sure! The Briars, on the bluff overlooking the river is another great place to visit, that is where Jefferson Davis got married...

Monmouth has a fabulous dinner (something like 5 or 7 courses, I can't remember exactly)! You have to eat at The Castle behind Dunleith at least once it is really great too! Be sure to eat at Biscuits and Blues - it is a bbq joint downtown.

If you are into antiques, just stroll downtown and you will be able to find just about anything your heart desires.

Ill be glad to answer any other questions you have!

It's been many years since we visited Natchez but I do remember having a good time. There are slews of houses to tour and the previously mentioned St Francisville is within driving distance and well worth a look too. Definitely see Longwood. I remember a house by the name of Rosalie too.

I do recall that downtown Natchez is large and seemed to have a lot to see. There is a gambling ship for those interested.

I think that you'll really enjoy Natchez. Just prepared to drive around and maybe drive in the countryside to really explore. Oh, Natchez is also where the Natchez Trace starts. This is an interesting road which is in the National Park system so you might want to look into that too. Don't expect to drive the whole thing though - it's 440 miles long!

I was actually thinking of trying to return sometime and marked this site http://www.visitnatchez.com/ Careful, it has sound!

We spent our 10th wedding anniversary in Natchez. We had a great time. Natchez is really very beautiful.
We stayed at The Briars. It is in a beautiful setting right on the bluffs. They also had some very good and creative breakfasts there. One morning we had turkey with a sauce served over grits. It was so good, I remember it 10 years later:lovestruc
Another highlight was visiting Melrose Plantation. It is probably the most beautiful home I've ever seen.
I hope you have a great time.

My son and daughter-in-law got married at Dunleith. It is beautiful. Both families stayed there the nights before and of the wedding and the guest rooms in the main house are really something to see. The food there is wonderful.

Be sure and go eat "Under the Hill" at the restaurant already recommended to you. I never thought about a restaurant name being bleeped out. Too funny.

Don't miss Fat Mama's Margaretta's.

Thanks everyone for all the ideas! I've been under the weather for a little while and hadn't gotten back to this thread. I appreciate all the advice and dining recommendations. We are really looking forward to going this spring!

Try this site if you want to do some reading about the area - http://www.countryroadsmagazine.com/

Natchez, I believe is on the outer reaches of it's coverage area, but it is definitely well-represented. I do know at least two full pages of advertisements in each issue are dedicated to Natchez-area merchants, and several of the B&Bs & restaurants are covered as well.

IIRC, there's usually an issue at the beginning of the year dedicated to the Spring Pilgrimages.
